Mushroom House That Stole My Soul
Wow! It's been a long time! I've actually recorded a few videos. It's just a pain in the a$$ to edit them. Luckily I was able to bribe my son into editing for me. I am still recording, and will bring new videos soon!

Harbor Freight Lathe Upgrade - Mounting the Motor
Переглядів 2,5 тис.3 роки тому
I finally finished the motor mount and got everything up on the lathe. Of course, since I finished recording I've completely redone the front, but the motor is still mounted the same. I ended up using the original reeves drive pulley from inside the lathe. I couldn't find another pulley for the shaft that I could afford. It works great now though!

My lathe motor blew on me so I’m upgrading it to a treadmill motor. I’ve looked up a lot of different instructions online but they all seemed to be missing something so I decided to make an all-encompassing guide for upgrading the Harbor Freight 12x36. Everything that I use is inexpensive or improvised. I don’t have expensive tools or materials. Here is where you can find the schematics that I ...

DIY Speed Control for Flex Shaft Tool
Переглядів 12 тис.4 роки тому
So I bought a flex shaft tool earlier this year and mostly love it. Mostly because it only came with a foot pedal for speed control and the foot pedal isn't the most responsive. I could buy a Foredom table dial control but I felt that I could build one for much cheaper. Twenty bucks later and I have a workable table top dial control for my flext shaft tool.

I would have stayed with a foot pedal. You only have two hands, not three, and I find working with a foot controller much more convenient. You're a wood worker, so making a wooden box for the regulator is a nice idea. You could possibly have made a wooden foot pedal as well, I think. Otherwise, I would probably see if there is a regulator that fits in one of the cheap MIDI foot controllers for keyboards. Those are usually pretty sturdy compared to the Vevor foot controller and still do not cost an arm and a leg either. NB: I had a lot more luck with the Vevor stuff I bought. I do have a good pendant motor anyway, but I wanted a second and did not want to spend too much money on it, so I opted for the Vevor. The flex shaft that I got with it feels a bit short compared to my other. The foot pedal is crappy but at least it works flawlessly (yet, I don't feel comfortable to "step on it" as it is so fragile). Maybe, I take it apart and 3D print a more sturdy one as the regulator works fine.

I have had mine for about 3 years. I heard about the foot pedal problems. I must say I never experienced any problems at all. Mine runs from stationary evenly up to full power. I have more trouble holding the pedal down due to a muscle disease than the pedal not working correctly. I honestly can say I am impressed with the whole unit.

Common problem with them. I have had mine for about 3 years. The chuck came out once while I was wood carving. Due to the centrifugal force, the chuck ran along the bench and out the door of my workshop. I chased it down, replaced it and whacked it hard once I replaced it. It has never come apart since. Great unit. I’m extremely impressed with it.

This looks exactly like my Foredom, however it sounds very different. The real thing is quieter and smoother, and likely more powerful. The pedal looks the same as the standard Foredom pedal, but it seems to have issues. My pedal is very easy to control, from slow speeds all the way to full throttle. And that's just the standard plastic one. Foredom has a metal one as well. Mine came with the quick change hand piece. I have the hand piece like the one you show as well, although I can't remember if that was included or if I bought it separately. I use both often. This looks like a pretty good deal for what I've seen these go for. It will work for it's intended purpose. If you're going to use it every day, and make money with it like I do, invest in the real thing. It will probably save you money when you don't have to replace it after a year. For a hobbyist though, this looks way better than a Dremel for most things, and it's probably close in price to the most expensive Dremel.

Depends on what you use it for. As a jeweller, I prefer foot control. You keep the rotary tool at stationary until just before you start working on the piece you're at. And then you want to be able to cut power every now and then or change speeds. No third hand available to do that unless you're a mutant.

If you have the spring bolts for that Unistrut you are using, you can easily strap the motor to it. Unistrut is the brand name for that system it belongs to. The brand 'Unistrut', has a huge variety of hardware, and attachments made specifically to mount to those channels.

Just found the review. An eBay seller currently has this for $50. I’m in an industry where what you pay is what you get. And in some instances this is true. I think it’s fair to say at the least that one would need buy 16 to pay as much for a Foredom. If each lasted only a year, a person would still pay less. Aside from this I have a habit of looking for the best deal on good, dependable equipment. And in the past 10 years I’ve come to find that many of these items are made in China and then badged with a quality name by the reputable company. Some differences might be in materials dictated by the US company. And then you have productions from the same company that are blems: cast quality might be off. A coating might be off color, etc. I work for the commercial division of a famous French company and blem tires are often sold at a very low cost. So not all price points are a mark of poor quality. It’s just company quality on visuals doesn’t meet a standard. My advice for making such decisions are no longer novel. Use of an AI app can lead to making sound judgement on a purchase when it comes to true quality at a fair price. It’s a tool I use when comparative shopping in every aspect of my life. Good luck and hope the tip helps.

I would buy a potentiometer and just wire the leads from the one inside the pedal into a new box with the new potentiometer, then throw away the foot pedal.. Simple desk mounted control of speed that will remain constant.. Foot pedals are garbage and even the good ones still leave a lot to be desired in terms of regulating speed..

Hi; Great job for first video. I really enjoyed watching you carve. It would be nice to see the final finished product. I watched another video the other day where an adjustable temperature woodbruner was used to make the rocks, shingles and siding boards. I don't know if it was easier to do than the gouges and a knife or not, but it worked well and didn't cause any chipping of the wood. You might want to experiment with one. Just saying, it might be a way to add additional effects in your carvings.

I may try a dimmer switch also. I have a video. ua-cam.com/video/ATMyfOkyufI/v-deo.html Where I shorten the spring in foot pedal (switch). It works much better now. The switch is a slide switch with electrical component's in it and around 3/4 ways through the actuation the slide drops of and it is powered directly so it takes off!! No graduation. $15 switch. There are nice pedals for around $100-150. More than the price I payd for my rotary. These machines are a bargain get two or three for the price of the Real McCoy.
