    I’ve been speaking in an upward inflection for as long as I can remember. I had a presentation to make a while back & the men commented that I did great but I sounded too soft. I’ve been working on having a less soft tone but still couldn’t figure out what was missing. I just learnt about downward and upward inflection today. I can’t wait to transform my speech 🥰

    The speech pattern that really gets me also is answering a 'yes or no' question with a sentence instead of a "yes" or "no." Example: "Are you going to the movies tonight?" Instead of answering, "Yes," the person says, "I am." Uuuugggghhhhh!!!! I don't know why I let it drive me so crazy. Maybe it's because the person answering you is wanting to not lose control of the conversation and not be 'submissive' by accepting the role of answerer. Instead, by forming a sentence, they are slowing your questioning and initiating some momentum of their own. To me, it feels unfriendly and distancing, like the person is putting up a wall or a defense or whatnot. Finally, I may be wrong, but it seems like attractive women use this speech pattern or style the most, maybe partly because they have been hurt or taken advantage in the past?? Or maybe because they see it as in vogue or fashionable or trendy??

      This is interesting to me, because I took an Irish language class once and learned that in that language, there is no "yes"/"no" response. Instead, you anwer with a negative or positive sentence. I am doing X or I'm not doing X. Plain old yes/no is not an option.

    So, for the people that do narration in UA-cam videos, downward inflection actually shows confidence in what they are saying? This one channel I watch, his voice is always Downard, at the end. (Basically, monotone through most of it) If so, that actually makes sense. I do a lot of the downward one (And no smile) but, it's not intentional. lol. That does actually worry me, if people are taking that as an act of aggression or maybe they think I'm angry. Humans are complex! I assumed inflection in voice, was just sub-consciously happening. Anyways, that's why I decided to look this up. It just didn't make sense. I do it because I have bad depression and so, it comes out like that in my voice. (Monotone as well) Definitely not intentional. (I'm sure most people can relate to that) That is good to know that it actually has meaning! Great video.

    Powerful. WOW. And what incredible techniques. Thank you. Yes, I think I've used the upward inflection my entire life because I HAVE been insecure not confident. Additionally, my personality is humble and kind and I attempt to create a "oneness" with others. However, as a middle-aged woman now, I wish to convey the uniqueness of my Self and the expertise of what I have to share. Perfect 👌

    It's not about being seen as friendly, it's about being seen as weak and irritating. The upward inflection causes hostility and people ignoring or mistreating those who use it because it's extremely irritating and is used usually by those who are stupid, weak and not worth the time. It's not because people view it as friendly.

    "To be right, and to look good." I would replace those with "To feel safe, and to feel valued." For many people, being "wrong" doesn't feel safe - it leads to other abandonment, or self abandonment. Like wise, for many people, to look "weak" doesn't feel safe ie. I need your approval and if I can't have it, I'll just amplify my self approval. Terry is talking about being aware of this in our self and others, and letting down our shield. However, he's not talking about throwing away our shield. We shouldn't expect a high level of safety in all our relationships - but we should expect it in our closest relationships, because if we can't...why have them?

    Is this anecdotal or is there any research which backs this up? For example a study that clusters salespeople into "up talkers" and "downward inflectors" then comparing those two conditions to their quarterly or annual sales figures.

    • @JasonReagan84
      @JasonReagan84 3 роки тому

      Does there have to be "official stamped research" for you to comprehend (and hear) the benefit to this? What about "anecdotes" do you find non-valuable?

    • @LGTMshipit
      @LGTMshipit 3 роки тому

      I think that someone forcing themselves to do eight weeks of daily training in order to transform the way they speak should have more than just a story of how little Johnny stopped watching TV when his mom changed the tone of her voice to go on. Consider also that uptalking is more commonly associated with women and some other cultures. Could it be that the suggestion that everyone adopt downward inflection is just sexist and racist? Is this something that just puts a disproportionate burden on women and people from other cultures? Is this something that has a real, measurable real-world impact on sales numbers, or is it just a grifter grifting? Let's also not forget that "Bond, James Bond" is a work of fiction. People do what he says because that's the way the story was written. Peer reviewed research would help separate a real world impact of inflection from a general opinion and personal preference that has no real-world impact. Could there have been factors other than downward inflection that caused Johnny to suddenly pay attention? Peer reviewed research could help separate "cargo cult" from real world impact. To be very clear, I'm not saying this downward inflection thing is not true, but I am pretty sure it's sexist and racist. If we're going to be walking around saying that this sexist and racist thing *IS* true it would be really cool to have more to go on than a single story of this one client whose son listened to her.
