Jeremyarbitaljacoby, I can hear what Stefon is describing; essentially the partial/half-pedaling is something a lot of vibists (myself included) do to get a better tone quality. You can hear it in this video (and the two others posted recently). The bars ring just a bit longer than normal, putting the sustain more in the quality of the marimba. This allows the tone the time it needs to swell, so the fundamental overcomes the nonharmonic partials. It also creates a more legato connection, one note to the other, than the vibraphone normally has without pedal. It's very clear in this and the other videos and only requires a bit of attention. It is in fact something audience/listeners WOULD notice, but maybe subconsciously--they wouldn't know how to describe why they are enjoying what they hear. Another impact is that the player himself or herself responds differently to the instrument, which can also transmit a different (and sought-after) emotional impact to the listener. So these nuances, I believe, absolutely matter.

Hello, I know it is there-somewhere? I can hear it- but my main point is -unless you are “top” of the instrument you will not get/hear/experience “whatever” ” benefits from it? Certainly, innovative design is a very welcomed goal! ( thank you Lee!), but in most live ( acoustic ) performances, an audience member is not walking away from that concert saying: “did you hear the ‘feathered’ dampening by the vibraphonist? It made the whole performance come alive!” It would be nice, but, I’d be glad if the vibes were heard at at all! It is a “nuanced subtle” sound. In a recording studio, I do believe this “feathering” could be much better heard and demonstrated. Also, any kind of “quantification” could be (I believe) helpful in reducing the “subjectivity” of it. What lengths of durations more or less? What dbs etc. As I stated, “I am not trying to be negative!” On the contrary, I would like this feature to get as much positive accolades as possible! But, in my humble opinion, the recording ( and demonstration of it) did not serve it as well as it could have. If you feel it did, then great!

Hi Stefon. Heard your great show at the St. Paul Jazz Fest about a month ago. Marvelous band and performance. Powerful and soulful. Were you using the OmegaAir on that show or a different Omega? Also, just to set the record straight--both vanderPlas and Ludwig/Leedy made vertical dampeners, and I believe Demorrow may have as well. Leedy's was unigue in that the bar collapsed horizontally, along the long axis of the bar, which was two "C" shaped steel profiles with embedded springs. Vanderplas used a double-articulated hinge, like two parallel elbows, to deal with the problem. This is not to discount the wonderful enhancements Malletech is making. I hope I can find an OmegaAir to try out near me soon, as, between the light weight design and other features, it is very appealing. I am glad to see Malletech putting so much effort into improving the instrument. I do especially appreciate the half-pedal improvement. Thanks for putting up these very helpful demo videos.

I would imagine it may “feel” a bit different, but listening with headphones, it sounds like any good instrument. Like all instruments the “spring” pressure ( which you/we can and do adjust,) I can achieve this “half pedaling” resonance. Please I am not trying to be “negative” but, the delicate subtleties you are describing ( at least from this video) I do not believe are being best exemplified. The beauty and subtlety of the instrument ( acoustically ) are heard when close to the instrument. As a player, your experience ( head being 2-3 feet directly above the instrument-typically sounds so good! We (the player) know a “great sound.” But, get 6-8-10 feet away ( acoustically) the instrument looses the “beautiful” subtitles and nuance that the “audience will not hear.” I think what Lee has done for the vibraphone is fantastic! But, simply, maybe try to make recordings ( possibly closer miked and mixed ) better to help more clearly demonstrate these potentially excellent nuances.

Surprised there are no comments here. Anyway, I had a 2.6 Malletech glock. I sold it during COVID. I am sorry I did. Now I am going to buy another one. The Malletech has the same high quality tone of a Fall Creek. They ring for ever with that wonderful bright sound. I sound like a salesman, but I am not. Just an end user.
