When you listen to Bernard Butler live in full flow like this he was different class. You almost can’t replicate that sound no matter what you do. He was doing that thing where he strummed with his right hand and played lead with his left so all the strings were ringing out simultaneously. It’s almost impossible to do and sound credible but he pulled it off.

I was there that night. I managed to blag my way backstage which to this day I don't know how I managed as there was only about six of us in the group & I didn't know them and they were all girls. Still, armed with a copy of "Animal Nitrate" I was oddly determined to get to meet them. When I walked into this dressing room I instantly thought to myself "I shouldn't be here & somebody's gonna kick me out soon" but I sat next to Simon Gilbert and just rambled on about music & Bowie which seemed to go down okay. After a bit I just made my excuse to leave, got them all to sign the record and left. Brett was the quietest but said "Thanks" as he signed the cover barely making eye contact. Can't remember any support.
