I have a strong interest in the time frame of 1900 to 1945--all things Pre War. Love to collect, restore and scratch build or kit-bash std gauge in the tinplate fashion. 99% of the time--what ever you see on the layout will be time related to the P:re War trains and that era.

That's cool Steven
That truck turned out great. Respect on how you build this thing completly from scratch. Why exactly would the passenger car need two of these or why would the motor burn out? Is it too heavy? Looking forward to see what you'll build for it, but actually I like this setup as well: who else has a motorized and armed gondola? 😂
Yes, the passenger car is much to heavy---it can pull it but it's a struggle to get it to speed---two would handle it just fine. In time you'd just burn the motor up or wear out the gears or both. 😯
Impressive!
Great vidio, make a good base for a goose car. Thanks for the morning coffee...
LOL----I've re-did it a number of times since the video--BUT----I may be at the final version.
Nice Steven!
It appears you are building from scratch a power unit similar to pre/post war Lionel steamer drive. Motor in truck which is what the old steamers did also with spur gears. Lionel created a frame of the drive wheels and an AC motor. The big difference you are using a DC can motor. Are you planning on powering more than one axle? Most all my 027 engines are custom modified twin motors with all wheels driving having modified aluminum frames and weighted magna traction in different forms.😊😊😊
Runs quite well,we all knew that you would figure it out!
Nice work!
Runs nice and smoothly!
Steve, If you can use a few of those Roberts Lines type trucks (your powered one), just ask. If you are going to York I'll bring them.
Jim, yes, I'd like to try some---I will not be going to York, but I'm more than willing to cover all cost to send me out at couple.
@@stevendouglas6594 Sorry you are not coming to York, was great to meet you there.
Just like Joshua Cowen Lionel intended.
You did a good job building that train
She`s coming along nicely. While I`ve been pulling hairs for a month trying to squeeze a Marx S/R motor into a 1939 Am. Flyer Cast all Brass Trim 420 Shell. Finding mounting foundations has become a nightmare. I thought I saw a prewar cousin to it in the background on the tracks in one of your videos. I`m trying to retain a sock original exterior look.
Mounting anything in this stuff can be and is a hair puller---that's what I like about the 10 style std truck--IF--you can get a motor in it, the rest is easy.
Steve, I love your videos. Keep them coming.
Your videos and commentary are just spot on ! Your ideas and talents are even more impressive. I cannot wait to see the finished product of that power truck . I have two different Ira Keeler trolley motors that I should study more . Looking forward to seeing your next update.
Awesome project. I was lucky enough to have Ira Keller fix one of my McCoy trolley motors and build me another from scratch . Two different motors for two different trolleys . I too thought about copying the one like you are doing . Keep the videos coming , they are not only educational but quite interesting and entertaining. Thanks
I don't miss summer in central Indiana.
LOL---I don't either, but I'm stuck with summer in Central Illinois---this morning it's 68 deg--nice.
wow, i love that track
Wow, that is so cool! Dual tracks working together.
WOW! I learn something every day! There is a dual gauge standard n 027 tubular track out there! 😮
0 gauge ---0 gauge and std gauge rail are the same thing---027 is shorter and smaller.
@@stevendouglas6594 I stand corrected! I didn't learn anything today! 😐
@@jamesdenny4734 Close enough for government work and your heart was in the right place. Life is good. 😁😁
I might add that you could use bushings on the axle shafts or make life easy and just slide in a Marx motor.
I've got a box full of bronze bushings, and I've added them to some of those cheap Alco motors I convert to standard, the holes are egg shape and I thought about putting them on this but said ---what the hell---everything is tight, smooth and straight. Never thought about a Marx motor--the trouble with Marx is the lack of off the shelf parts ---I can get a boat load of Lionel Pre and Post War gears and play mix and match until you get it right.
She be, that there a sight for me bloodshot eyes.
That’s some interesting Track
I made it.
I Have a extra lionel line Motor and gears
Thank you for the offer---I've finally got the gears I needed ---looking at a 16 to 1 ----that will have a decent speed ---the real challenge is getting the grass to mesh , and be smooth.
Is that pre-war motor out of a 253? You will get it figured out. 💯
@@johnknippenberg-LandmarkYards I'm not sure. They used this motor in steam and electric. It's the motor that I prefer to use for standard gauge if it's really going to pull string of cars
Another great project , I'm sure you'll get it worked out and running. Thanks for sharing.. GMan
Steve, nice design Recommend that you capture the key dimensions of the geometry for both sides. SendCutSend would make these up for about $2 a part in low quantity (including all sized holes and slots). Did you buy standard standoffs to set the plates apart? That would make it all easy to put together. Also recommend you look into shoulder bolts to hold down the gears.
Yes---I use standoffs for all sorts of things. If I knew I could get all the dimensions right after I made one that would run and run well--I'd give SCS a try---LOL---I don't measure anything---I start with a center line , set the wheel where I think it should go, then I aline the gears and glue them to the surface, drill and tap the holes and pop the gears off and clean off the glue--put it back together and see how smooth it will run.
The door on my dumpster is wide open. Me likem plenty good.
Awesome 224 set, one of my favorites! I have a black one with the whistling 2224 diecast tender and a gunmetal one with a 1689W tender. I have those passenger cars too, but someone repainted them and added post-war knuckle couplers, so I run them with a 681 S2 Steam Turbine.
Always nice to see someones first train sets and hear the story behind them. We all fell for it at some point 😂
Excellent progress.
Well---I keep messing with it--I hope to get it running.
Nice trip trough history. Never knew about the Hawaii dollars. Very clever.
Yes--because if Japan had taken the islands the US Government would have deemed all Hawaiian money worthless ---just paper. This bill is also a short snorter --something all service men did--they would sign their name, date and maybe where they were--I've seen many bills like this---the one I have is signed USS Iowa July 21st 1945. The Iowa was off the coast of the Japanese home land shelling the ever living hell out of them at that time. On the 29th of Aug 1945 the Iowa and USS Missouri sail into Tokyo Bay ---the War is over--on Sept 2, 1945 the surrender was signed on the deck of the Missouri ----I've got a bill that's--Been there---done that.
Thanks for the history
Awesome job!
Those are great.
My dad was a machinist and made all kinds of parts for his mechanical work. He would have loved the way you manufacture parts. He would say 'what do you need?' Go to his shop and come back with 2 of them. Amazing!
LOL----Your father was a machinist---I'm not ---I just jump in and give it a try. Sometimes I win, sometimes I loose, but it's still fun.
Very cool project, looking good!
NIce progress
Again an interesting project going on. Thanks for this little field trip!
Your welcome--My wife was a school teach and she did show me how the keep the Arselings under control.--LOL---I'm ""about" done with the tank car--it has not been as simple or straight forward as I had thought.🤔
Turned out great! Love the chaindrive and the stamps are very neat. Before you know it there is a flock of geese...
As Uhtred, son of Uhtred said---Density is all.
Me Likem!
Real cute and very mechanical with the chain drive.😊 It reminds me of the Beverly Hillbilly truck. Just no Granny on top sitting in her rocker.
You know--I made this---loosely-- based on a real truck that the RG&S had---I went out and looked at it again--it does look some what like the BH's truck
Looks like you may be thinking of using Aurora T-jet gears!
Never heard of them but I will be looking them up. It is my lack of understanding in the gear world that has thrown a monkey wrench into some of the things I'd like to try.
Looks awesome! I can't decide which I like better.
Really nice. My dad's family had chain drive Macks when they first came out. Before that it was horse and wagons.
Yeah---I've got a thing for things you can lose an arm or a leg in---But after all I was a farm kid--a farm kid still with ten fingers and toes.
I too love the chain drive ! Two great projects.
Great video . I have a question about your gearing , why not eliminate the gears and use a serpentine belt or chain drive ? I’m hoping to make something similar using either a belt or chain . Fingers crossed !! I noticed a MTH Trolley motor/truck on your track . I have one that barely runs and I’m not sure why . Have you ever taken them apart and if so was it somewhat easy ? I made an MU set using said motor and it ran great for a few years then one day not so great . I would love to get it up and running again .
The reason for the chain is the time frame I'm trying to recreate ---erector set gears and chains, lots of oil and lots of noise. Everything I make , I make in the Pre War fashion. I ""try"" to put myself in the mind of 13 year old kid, during the depression, War clouds over Europe and dad making just enough money for the family to get by. Maybe yeah have a cheap little train set and of course you love it to death and with out the extra money you make stuff to add to it---my elevated is made from scrap lumber that we found. I try to really live the time but I'm damn glad I didn't have to---Try ServoCity---they sell all kinds of nylon gears and chain--something I may try someday in a drive unit. Gears, chain and pitch mess me up ---I need somebody to explain it all to me over a couple of beers.
@@stevendouglas6594 I’m hip to all your reasons and try to do the same . As for the belts and chains , again I too do not know a lot about them so what did I do ? I bought a belt and serpentine gears to experiment with some day . When that happens I will post photos . I truly enjoy your videos and your talent, they inspire me to do more kitbashing and to think outside of the box . Keep up the great work !
@@johnniewalker9348 Like you, I really know nothing about belts and gears but that's what Dave Waterman uses in a lot of the things he builds. Go for it, you'll never learn if ya don't try---and let me know what you've learned when you do. The MTH trolley motors ---I know nothing of the workings of an electric motor --the two I have are just about new but where that loop hooks to the axle , it lets the motor sit so low it grounds out---on both of them, and I don't know why. I put a piece of heavy gauge wire in the loop to hold it up and it runs fine--but that ain't right--I'm missing something ---but I don't now what.
Love the chain drive. Nice job. 🎉
Runs nice and smooth already. Great idea about the chain drive
LOL---Yes, if I can get it to work.
Put traction tires on it.
