    Hi captain steel, I wanted to ask your advice on something. I’m trying to build a 1:1 scale Metal Sonic head, but his visor/screen is very curved and has a very unique shape. I just watched your daft punk helmet video, and wanted to ask if you’d how to go about creating a led screen for Metal Sonic. The leds you used in the daft punk helmet make the animations look like pixel animations, but is there a way to have a very high resolution for metal sonic’s visor? Would love your thoughts on this :) If i manage to build it, i’ll credit you for your help if you want!

    • @CaptainSteel
      @CaptainSteel 17 днів тому

      Hey Starline36, great question! Back when I made the visor for the Guy helmet I ended up making a 'buck' out of foam and wood that took on the shape of the visor. I then took a wooden frame that I made and secured a flat sheet of PETG plastic into it. After heating it in the oven for a few minutes, the plastic became soft, but not melted. At that point I pulled the plastic over the buck on a vacuum table to ensure a tight seal to the buck. This is called vacuum forming plastic, it's a tricky process to get right, but worth it in the end However, now that I own a resin 3D printer, I just buy ultra clear resin and 3D design then print the visor. For example, I'm working on a Helldivers helmet right now and I just 3D printed the visor, sanded it, polished it, then applied a very fine layer of clear coat to make it see-through. If you don't have access to one, you can always try the first method I listed. The lesson I've learned here is to make visors as uncomplicated as possible as visibility deteriorates the crazy you try to get with it (not to mention tinting is a whole other monster to overcome). I.e. if you can get away with making your visor flat and rectangular, then absolutely do that (trust me) I know there's a few different makers out there that have done a really good job with visors - Punished Props probably has a good video on it (though I haven't watched it yet if it does exist). Hope that helps! And don't worry about crediting haha, just happy to help :)

  • @danaedk6988

    for me i have a lil problem. where I am I basically have to order eva foam, but instead of that I canuse like the yoga mats. but because am gonna make boxes (the aot gear) and am scared that its gonna be a bit softer than eav foam and also may tear up easily through the convention ?? so what should I do? i thought of putting some thin wood small bases. but still I don't really trust the yoga mats for painting carving and all or the texture.... should I just order eva foam??

    • @CaptainSteel
      @CaptainSteel Місяць тому

      @@danaedk6988 a high density Eva foam would be more ideal in this case as you are creating a rigid base. Wood could also work, but your cosplay may get pretty heavy and cumbersome to carry around all day. If you're close to a Walmart, you can take a look in their gym section to see if they have any cheap interlocking foam gym mats. I've used these for bigger more rigid projects in the past. Note that one side is usually textured, while the other is smooth and perfect for cosplay stuff! I highly recommend sealing this type of foam with a primer like plastidip
