Exactly what I thought as I was playing it. That this game is the only large scale reproduction of ancient Egypt. I think that's lost on many people when they whine that AC isn't like the early games. No they're not, they're far better.

I enjoyed reading this book by Budge about his exploits. It's great that the British and others were able to teach them about legal rights and also tell a clueless society what their history was and how to read their hieroglyphs which they did not know how to read and had such bad lives before the British and French that they didn't care what it said.

Cuneiform is about as good at expressing vowels as it is at expressing consonants. So, not perfect, but still better than Egyptian or any Semitic abjad. Sure, it could have been some vowel other than /u/, but at least it must have been more like /u/ than like /e/.

There are many languages that don't have wh-movement. It's not super rare. It's the same in Mandarin, Vietnamese, Swahili, as well as in almost every SOV language I can think of.

30:40 - Of course English is a prestige language. Even the French, who are consciously trying to be nationalistic, have this deep, semiconscious conviction that America is the source of everything progressive, efficient and trendy that must be imitated. English may be 'mundane' to English speakers, but it is fancy to non-English speakers. And of course the Copts saw Greek as a prestige language and a 'better' language - most literature and intellectual discourse was in Greek, and it was the global language of the whole region much as English is the 'language of the world' today.

Just one quibble - I really don't notice any difference between your pronunciations of omega and omicron, and likewise between your eta and your epsilon. Are you trying to make them different in some way that I can't hear? (Open vs close, short vs long?)

great review, I actually started Origins to see the implementation of some parts of J-P Houdin's pyramid construction theory into the game..but soon got addicted to the game world and then Odyssey.. of course there are compromises in historical accuracy in favour of gameplay, like lifesize, details etc..in Odyssey all the islands are much too small, but eg the Heraion is done well.
