I have noticed that you seem to prefer a “bottom feeder” for the bottom of a bowl. Other people I have seen on You Tube e.g. Richard Raffan use a rounded scraper. Is it personal preference which to use or are there other reasons to choose one rather than the other.

Thanks for mentioning speed and the dangers of an exploding bowl. A few months ago and ten stitches in my arm later… I learned the hard way!

Are palms more closely related to grasses and plantains than "real" trees? This might account for the differences in turning characteristics.

Hi Colwin. I have a challenge for you… something I’ve not yet seen is a vase encapsulated by wood but not only that, it should have open sections so you can see through it. In my mind this feels like it should be a)doable and b) really interesting. I’m thinking a slightly pear-shaped vase so the neck is thinner meaning the wooden part is permanently attached. What do you think?

Hi Colwin, another great video, but something is wrong with the sound all the way through. It’s constantly clipped and over modulated. Maybe you have a line-out from mike going into a mike-in instead of line-in? The distortion on both your and tom’s voice (his is worse) makes it a difficult listen which is a real shame. Anyway, love the new channel and thank you for being an inspiration to newbie turners like me

Very nice piece but I would love to see it with a more complex base. My idea would be to have the base be a larger, key dish-type thing where the bird is hitting the water in say the top left corner of a non-circular ‘pond’. I don’t know how would achieve that on a lathe but I’d really like to see you try it 🙏

Another wonderful project and teaching video, Colwin. The dust collector makes a loud and persistent noise that is annoying. I appreciate the need for dust control. Perhaps a different microphone would help with this noise. while still keeping your commentary so clear.. Thanks

That is cool. If you added a recess in the base, and glue a magnet in to have it on the top of the fridge or some place a magnet would stick.
