This song takes me back to a great summer with somebody who made me fall in love. It was the summer of 1984, and the lady in question was home from university. I had been a DJ at a hotel for a few months, and had met a very nice lady who I became friendly with. Then one night, she took her daughter to the disco night. I looked to the side of the dancefloor where they were sat and liked the look of the young lady. At a suitable point, I went over to say hello, and get an introduction. The girl seemed as nice as she looked, and later we had a couple of dances... Understanding that she would only be home for a few months, I thought I would offer to take her out, and I was over the moon when she accepted. So date nights began, I suddenly realised that I had fallen for her in a big way. I started playing this song just before the disco nights ended, and would trot over to dance with her... Then, the summer ended and it was time for her to go back to uni... A few days after her return, her mum said there were things at home she needed taking down, so I took the opportunity to visit, we had a really nice evening chatting and listening to music. A couple of weeks later I picked up her mother and took her where her daughter was at university, and we went out for a lovely meal... We seemed to be so close. Although I tried phoning her, only having one pay phone for all the students in the dorm, I could never get through, so gave up... Then, in December 84, her mother said she was coming home, so I phoned her at home, she agreed to come out... When I went to pick her up, she came out, got in the minibus I was driving (not the most romantic vehicle for a date), then she hit me with a sledgehammer and said she didn't want to go out with me... Never understood why, it seemed like I had zoned out, and didn't hear anything else she said, a couldn't find the words to say. Maybe the lack of contact for that few weeks made her feel as if I didn't really care... The next time we met a year or so later, intending to show I was still a friend, we went for a dance. It felt like it did during that summer in 84 and without thinking, I kissed her on the cheek. She walked off the dancefloor and sat down. I mouthed an apology, and went to the other end of the room and we never spoke... After she finished university, she got a teaching job even further away from where she studied... I was going to be in the area, so I got her address from her mum, and went down to visit.... If you have read this story, how do you think it ended ? I spent a couple of hours with her that afternoon as friends. She thanked me for visiting, and we hugged as I left. That was the last time we met. Shortly after I started seeing someone else and moved away from home, and that was that. The end. When I was back home visiting, I saw her mum and her mums friend. She was happily married with 3 daughters, and I was then married with 2 daughters... Recently, she has been on my mind a lot, I don't know if that is sweet, or just totally creepy, but I would love to know how she is and hope she is happy and healthy... Despite the way we parted, and how we have clearly moved on, I still have a lot of affection for her and she will always be THE LADY IN MY LIFE X
