    First thing I noticed, was that he was on his knees. Instantly wrong there. Never teach on the knees. Ever. Not even on the very first confined water session. Would be far better to end the use of "secondary donate" regulator setups. Secondary donate has never once, ever, worked in any real-life, documented event. In many cases, the out of air diver drowned the donating diver while fighting for the reg in their mouth. Start teaching 100% of all courses using a primary donate regulator setup for all students at every level. If you lose your reg in that setup, you have three options for recovery, and in all of them, you immediately retrieve and use your secondary second stage to breath off of while you retrieve your primary. I would also add to completely abandon jacket BC's too. They're worthless. Backplate and Wing BC's not only make learning to dive far easier for the student, they make your job as the instructor far easier too. They are cheaper and far superior over all Jackets or hybrid back inflates.

      Tell me you didn't watch the video without telling me you didn't watch it. If you had, you would have seen and heard that we do not teach on the knees, ever! At 1 minute in I say that we do not dive kneeling so why would you teach a diver like that. Sure, primary donate is a great option and likely the better option but your claim that secondary donate has never worked is just plain wrong and is just hyperbole. I love backplate wings to say jackets are worthless is again, hyperbole. Most dive centers in the world use them so therefore they are not useless as they in fact are being used. Are they superior? Yes they are and it does make teaching easier but the jacket BCD will never go away. Dive centers would have to get rid of all their rental gear and replace it. All at a loss because if no one is going to dive jacket BCDs, then there is no way to recoup that loss. I believe you mean well but dealing in absolutes and hyperbole is dangerous.

      @@pranadive No. I did, indeed, watch the entire video before commenting. I agreed with your assessment to never teach on the knees. Don't be so offended as to assume the worst automatically when you read something. No, secondary donate does not work, and has never worked in real-life events. I stand by my statement. And yes, absolutely, jacket BC's are worthless garbage. I never said they would go away, but they are still worthless garbage. Here too, I stand by my statement.

      @@pinnacledivingco Oh no one on the internet can offend me. And I did not assume anything. You said and I quote " that he was on his knees. Instantly wrong there. Never teach on the knees. Ever. Not even on the very first confined water session." That statement would not need to be made if you indeed did know that we do not teach that way. As for the secondary donate, your statement is not factual. I know a diver who saved another using his secondary therefore it has worked in a real-world situation. Is the best choice? No it is not which is why I used to dive primary donate when I did single cylinder backmount dives but I don't dive single cylinders anymore.

    I agree with checking both regs underwater. I also check for a poorly sealing diaphragm by breathing the regulator with the bottle closed. If there is no pressure in the lines, you shouldn’t be able to suck any air out. If you can, you have a leak somewhere.

    this is 100% the correct methodology. also, i wish more agencies taught long hose (or minimally necklace secondary + primary donate) as their method. if anything ever occurs with my primary im grabbing my necklaced secondary reg and using that until i can find my primary. a few months ago i actually saw a father son (older father that honestly had no business scuba diving without a refresher). the son was messing with his camera, which he also shouldnt have had given his inexperience, and lost his primary... while he was trying to get it back his dad turned around and whacked him in the head with his fin knocking off his mask. dude freaked out pretty hard while trying to make sense of things. everything is easier when you can breathe. always, always, always make sure you can breathe-- it buys you time. time buys you the ability to calm down, not panic, and solve the problem... or let your buddy solve your problem. why put yourself on a breath clock when you dont have to?

    Nice! ... my new favorite technique!! I have been tying my boltsnaps using the technique demonstrated by ISE that you referenced. Indeed, it is a bit awkward to do as you commented. The method you demonstrated is indeed better IMO. A thought: While many of the videos on tying boltsnaps address where to tie it along the length of the hose (like a hand width from the 2nd stage), none discuss controlling the position of where you tie it around the circle of the hose. Since, when properly tied, the boltsnap is fixed in place, having it in the wrong position (since the hose cannot rotate) can make clipping it off awkward, as well as having it poke you in the cheek for the one used to clip off your reg. I find the correct position by setting up a tank and reg on my BC and running the hoses to find the right orientation as the hoses naturally curl to their diving positions. I wrap a piece of painter's tape on the hose and use a Sharpie to mark the location. Hope this helps! Thanks and keep up the good work!

    • @pranadive
      @pranadive 2 місяці тому

      Thank you for the comment. I find your position idea interesting but will say that even when tied properly, I have never had an issue slightly rotating the position of the boltsnap. Cave line with move on the rubber hoses. It won't move easily if tied like I have shown, but you can manipulate it enough to get the boltsnap in a more comfortable position. Having said that, I will give your solution a try as I am all for trying new things and seeing for myself what works and what is suboptimal.

    Sorry, I disagree. It makes much more sense for me to get that one regulator back from which you know that it worked before you lost it. there could always be an failure at your alternate air supply which you don't know. As we see in the video it is no problem to get your primary regulator back.

    • @pranadive
      @pranadive 2 місяці тому

      I appreciate your comment but your argument is a bit flawed. A second stage regulator, being an on-demand valve, will fail open, which means it will free flow. They will not fail closed meaning they do not give gas. Given those facts, how could you have a failure of the secondary or AAS which you did not know about? Also, we breathe from both regs on land and also no deeper than 6m when doing the S-drill to make sure they breathe dry. Lastly, you are talking about your diving while this video is specifically talking about teaching this in the Open Water course. Two different situations.

    Hello Turk! I’m experiencing a similar problem with my Perdix AI, specifically with the right button. In my case, it’s even worse because the button came off slightly, and since it was under the silicone case, I didn’t notice it. Water got inside when I started the dive. I was waiting for the computer to turn on, but it never did. I started panicking when I noticed water inside the screen compartment. That’s when I began checking for leaks and found the right button out of place.I bought it in 2019, so it’s now 5 years old with 200 dives. I checked the battery compartment, and it was completely dry, with the battery in good condition. I’m from Portugal and have already contacted Shearwater’s support center in Europe. They’ve asked me to send my unit without any accessories. I mailed it to them today and am now waiting for their feedback once they receive it.I have a friend who has had a Teric for several years without any issues and was completely satisfied. He had one issue with the depth sensor, and they replaced it with a brand new unit. I’ll see what my experience will be in the coming weeks. I was searching for similar problems on the web and found your video, which I appreciate you sharing. It gave me some peace of mind.

    I like the video, and that is how I teach it, too. I never understood why it was done another way. In case of a real emergency, the diver who learned it this way will always have air. The person who does make bubbles and can’t recover will panic, make an emergency ascent, and not remember at this moment that he has an octopus. I asked this question to all advanced students who did their basic training elsewhere, and they even told me this.

    Switching my computer to my right hand. Didn't even think about this. Although I can still see it, it does take more effort and I can eliminate that just by swapping the arm it is on. Thanks for the tip. I was taught 1 handed air signaling in OW, probably because my instructor is also a tech diver. He had a lot of pet peeves, but they seem legit. We dove in a shared grotto, it wasn't until I saw some of the other instructors from other shops until I really understood his reasoning and appreciated the way he taught us. From my 4 OW dives, my pet peeves are: - Excessive noise makers, clickers, bangers, etc. Especially in an instructional environment. If you have to use those, you do not have your students attention nor respect (my opinion). - The word "flippers" LOL. - Unprepped - foggy masks. I know it can happen to anyone, but the over abundance of unprepped masks was staggering. It doesn't take taking a scuba course to learn how to prep a mask. - Cheapskates - I am 100000% all for getting a good deal, budgeting your money around. Especially on initial investments. BUT - buying the cheapest crap you can find because it is cheap - then knocking on the guys with higher quality gear as if they are elitists, bougie, or whatever, is just stupid and a pet peeve. I heard one guy say "I'm going home and ordering everything from Temu and Ali-Express." Sadly, he was dead serious.

    • @pranadive
      @pranadive 3 місяці тому

      Noise makers/tank bangers drive me crazy and I agree with you. -They are fins! LOL I have never seen anyone make fun of someone for having high-end gear unless it is someone with 7 dives and they are decked out, from head to toe, in the most expensive things their local dive centers sell. But I would say that it is the dive center that should be shamed and not the diver. You put people in the best gear you have, would recommend and dive yourself that also fits into their budget. No need sell them a less than optimal item because it has higher margins.

    This is how I learned as well. I was also taught an alternative to the sweep by the leg, to sweeping by your ear. top hose should be primary. I have longer arms, so that is my preferred method in my VERY short diving career :). Both my son and I like training - whether it is in cycling, with firearms, etc. - we plan to treat scuba exactly the same. We have plenty of places to dive here in FL - fresh and saltwater. But we do enjoy just training and practicing as well, it is fun but also helps to avoid the accident train when it comes rolling through.

    • @pranadive
      @pranadive 3 місяці тому

      The swipe by the ear is what we call the "reach method" and it works for some and not so well for others. Turk used to work in Florida, in Lauderdale by the Sea. Keep doing what you are doing. Practicing on every dive is a great thing.

      Hi @pranadive thank you this wonderful video! Just a question, for sliding bungees, how do u get the bungees to right position for dive?

    • @pranadive
      @pranadive Місяць тому

      @@chesterchong8704 To get into the harness, you slide them down. Once in and prior to attaching the wing bungee, you slide them back up. Then when in the water, you attach them as you normally would to the cylinder valves. They stay in the place the entire dive. If you have further question on this, feel free to email me and I will see if I can help or I will make another video on just this topic.

    These were some surprisingly great observations!

    So I am a raid instructor; have taught this as well. Draw backs I’ve found is that this reg recovery couldn’t be performed if your buddy were using the alternate air source which is most often when it would be deployed, the second is that adding an extra step can (NOT ALWAYS) induce more anxiety in a diver that is panicking. I’ve found best practice is to teach them BOTH ways to ensure they are as confident in all situations

    • @pranadive
      @pranadive 3 місяці тому

      We have not noticed either of those but we appreciate the observations based on your experience. As for the extra step, we have actually found throughout our teaching that switching to AAS reduces the anxiety a new diver gets. They can easily find it, take a couple sanity breaths and then solve the problem.

      @@pranadive oh absolutely, more often than not the sanity breaths help; but every once in a while I find a student who is happier to move straight into the recovery of the primary

    Good catch - I'm hoping (not hopping) to pick up my Peregrine TI this week, I chose the Perigine as I don't need all the bells and whistles of the Perdix, but my vision isn't as good as it used to be so the Screen Size is great, plus the air intergration is a bonus.

    youre right, not many colour grading tutorials for underwater footage. Even less so for GoPro cameras. This helped me alot more than learning how to change the colour of a car.... What settings are you using on your gopro? Lights, filters?

    • @pranadive
      @pranadive 4 місяці тому

      Glad this helped. I have also seen how to change the color on a car and thought it was useless for me. We use lights when we need them. Cloudy days or deeper dives but for sunny days and shallow dives, we don't use them or filters. The filters can be great if you don't white balance and color match in post but if you do, I don't see a need for them. Currently I use the GoPro 12 on a tray with two Orcatorch 910v lights. Shooting in 4k at either 60 FPS or 120 FPS. I think I will do a video on the settings we use here and go through them all.

    Some shops won't even fill unless you got the green and yellow sticker on them

      This cylinder is one of ours and we do not use the stickers. But I know in the U.S. they won't fill them without the stickers on.
