Bernhard Lang: Monadologie XXXVI Chopin 12 Etudes: Etude 4 [Vincenzo Furio]
"Monadologie XXXVI Chopin 12 Etudes: Etude 1 - 12 is part of the work series of the Monadologies, which now comprises more than 40 pieces and was created between 2007 and 2020.
It is characterized by the following features:
The method of Granular Analysis: through cellular fragmentation, an original score is deconstructed, i.e., first destroyed and then reassembled into a new text.
The use of different loops, which on the one hand musically theme and phenomenologically examine the process of repetition itself, and on the other hand represent rhythm and pattern generators.
The reference to a "first script", which is overwritten/rewritten by a second. The Monadologies refer both to their own material, but primarily to scores from music history (Chopin, R. Strauss, Mozart, Haydn, Schönberg, Webern, Puccini, etc.). In this case, it is Chopin Op.10, which is subjected to a virtual remix: the score is processed like an audio sample with the methods of virtual electroacoustics, i.e., granulated, filtered, looped, modulated, etc. In this sense, MXIX represents not a composition, but a meta-composition.
For a pianist, Op.10 is a work that one always deals with; however, the decisive impulse to overwrite the first volume of etudes came many years ago through the essays of Douglas R. Hofstaedter on the etudes, which he tried to read as paradigms of self-similar patterns, and through Györgi Ligeti, who personally pointed out Hofstaedter to me. His etudes were certainly a model for my adaptation.
All this was inspired by the experimental films of R.M. Ortiz and Martin Arnold, as well as the techniques of contemporary turntablists and live electronic artists."
