I was driving home home from work one morning. After a pretty brutal night shift. (I mention that for illustration, because most of our night shifts are brutal anyway). There was lots of heavy snow, as that road had not been cleared yet. (Due to the many other major highways that must be cleaned first, etc.) The drive was treacherous. The snow was up to or higher than the bottom of my car. So I was going along in the two narrow tire tracks left behind from the cars that had gone on before us. We're pretty much crawling and walking the cars. There came a moment when I just felt the car start floating and gliding. I had lost control of the car, and it was moving on its own. (I don't have time to tell you what was going through my mind, because I didn't have time to acknowledge or dwell on the myriad of things that were going through my mind in that moment). The car ran out of road and threw itself/hurled, floated? and ended up in this wide open space that when it was going over there I wondered if it was a body of water underneath the snow that would take us. Alas, the car had eventually come to a stop, and I had to come to MY senses and try to think fast. But 'think fast' about WHAT? Think fast how? All there was out there was overwhelming snow, my car that was just tossed like a toy...And the traffic of cars of people going to work...Looked so small and far away. (Them in their own hell and worry trying to navigate the snow, and hopefully get to work OK and not end up like that car they saw tossed in the middle of nowhere). The moment was bitter and surreal. Had I given up? I don't know. Didn't have time to think about that. (I felt alone and utterly screwed..for the predicament that I was in). I found myself out there trying to find anything...a twig (to put under my tires to cause traction)... (I had learnt Defensive Driving and so that had kicked in) When out in a distance...towards where the slow/stopped line of traffic was...I saw two moving dots. Two People bouncing and hopping towards me in the high snow. They came to me and said "Are you OK?" "Are you hurt?" I said 'I don't know. I think so.' One said "We're gonna get you out of here. Are you OK to drive?" I said a shaky 'yes'. Then for some reason, their next question struck me like a ton of bricks! He asked... "Which direction were you going in. (The car must have tumbled, floated or turned around so much so, that it wasn't clear as to where I was even trying to go). While I was down and out there in that overwhelming snowy field... There were selfless Angels up there on that road.. going to work. Who got out of their cars, discussed with each other...AND CAME TO GET ME. Late for work? Dirtied their clothes? Risked their own safety, and forfeited their own comfort... To come and get me out of there!! They assessed the situation, and told me the plan. I did what they said, and little by little...the car moved and moved until it got back on the road. And I kept timidly crawling and navigating the conditions. (They had told me that if all went well, not to stop). Bursting with gratitude, and had no way of saying a big THANK YOU to them for helping me, all I could do was to gently honk). I made it home 'IN ONE PIECE'!! For some reason, it was all still so surreal. Did those Beautiful and Kind Souls make it to work on time? Were their clothes dirty? Or dishevelled? Did they have to explain to their boss what happened? Did boss believe them or think it might be a 'the dog ate my homework' story? I don't know. (There was no way for me to know a lot of things about them...coming out of that situation) What I DO know is that I THANK THEM with all my heart. That I have no moral right to not 'Think Twice'. That I must "Think Twice" and PAY KINDNESS AND HUMANITY FORWARD. PS. If you've read to the end of this, I thank you. One Love
