Hahaha...what a cute woman.
I’ve been speaking in an upward inflection for as long as I can remember. I had a presentation to make a while back & the men commented that I did great but I sounded too soft. I’ve been working on having a less soft tone but still couldn’t figure out what was missing. I just learnt about downward and upward inflection today. I can’t wait to transform my speech 🥰
Hi Amy, i like your videos and want to attend your next free calls. Do you have email notifications for the next one? Id like to attend the next one
Some Australians have a severe upward inflection that grates on my nerves. I can't stand it, and I've always wondered if it's a regional thing or what
Simply try to look with positive perspective and accept that perspective whole heartedly. I like your way of looking it as a story rather than a perspective(big and complex word)❤
Hahaha! The James Bond example was good
☺️ 'Promosm'
This journalists downward inflection is ott once you notice it you can't not notice it's so annoying 😂
You are an inspiration! Keep moving girl!
The speech pattern that really gets me also is answering a 'yes or no' question with a sentence instead of a "yes" or "no." Example: "Are you going to the movies tonight?" Instead of answering, "Yes," the person says, "I am." Uuuugggghhhhh!!!! I don't know why I let it drive me so crazy. Maybe it's because the person answering you is wanting to not lose control of the conversation and not be 'submissive' by accepting the role of answerer. Instead, by forming a sentence, they are slowing your questioning and initiating some momentum of their own. To me, it feels unfriendly and distancing, like the person is putting up a wall or a defense or whatnot. Finally, I may be wrong, but it seems like attractive women use this speech pattern or style the most, maybe partly because they have been hurt or taken advantage in the past?? Or maybe because they see it as in vogue or fashionable or trendy??
I don’t know, but you might be overthinking things a bit…But hey, looks like you can deep dive further on the subject and perhaps discover something new.
This is interesting to me, because I took an Irish language class once and learned that in that language, there is no "yes"/"no" response. Instead, you anwer with a negative or positive sentence. I am doing X or I'm not doing X. Plain old yes/no is not an option.
@@jeanlynch5898 thanks for the input.
It seems younger, attractive women use the upward inflection the most.
Hey, I found this video while looking for exercises or ways to improve my downward tonality. I'm glad I found you. Your video is not only useful, but you're also very entertaining to listen to. You count with a new follower ;)
Just wow.
😊 👍 preciate you

So, for the people that do narration in UA-cam videos, downward inflection actually shows confidence in what they are saying? This one channel I watch, his voice is always Downard, at the end. (Basically, monotone through most of it) If so, that actually makes sense. I do a lot of the downward one (And no smile) but, it's not intentional. lol. That does actually worry me, if people are taking that as an act of aggression or maybe they think I'm angry. Humans are complex! I assumed inflection in voice, was just sub-consciously happening. Anyways, that's why I decided to look this up. It just didn't make sense. I do it because I have bad depression and so, it comes out like that in my voice. (Monotone as well) Definitely not intentional. (I'm sure most people can relate to that) That is good to know that it actually has meaning! Great video.
Powerful. WOW. And what incredible techniques. Thank you. Yes, I think I've used the upward inflection my entire life because I HAVE been insecure not confident. Additionally, my personality is humble and kind and I attempt to create a "oneness" with others. However, as a middle-aged woman now, I wish to convey the uniqueness of my Self and the expertise of what I have to share. Perfect 👌
Add some summaries to what the videos are about. They are all useful, but I'd much rather go directly to specific topics when I want to learn certain tactics.
Wow thank you so much!
Absolutely fantastic content!
Thanks Carroll
Amazing. It works. Thanks.
Love little Terry as with big terry’s signature stories…so enjoying the possibility of love in this world within us!!!
Can we meet?
Nice explaination. I am a subscriber,.
Fantastic show ladies! Very inspiring; thank you both!
Upward inflection is way too common among young people especially young women.
This is a really cool video.
How did you become a communication expert? I want to be one.
Fantastic video. Really captured the essence of downward inflection. And love your enthusiasm. Keep up the great work!
It's not about being seen as friendly, it's about being seen as weak and irritating. The upward inflection causes hostility and people ignoring or mistreating those who use it because it's extremely irritating and is used usually by those who are stupid, weak and not worth the time. It's not because people view it as friendly.
Yvette Erasmus 🙏
Hi Amy, I appreciate the short highlight format and I imagine it will help you get more views. A link in the description would be useful, saves time scrolling back and then doing a search. I aim to listen when you upload here, after visiting your podcast on www.voiceamerica.com/episode/137172/the-plight-of-the-fishes - unless I missed something there didn't appear to be a way to increase speed. P.S. The hair just looks edgy, and the swim sounds wonderful!
Your hair is so beautiful - color of the mountains behind. So elegant!
"To be right, and to look good." I would replace those with "To feel safe, and to feel valued." For many people, being "wrong" doesn't feel safe - it leads to other abandonment, or self abandonment. Like wise, for many people, to look "weak" doesn't feel safe ie. I need your approval and if I can't have it, I'll just amplify my self approval. Terry is talking about being aware of this in our self and others, and letting down our shield. However, he's not talking about throwing away our shield. We shouldn't expect a high level of safety in all our relationships - but we should expect it in our closest relationships, because if we can't...why have them?
Love your videos!!
WOW, that's amazing, so cool! Very elegant. :)
Much thanks Amy 🤩
Hello Ms Amy, You are so funny!!!! :) This video was very insightful. Thanks a lot for your valuable time!

Awesome! I am so feeling this! Thank you both! I just discovered your channel searching for inflection skills. I was impressed, so I subscribed, and this video popped up! I am looking forward to more.
Is this anecdotal or is there any research which backs this up? For example a study that clusters salespeople into "up talkers" and "downward inflectors" then comparing those two conditions to their quarterly or annual sales figures.
Does there have to be "official stamped research" for you to comprehend (and hear) the benefit to this? What about "anecdotes" do you find non-valuable?
I think that someone forcing themselves to do eight weeks of daily training in order to transform the way they speak should have more than just a story of how little Johnny stopped watching TV when his mom changed the tone of her voice to go on. Consider also that uptalking is more commonly associated with women and some other cultures. Could it be that the suggestion that everyone adopt downward inflection is just sexist and racist? Is this something that just puts a disproportionate burden on women and people from other cultures? Is this something that has a real, measurable real-world impact on sales numbers, or is it just a grifter grifting? Let's also not forget that "Bond, James Bond" is a work of fiction. People do what he says because that's the way the story was written. Peer reviewed research would help separate a real world impact of inflection from a general opinion and personal preference that has no real-world impact. Could there have been factors other than downward inflection that caused Johnny to suddenly pay attention? Peer reviewed research could help separate "cargo cult" from real world impact. To be very clear, I'm not saying this downward inflection thing is not true, but I am pretty sure it's sexist and racist. If we're going to be walking around saying that this sexist and racist thing *IS* true it would be really cool to have more to go on than a single story of this one client whose son listened to her.
@@LGTMshipit I feel like you're the type of person who wouldn't eat an apple unless there weren't 15 studies confirming it was healthy....some things are self evident, not everything, but some things.
Hey Jason. It feels like I've struck a nerve here. I really didn't come here to get personally attacked or engage in a multi-stage flame war. I'm just going to bow out. Goodbye.
@@LGTMshipit reading my words as "attack" or "flame war" is such an escalated perspective and tells me more about YOU than anything else. It's an epidemic today for even a simple question or altered perspective to be twisted into a "flame attack" and its such a sad state of reality
very nice to see you Amy on youtube, and glad many more can enjoy these pills. I have fond memories of your training, and book. It was an eyeopener experience that led me to learn much more about communications, and myself.
Hi Alessandro! Great to hear from you and delighted to know you’re keeping the learning alive! Wish you a great holiday season, Amy
Hello, Thank you very much for this movie about inflection. By watching this movie you will understand the concept of inflection and especially download inflection. Please continue your movies. Great Joh !
Great advice Amy!
