I made this recording as a tribute to one of my all-time favorite musicians, @PatMethenyOfficial When this album came out (also titled "Orchestrion") in late 2013, I immediately noticed there was no drummer playing! There wasn't even an actual drumset on the recording, only percussion instruments that were being "played" by Pat using robotics and solenoid technology. Growing up as an aspiring drummer, practicing to music always meant playing OVER a drummer on a recording. Playing over someone else's ideas. It made it difficult to find my own voice. With this recording, although there are drums present, it has always felt like I am actually Pat's drummer because of the space left open by the lack of a drumset. And so I embarked on a mission to learn the 15 minute piece so that I could write and perform my very own drum part. Here we are 10 years after I embarked on this journey!!!
I took it a step further in the making of this video by using an app called "Moises" to effectively remove all the percussion on the recording, replacing it with my live drumming.
One of my goals all along was to record my performance as a "single take," which this is. This is also what made mastering the tune more challenging!!!
