WEBINAR DESCRIPTION
Contemporary psychological/psychiatric practices typically view negative symptoms as fixed, individual, ‘deficits’ with biological underpinnings. This conceptualization is problematic in that it neglects the importance of social, political, and structural influences/determinants of “negative symptoms”.
Although a great deal of alternative and meaning-oriented work has addressed so-called “positive symptoms” such as voices, visions and extreme beliefs, scant attention has been paid to “negative symptoms”, such as alogia, social withdrawal, and anhedonia. We seek to fill this gap through exploring alternative, meaning-centered, and lived experience perspectives on “negative symptoms”. We argue that traditional frameworks pathologize so-called ‘negative symptoms’, and in turn create harmful narratives that leave people stuck. Instead, we argue that so-called “negative symptoms” have generative potential and urge a paradigmatic shift towards approaches that center the voices of people with lived experience and integrate socio-political context.
Included in this talk will be a review of our project Rethink Negative Symptoms, which collected direct first-person narratives of experiences that have been labelled "negative symptoms," lived experience perspectives on associated language, terminology and alternatives, and critiques/concerns of the construct.

    I notice doctors largely ignore what the bible says about psychosis. In particular that wisdom and glory are found through gods counsel, provided it is looked at introspectively. Galatians 5 lists bad impulses which deprive people of peace. By recognising what brings us peace vs what deprives us of peace it is possible to develop an aversion to these behaviours.

    jesus christ I appreciate alot of the work you do with regards to demedicalisation and depathologising of those labelled psychotic or with schizophrenia etc but god that was a hard listen to I have to admit.It felt like an awful lot of words and that kind of clinicalised language which can be so alienating. It really didn't look at the subjective expereinces of those with "psychosis"and why they might switch from "positive symptoms"more lurid states,"hallucinations,mood swings etc...to depressive states or problems with vocialising or basic "low functioning. It always seems like looking at a person from the outside and as object rather than as a subject and what is actually going on for them in those various states. Yes it was good that you stated actualy social reasons for "negative symptoms"..like social rejection or stigma or any number of things that might be going on for that person. I found it a hard listen and I am interested in this stuff !!! jeez so clinical

    There “treatment” several times a week for years? I think “observation” is more accurate. Perhaps we in psychoanalysis are good at observing psychosis but we still have little idea how to treat it.

    I am so grateful for all these alternative perpectives on how to respond to those ina mental health crisis but it is also very depressing that after more than 30 years since I and my family forst came into contact with the mental health system that so little has changed and those at the margins trying to change the default response of drugs drugs drugs and still so few other therapeutic options available and truely trying to understand the subjective reality of what someone might be going thorugh and not objectfiy them as the "sick one",the one that needs to be "fixed",the one that is "abnormal","delusional","out of touch with reality",when so often the onlookers are themselves looking through the prism of their own dysfunctions and limited perspectives of reality.

  • @upendasana7857

    One of the main problems with this is that access to therapy for those who are unable to afford therapy whether as a family or individual is what will restrict access,many admitted to hospital diagnosed with a psychotic illness are not even told about alternatives like Hearing voices and are just put on medications by default. It would be wonderful if one day we had hibs and community settings where people could go and access therapy like this and also peer supported and other form of therapeutic intervention like gardening or simply community connecting practices because one of the worst side effects of a person diagnosed will be isolation and being cut off from amny of the social and cultural aspects of life that most people will be able to access.

  • @upendasana7857
    @upendasana7857 Місяць тому

    Open Dialogue feels like something which could be applied in so many settings where conflicts or dysfunctional dynamics in families or organisations or any type of institution where communication breakdown or dysfunctional system. I don't know whether I have totally "got it"but in some ways it reminds me of things like constellation work where the energies and undercurrents of ancestral dynamics are still current and alive in the living present...not sure if I am right to draw such parallels but I do think alot of "mental illness"can be to do with unexpressed or unmetabolised trauma or just unresolved issues,desires,needs or aspirations. I think shame is often the most dominant emotion or energy which stops or inhibits "open dialogue"and any time the conditions for an open dialogue are created then healing can happen by bringing to light all the unseen or inheard pain. In some ways it sems so simple and obvious and yet our society and many families and systems in general fail to see this. I would love to experience it or see it in practice as I think its something to really experience.

    I have schizophrenia and anytime I’m in a deep psychosis, I never have any voices or thoughts/delusions about any religious figures or anything like that. I keep hearing about those type of images And voices are common but the voices I hear are all kinds of random women that are extremely cruel and say the most horrible things about me. I’m glad I don’t rant and rave about gods lol that’s probably because religion has never been apart of my life though.

  • @neallcalvert

    Regarding so-called 'delusions' of being a 'prophet' or 'spiritual leader' -- these could be spiritual awakenings: 'spiritual emergence" instead of 'spiritual emergency'. Perhaps, for example, give them help in reframing their beliefs from "I am Jesus' to "I am a carrier of the Christ Consciousness" -- which is the goal of real spiritual growth, and living in partnership with such a force answers many of the problems of life: partnership with a force 'greater than oneself' or Higher Power. That's completely 'normal' in spiritual communities. People rebalance at a higher level of existence then. Usually they are happier.

    Interesting, but what exactly is the theory? This video does not give paramenters into the basis of the theory. Who initiated the work, what prior work is it based upon, is it combined with medications? A commentor is correct, the patient sounds more phobic than psychotic or delusional. Phobias can be treated by using succesive approxamations and exposure to the negative stimulis, but true psychosis or delusions usually cannot.

    I think Jung was close, the missing link is spirituality, the soul and validity of the spiritual realm. I believe many are awakening today as part of this spiritual and energetic balancing based on the universal laws and the souls evolution. I’m spiritual and he’s the archetypes as part of divination, oracle readings, cards that resonate with the energy .

    Not everyone is patient enough to live in a new community for a year before taking peyote....most people don't have access psychiatric care via the standard health insurance plan, let alone knowledge of and access to legitimate elders. Then there's the issue of employment and family responsibilities...I think most people, especially those in crisis would love to be taken under wing and guided, but without much hope via conventional western means, it seems like a reasonable calculated risk to venture out ( or in) on one's own.
