Replace motor brushes on Singer model 401A sewing machine. Access motor, remove and clean brush holders, clean commutator and area, reassemble and test.
Going to attempt this in the am…looks to be a one man job.
easy job, you can do it
@@dougb432 yeah well I just tried to reef on the back bolt not getting that with a rachet
Probably wouldnt hurt to put a bead of silicone around the entire filter from the inside
Just replaced both on my 2017. I was able to do it all from inside the cab, just took some finessing. I tied a string to the top to help pull it in and to prevent dropping it outside. Thnx for the video.
I liked how you slid them between the bed and cab, instead of ramming them through the hole and potentially ruining the seal. Gotta do mine today. Thanks for the vid
thanks!
Do you have the replacement part number?

Thanks for showing! I just ordered 2 for my truck :)
That's great! Glad to help
They even sounded better when you snapped them in than the old ones
Thanks for watching Brad
Very informative video. Thanks so much for sharing your experience.
Thank you! Good luck
Doug for the win! Thank you. Maybe Mopar has changed the form factor of the plastic recently, but I have a feeling that other people saying you can install the new vent from inside the cab is BS. Coming up from the bottom with a little cordage is the way to go.
No way it can go in from the inside. Thanks for watching.
@@dougb432I’ve seen multiple people who have done it on a truck my age….maybe because yours is newer?
@@Justin12833 That could be the case.
Stupid design, my floor has been wet too🙄
They should fix it for free!
@@dougb432 yeah, i had a lake under my drivers side passenger seat. I thought it was 3rd tail light, fixed that and still had flooding. I see the cab vent seal is cracked and its only on the one side where its getting wet. Crazy. I orderd 2 new vents.
I want to you for this video, I stumbled on it as I thought my 3rd light was leaking. I had water in the drivers side back storage area in the back under the seat. As I was looking online for how to do it again, as I had replaced the 3rd light seal before, was looking for anything new on it, and found this video and others about the vents in the back, WHO would have thought. Anyway, I watched your video, and determined it was the vent and not the 3rd light. So I purchased 2 vents as I figured the other was bad too, do them both at the same time. Man, when I took them out, the seals were cracked and dry rotted, 3/4 of the vents were gone, man, I would have never looked to replace these 2 vents had I not found this info on youtube. I had to use fishing line, and lowered the vents down between the cab of the truck and the bed of the truck then had someone grab them from inside, and mount them, Easy peasy. Took about 15-20 mins to get the seat pulled, the 3 metal things with the straps, and the cover to get to the vents. Again, thanks for the video.
Thanks so much Thomas! I'm really happy to have helped out.
Thanks. Looks like I have some work to do. Mine are leaking (I think). This vid will help!
Glad to help. Pretty easy job, good luck.
@@dougb432 Just got mine done yesterday. Fed the cab from underneath just like you did. All went pretty well. The old ones were in horrible shape. No wonder they leaked. New ones fit and look much better. Thanks!!!!
Excellent!!!!!!
Thank you! Cheers!
Hey Doug, my 2018 Standard Cab was just a little bit different, I found it easier to slide them in from underneath the bed. But your video was a huge help. Thank you!
Yes that's the way I did it too. Thanks!
very interesting
Thank you for watching and commenting.
excellent thank you
Dear Mr. Andy, Your explanations about the singer 401G machine is clear. I am from srilanka. I am in possession of a Singer 401G machine. My problem is the brush holder s for the above machine are broken. For the time being I have soldered them with lead. But I am not sure whether that will last long. It is impossible to buy these brush holders here. Can you please help me in getting down four numbers of Brush holders (Brass) for the above 401 g. Please explain me in detail about the mode of payment etc. With regards.
I am sorry to say that I do not know a source for this item. I think you have mistaken me for Andytube. Please contact him and I'm sure he will be able to help you.
Great video! Did you ever end up finding a good source for the right size of brushes? I'm having trouble finding a place to get them.
Hello Spencer! Thanks for watching. I have not tried to find brushes but an internet search turned up several sources on eBay. Sew.tec from the UK looks good. Good luck and let me know if you find some.
This is a great video with excellent close-up detail on how to remove, AND replace the motor brushes. I've never changed the motor brushes on these machines before, so this was exactly what I needed!
Thank you very much! These machines will last for generations when properly cared for. I'm happy you found the video useful.
Thank you very much. That was exactly what I was looking for. :)
I'm glad you found the video helpful! Thanks for the comment.
Thank you for the great video! I just got a 500A and want to check the brushes as I perform the cleaning and maintenance. This is very helpful.
Glad to help. Good luck with your new machine!
It’s gorgeous!
Thanks!
It's gorgeous. Thanks for saving it, Doug. I like that you did the walk around and showed the backside of the machine. Lots of people do not do that. Happy you made another video! Take care.
Thanks Andy!
Thank you for posting a second video. I actually gasped when you took the cover off of the machine. Wow, simply beautiful! It looks as though the decals are completely intact. Have you had to rewire your 15-91?
Thanks for the comment. No, I did not have to do anything to this machine except the tuneup that the repairman did. I plan on doing some more videos about this great machine. Today I sewed through 8 layers of denim and it didn't miss a beat. Stay tuned.
Would you say it runs like a singer
Yes I would!
New content! Woohoo!
Thanks!
I own several VSMs (Singer) and so will be looking forward to MANY(?) more of your videos! Welcome to my subscribed viewing list!!! (Apparently, I'm number 15? YAY!!! Have a beautiful day!!! Oh, and you can thank Andy for sending me your way! Many Blessings!!
Thank you! Will do!
Great vid Doug. I own 2 vintage Singers and I've learned so much about the machines through UA-cam videos. Looking forward to your next vid!
More to come! Thanks!
Great explanation!!! Thanks!!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Suggestion for cleaning the commutater. Try a cotton swab moistened with rubbing alcohol. Make sure that the swab is just moistened, not saturated.
Good information. Thanks.
Great video. Good production and informational. Are there symptoms to indicate when brushes need to be replaced or cleaned? Exactly what are the brushes function?
Great question Dave. The first symptom would be a loss of power. If the brushes wear down completely the motor would suffer serious damage and stop working. Brushes conduct electrical current via the commutator to the rotating wire coils that produce the magnetic field that causes the motor to turn.
great job doug for your first video;];];] clear and easy to follow /understand.;];];] i think andy has room for another teacher;];];] keep them coming ;];];];]
Thank you for the encouraging comments!
Great job Doug - and congrats on the inaugural video - nice to see 401's kept in the family. Your mother would be proud. Proof positive these machines will last a few lifetimes (or more) if kept up properly. As a fellow 401 owner, always interested in videos on these machines. One of my favorites!
Thank you very much!
Congratulations, Doug on an excellent first UA-cam video! I am your second subscriber and I have a pretty good idea who the first one is. 😀 Your close up camera work and instructions are so good that I am completely confident in performing the same procedure on the motor I have already pulled out of my 500A. I am refurbishing the machine using Andy Tube’s superlative tutorials. Acolytes of Andy Tube are legion, I suspect. I appreciated hearing the history of your 401. Your mom sewed racing silks-that’s fascinating. Anyway, thanks for what I hope is the first of many videos to come.
Thanks for the comments. Andy's videos are my inspiration to attempt this one. Glad to know it is helpful.
Nicely done, Doug. Clear and to the point. Thanks for showing us how we can do it ourselves and clean or replace the carbons. I have never used an eraser on the commutator, but I just recently read in a Model 221 Service Manual that a rubber eraser is the only thing they recommend for cleaning the commutator. Congrats on your first video and hope to see more.
Thanks Andy, your videos are the best. I'm already trying to think up the next one.
@@dougb432 We'll be waiting for the next one, on with the show!
