assuming you are not familiar with peking opera. me, either. but i do know this much. certain female roles are played by male actors. mei lanfang is one of the most famous in this style. the reason for male playing female is probably because females were not allowed to be an actress in the olden days. so they had men playing women instead. as a result some men really shine in their female settings. the tradition keeps going on to this day. don't know if this boy is a real queer in real life, but what he is doing here is his role calls for the show of femininity.
p.s. based on my casual observation the chinese in general tend to have a negative view towards lgbtqia+ crowd, but tolerate those people a whole lot more than in the past.
