Over the Next Horizon
Приєднався 27 жов 2019
Greetings fellow travelers. Have you ever found yourself somewhere completely new and wished you could share the experience with others? Have these adventures ever sparked new interests, hobbies, or skills in you? This is my attempt to share these traits in myself. Come with me as I explore the back country, design and build vehicles for these trips, realize I didn't think of everything and do it all over again, and find ways to see the world from angles that are completely new to me. Let's prepare for and take a trip Over the Next Horizon.
Replacing the Brake Caliper and Line on the Driver Side Front of a 2005 Ram 2500
I'm fixing the catching disk brake on my Ram 2500. As it turns out, there was something loose inside the brake hose that was holding pressure against the rotor and causing the brakes to drag. I hope you enjoy.

Did u buy the small coned red lights from???? I can’t find someone that sells them with two wires
I got those through Amazon. Here’s the link. It seems they still have them. These lights are incandescent though. I wasn’t able to find an LED replacement for the small ones that I liked. www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B0CYTC3G94?psc=1&ref=ppx_pop_mob_b_asin_title&th=1
Put mine on about the same time as yours. Works for me often in 100f here during the summer and I can see a different. I have both an oil temp gauge, one that goes where the dipstick is and head temperature gauges too.
Thanks for the comment. That’s great information. I figured it must make a difference. I still haven’t installed permanent head temp gauges on mine. I need to do that next.
So the video is about how to replace a broken radio with a broken radio...
Not at all. After 24 hours, the new radio integrated perfectly with the Jeep and it’s been working fine ever since. Thanks for the comment.
Where did you get it from
From what I can tell, the eBay company I bought it from isn’t selling them anymore.
how do you start it
*All practical tests of ground-based small wind turbines show the same thing: 1) They hardly produce any electricity. 2) They do not last long!* With solar panels, you can generate at least 10 to 20 times more green electricity with the same investment! Reliable and almost maintenance-free. Moreover, the wind is extremely gusty, which almost always greatly reduces the service life. 9 out of 10 systems stop working after a few years. With the KiteX WindCatcher, I bet that 9 out of 10 systems are defective after just a few months of continuous operation. Better to use flexible solar panels!
Thanks for the comment. I agree with your findings. Any time you have something that moves, it will wear out. Solar cells technology has advanced to a point that makes them very reliable and the ability to keep them set up maximizes production where having to set this up means it only functions when stationary. I have noticed that flexible solar panels are less efficient per unit price than monocrystsline panels. I do know KiteX has tested this turbine in gusty conditions for two years continuous use without failure. I agree the use of so many moving parts and rope to maintain function does leave several potential weak links and I wonder how long it will function over time. I’ll let you all know how it turns out.
Still happy with this machine? Considering a purchase for my RV.
Thanks for the question. I am still happy with it. The smaller quantity and ease of use when compared to a full size ice cream freezer are great! It would go well in a camper as long as you have enough room in your freezer to freeze the bowl.
Pronounced wrong. Boondootop, please. It is my language, I am from South Africa 🇿🇦. Some will just never learn.
Thanks for the correction.
you drive faster than I would
It seems to like 55 mph. The engine is smooth and it’s stable on the road. I still don’t trust full highway speeds but I’ve seen videos of people doing those speeds.
I want gear up.
It’s a nice ride and I like having the two wheel drive available for mud and snow. Thanks for the comment.
I found that bumper at KS Overland and I cannot justify the $5,500 for it. I think its amazing and probably the ONLY option but holy christ.
It’s gone up in price I see. It was quite a bit less when I bought from them but I think it was still pretty new when I got it five years ago. I’m really happy with it but I agree. That price tag is a little steep.
you bought the same I'm going to buy
I hope you enjoy it! I know I have. Thanks for the comment.
I've added a light, homemade, right sidecar to my Yamaha FZ6R. I've followed all the standard lean-out and toe-in, and my tricycle tracks true. But when I apply the brakes (either front or rear or both) the rig tends to pull left. I figure the sidecar, although very light, wants to pivot the bike to the left, and that the only solution would be a brake on the third wheel. Any explanation or suggestion?
I agree with you. The side car will drag under acceleration and its momentum will try to keep it moving when the brakes on the bike are applied. A brake on the side car would definitely help even out slowing. I just have to remember to use the rear brake mostly since mine has the sidecar brake connected there. Acceleration is a little harder. When mine has both rear wheels locked together, it accelerates straight but when in one wheel drive, it does pull right some. As far as I know, the only ways to minimize this is two wheel drive or making the side car as light as possible and it sounds like you did. Making sure the sidecar tire is fully inflated will also minimize the pull. I’m sure you’ve already made sure of that. Thanks for the comments. It sounds like you’re setting up a great rig!
@@overthenexthorizon8271 I wish I could learn to love trikes.
Thank you for this information.
Glad it was helpful!
Thanks for all the videos. I just backed their new 2.0 version solo. Since youve been using it for awhile now, how have you liked it overall?
Thanks for the comment. I do like it. I only use it to wash dishes now, not for the other features. It works great for one or two people used daily. I like how easy it is to track water usage with it. I do wish it had a second rack for small things. The 2.0 seems to be fixing this. It should be a good upgrade.
Call Uconnect directly. I did and got a NEW radio.
Thanks for the comment.
And what did you tell them? Was your car still under a warranty by any chance?
@breakablesilences told them the radio was delaminating and that the channels were ghosting. The guy I talked to asked for the vin# said I had to take my vehicle to a Jeep dealer and have them look at the radio..did that and they confirmed the thing was junk. Waited 10 days Uconnect sent new radio to the dealer they contacted me set up appointment and bingo.. new radio was installed free of any charges. Good luck!
@breakablesilences no vehicle was not under waranty..bought it used.
I just purchased mine and will be making a similar video. Such a great company and this latest design iteration is the one I've been waiting for. Have you set yours back up yet?
Did you use the wiring to existing lights?
Thanks for the question. No. I’m going to wire these to a relay and dash switch. I think the existing wiring could handle the current if you wanted to cut it under the dash and reuse it without the flasher circuits. I’m going to use 12 gauge. It should be overkill but I’ll never have to worry about it.
This engine is splash-lubricated on the bottom end. It has a gear-type displacing (not pressurizing) 'pump' that moves oil to the top end; this oil returns to the sump via gravity. It's not a pressurized system and I suspect the necessary additional oil volume and routing will only slow the oil's circulation and defeat the intent of the cooler.
Thanks for the comment.
Have you tried running this with the cooler pipes disconnected? Another channel did this and showed that under normal conditions the oil does not get pumped through the cooler. There simply is not enough pressure.
That’s very possible. I thought about installing an electric auxiliary pump. I haven’t tried running it with the lines disconnected yet.
When the breaker tripped and you restarted the machine it went back to zero, which is why you needed to refill the fresh water tank and empty the drain water because you were, essentially, starting all over again. That’s how digital appliances work. Except for some aquarium and reptile environment controls, most digital appliances do not remember where they are in a setting. They often remember the last STARTING setting and require that you push the start button again.
Thanks for the insight. That makes a lot of sense.
G'day, I was curious of how you found sleeping in the tent in cold and snowy climates. I used to have a slim clamshell style and in snowy conditions, ice would form on the inside. Have you had this issue with yours? How does the tent retain the heat well? I understand you use a diesel heater but have you slept in cold conditions without it or would you say it is a must? Thank you in advance.
Hello, I’ve slept in the tent down to 0 Celsius with just a wool blanket. It does a pretty good job retaining heat even if the wind is blowing. I did notice when the temps got colder than that, the mattress can’t retain the heating even added a reflective blanket beneath me. There is some condensation on the inside of the lower half of the clamshell in cold weather when not using the heater but the tent and upper shell are condensation free. I noticed there are open spaces beneath the tent where I could install some 1/2 inch closed cell phone and place a sheet of something below it to protect it. If I did more winter camping without the heat, I’d probably try that. I also thought about placing something to allow some air movement beneath the mattress to limit condensation. Hope that helps.
Thanks for this video! It helped me remove the bezel and radio. UA-cam is awesome.
Sounds great! I’m glad it helped.
It would have really been helpful to see how that dash comes off.
Sorry. I only pulled it apart far enough to replace the radio. You can just pull up on the plastic surrounding the shifter. Once that’s up, you can pull the trim away from the dash starting at the bottom and working your way around until the whole thing separates.
Did you use the Windcatcher much and if so what did you think?
It’s been in storage ever since the initial test since the RV I’m using it with is still under construction.
Thank you!!
You're welcome!
What are the colors what do they stand for
I’m honestly not sure what each color is as far as components. When I was looking for a wiring diagram, I couldn’t find one either that information. I’d just recommend finding a unit that has the same set of colors on it as the one you’re trying to replace. Thanks for the question.
The sides scrape a lot better if you use 2 hands. One to hold the spatula and the other right above it to steady the vibrations and hold the scraper exactly where you want it. Similar to how you held it towards the middle of the process(before you switched back to one hand). If you start out that way, it makes a big difference. Nice video.
Thanks for the tip.
Why is a dish-washing cycle 2.5 hours? Wouldn't it be better to hand wash?
Thanks for the comment. I considered that too. If I was just washing a few things, hand washing makes more sense. However, I'm planning on multi-dish meals with a higher dish count and I found the amount of water needed to rinse after washing by hand was about 5 times more than using the dishwasher. We'll see if it's worth it.
Do you have a parts list for your recycling water system? I'm theory crafting an off-grid vehicle. I've been thinking of buying an ambulance because it is mostly already complete and has a lot of external storage.
Sorry for the late reply. I had re rebuild the list of parts. I'm still working on this so there are still changes happening to the list. God is that LOUD and NOISY.
Thanks for the comment. I’d say it’s equal in amplitude to a typical under counter dish washer I’ve been around in multiple homes. I expect it seems louder on the video because it’s on a metal table, in the metal drum that is the bus and the camera was a foot away from it.

Hello. I haven’t used it in a while. Right now it’s in storage until the bus is ready for it. Thanks for the comment.
Good job 👍 I am just a bit surprised you had this “problem” because the instructions from kitex are actually very very detailed.
They definitely are. I think I struggled because every turbine I’ve seen turns blade into the wind and this one seems to orient blades downwind and I’ll admit I was trying to set it up based only on the videos and not on the written instructions.

Can you tell me will will heater still work if I pull screen that is delaminating . Don’t want to lose heat when order new screen. Thanks
On mine, I replaced the whole unit. I would assume if you replace the screen with a comparable version and reconnect the ribbon cables, it should function as the original did. That said, I did find an aftermarket adapter that allows mounting a DIN radio in the dash. That adapter adds a row of climate control buttons below the unit so you no longer need the touch screen to use climate control. When this radio of mine fails, I’ll probably take the aftermarket path. Thanks.
Your upgrades are right on target. 👍👍 Where did you purchase the seat rack? Hoping to see some of your videos showing the effectiveness of the yellow spots and fork mounted lights. Again , great job on the upgrades.

Thanks for the video! I have a 2018 Gear Up that I put an oil cooler on. I didn't buy the kit outright. I put together the parts from various sources on the internet and saved about $145. I have not noticed much difference in the engine temperature and I really don't think the oil pump has adequate flow to reliably push the engine oil up hill. That being said, I don't plan to take it off any time soon. If nothing else, it looks cool on the rig! Ha, ha.
Nice! I agree. I haven’t really noticed any difference in temp but I like the extra volume.
Where did you get your’s? They aren’t available now in North America
I got mine through their Kickstarter campaign.
@@overthenexthorizon8271 It's too bad they aren't available here now. They use less water and have some other features unavailable on anything over here. Some of the brands like Comfee are coming out with models that are trying to copy the Bob's features, but haven't gotten there yet The Confee 6L [Bob uses 3L, half as much water] has a pop-open door, and a UV light like the latest Bob model, but only while you're washing, not available as a separate dry "cycle" I don't know how much those modern features are worth, but the Bob seems more efficient. Just wondering how it's going. I have a 600 watts wind generator on a sixteen foot pole that's attached to a piece of angle iron that I bolted to the barn rafters. Im getting 150-275 watts today out of mine. I'm thinking about raising it three more feet. It's chained to the side of the base pipe instead of being in the top of it. It's concreted into the ground. I think it would get cleaner air if it was at nineteen feet. I have mine charging twenty lead acid batteries but I have a 24 volts 100 amps lithium battery 🔋 coming Wednesday and I'll get another one in December. I have 1600 watts of solar panels hooked to a 4215 BN Epever charge controller, and a 24 volts Aims Power inverter charger 2000 watts. I used a piece of 1 1/2 inch ID pipe. There's only five feet above the barn so it doesn't have guy wires yet. I already have another set of five blades and hub to use to build another wind generator. There's two short videos of mine spinning on my channel.
Nice! I have a different turbine that sounds more like yours. This one is on a fixed mast and I haven’t tried raising it yet but I’m considering placing a mount on the bus roof to get it higher up. So far this style blade is proving much better than the fixed blades on my other turbine. When I get wind that isn’t obstructed by the tree line, I’m getting about 50 watts from a 10 mph breeze. This turbine maxes out at 200 watts though do it’s not bad so far. Thanks for the comment.
That's what I used, a hot air tool and my fingernail. Once the surface gets warm enough, the vinyl letters peel off without too much trouble. It took me about an hour to rmove most of the larger lettering.
Agreed. I was having more trouble with the reflective decals. I think I’m going to try a heat gun and a putty knife or a scraper. Thanks for the comment.

You should consider using a aqua-hot diesel fired hydronic heater.
Thanks for the comment. That’s definitely my plan. I’ll be installing a heat sink on the wood stove and I have a roof mounted hot water panel I’m going to integrate into it too.
