We believe that all developers, big and small, need a solid understanding of the business and marketing aspects of our industry in order to succeed. Unfortunately, very few resources are available to educate these teams.
That's where we come in. Each week we discuss topics that will help developers be more successful. Sometimes it will be a presentation, other times we're talking to prominent companies in the industry to get them to share their knowledge. Either way, we're hopefully going to teach you something new!

Suly Gnomes alone made this video worth it!
I love connecting to my why
Thanks for all the great questions
58:00 Your "simulator style" is just a "soulless style"... damn it's not even a style. PLW is hiring inexperienced people just to pay them as few as possible and to milk the idiotic part of the market. Every project looks like this because they are an asset flips, made only from assets from the internet and without extra work. People don't call it an art style. It's quite the opposite, lack of the art style. Lack of the art direction.
24:06 Pure gold content
LMAO
How can we reach her company?
Thank you a lot for this detailed course
Awesome chat
So THAT is Powell group where the Sweetbaby psychos are hiding under.......
I am trying to use the QR code to view the agreement, but it seems your website is down :( Regardless thank you for the video!
Thanks for sharing!
It seems to me that cross-promotion (when the publisher could add links to other games on your page) was removed at the beginning of 2024? [19:10]
Phew, thankfully I've only made one of those mistakes (no initial trailer at steam page launch) which has now been rectified. Excellent talk!
Great knowledge!
This was randomly recommended to me, but I really loved the content! I really hope our game launch will be successful.
chris is so funny
I lost it at 54:06. Any chance we can have the jump talk ?
You should all listen to users more. It's a big problem in your industry. Now Im not telling you where to draw the lines, but more then you do now is an easy answer.
Do more of this! Amazing!
Timestamps for my DAE homies who are enjoying Industry fundamentals ;) 5:45 | Mistake 1: Thinking marketing starts midway 29:02 | Mistake 2: Not getting feedback during production 32:38 | Mistake 3: Not searching marketing opportunities a platform provides 36:24 | Mistake 4: Not allocating time to building relations and partnerships 41:50 | Mistake 5: Posting without a plan or a purpose
17:00 I think that has changed recently with steam not allowing links to other steam apps in descriptions or something like that im too lazy to check
Specifically because of shady asshats like him lol.
No one cares about how good your topic or points is if your Audio is shit. Bye bye
Reminder this appears to be recorded before the recent Demo page feature launch so now probably want to wait to release your official Demo on Steam till its really polished or even potentially when you expect to release the game within the next 3-6 months as it can basically give you a mini release bump in traffic. Remember you can do Beta's and Playtests and use Itch etc for your first Demo's to get the same feedback and bug reports as you did for Steam Demo's.
Great interview!
Working on our very first pitch deck for our very first fps title. So thankful for you all taking the time to mention these pointers. Taking notes like crazy!
Game marketing gold right here! Thanks
Chris is the steam marketing goat
Should I make a steam page for my game that's coming out in 3 years or it's too early?
56:45
Marketing starts from the moment we think about making a game, not after we finish it 👏
Picking the genre that's more likely to have success so yeah, it starts immediately
Well that was a treat, exactly what I needed, thanks for that, great questions, already joined the discord looks incredible useful and helpful, nothing on the table yet so i will be lurking. Great amount of information, got me up to date, I feel like if I make a good game I can make it now... was a bit lost, already read like 20 blogs and the book on mistakes, my algorithm is spewing pure gold on youtube now, so yeah great content if I could like more than once I would
I actually strongly disagree about the pricing, and the reason is markets outside of America and Western Europe. Steam recently had to adjust their currencies for inflation and developers had to compensate by raising prices in territories like Brazil and Turkey. Continually raising prices punishes players, makes piracy (or worse, grey market sales) a more viable option, and while I do agree that developers should value our work, we should not be overvaluing our games to the point that our competition undercuts us just by existing. Market research is key. Price your game within range of your competition, add or subtract value based on features your game does or doesn't offer in comparison, and if you feel the need to make up some difference, have DLC, cosmetic microtransactions, or merchandise at the ready for players willing to offer that extra bit of support.
No one is forcing anyone to buy, if they see the screenshots, trailer and decides the game worth 100USF and they play and like the game THEN the game wortg 100usd otherwise they will give a negative feedback there
See, you are using your heart and morals when thinking, too. Shady idiots who onyl want to get richer simply don't care that they are punishing their players. They think that their product is G O D L Y and people should be _thankful_ that they are _allowed_ to buy it. Don't be like them. You ahve things worked out way better than they do.
I have no idea of who you were or your credentials before I watched the video, but you caught me by surprise. Those are some solid tips! Thank you for taking the time to make this video 😊
I love Chris and his energy. Thank you very much for sharing your knowledge as always!
I love Chris Zuckoswki 😍. Been following him for a few years now 😅. Not in a scary way though 🤣.
What a treat. Thank you all!
Turned out to be a great talk - def would like to see a pt2 in Sept! To Alan's point about ppl "retreating" into familiar games, and investment doing the same, I think most companies are waiting to see who will show the new path - no one wants to be the trailblazer in a high-interest/uncertain environment. Console hasn't quite figured out where the double-digit growth will come from (IMO broader audiences & smaller games). Mobile is reeling from the one-two punch of changes to the entire ad-revenue & UA ecosystem, and key markets shrinking (China) or evolving (LATAM/EMEA/SEA). I think 2-3yrs out will indeed be a good time to hit the market with a slate/game that isn't SSDD. But that assumes that geopolitics & economics also normalize by then (hope so!).
Very interesting, thanks for sharing!
Great stuff. Thank you for sharing your insights.
I think that the people who were in the industry and especially in decision making positions lost their way due to greed. Look at games like C.O.L and the recently released #Blud, and the upcoming Black Myth Wukong and Mouse. These games are indie funded through crowdfinding. Yes the developers had to understand marketing and also development but it just goes to show that a publisher will sign on once they see the game had a market, and then developers have the upper hand during negotiations. And yes it is transactional and yes someone is going to get a better deal than the person across the table. That's business 101 and believing otherwise is totally disingenuous to say to aspiring developers. What I find interesting is why is there now a shit towards discouraging indie developers? If they make a good game fine, if they are trying to develop a game no one wants they will find out asap if they focus group test the game idea which can be done in a discord etc. This started to sound like a father knows best talk but where are the gems, the lessons, the guidelines for indie developers?? It sounded more like a podcast defending major publishers and their justification to maximize profits instead of investing in the talent that actually makes the games possible. And with the inclusion of AI and what these publishers assume it will allow them to do that's a dangerous gamble.
Man I need this spreadsheet lol
Lost me with the they them pronouns. Stay the fuck away from the industry sweet baby inc jr.
17:54 literally me watching this video while playing a game
Is there any way we can submit our pitch decks for review? How do you determine who you review?
Our submissions will be open again next month. To be considered for review you must belong to our Discord. The decks that are not chosen for the UA-cam reviews will be reviewed during our normal thursday sessions that take place in the discord. discord.gg/indiegamebusiness
My boy got obliterated for 2 hours lmao 😅 Great vid. Beyond helpful and kudos to the dev for staying honest and taking the great advice
Re-enable the Sweet Baby Inc. comment section you cowards
This is the most helpful video I've seen about this topic. Thank you! I hope you guys make more videos like this 💜
We will be having another session on June 11th, 4-5pm EDT. ua-cam.com/video/s4vyTttWgxk/v-deo.html&ab_channel=IndieGameBusiness%C2%AE
Is this still being worked on?
Steam: Reviews (Mixed): 16 Stellar sales on Steam at least... I don't know if this game did so insanely well on consoles or something isn't adding up
This is gold
Possibly one of the only people I've heard (so far) to admit about AI taking jobs in the industry.
