Did a couple auditions for the Series Regular roles on Lioness. Kept tabs on the cast announcements. Was not familiar with Jonah before the booking, but watching him here and on the show, glad he booked the job. Low key and authentic guy.

Also, have you ever come across the following psychology book: “How Emotions Are Made: The Secret Life of the Brain” by Lisa Feldman Barrett. I came across it a year ago, and even though it’s focus is on the psychological study of emotions, I believe it contains a great explanation to why bringing your own reality to the character to the point where you are thinking it is just you on stage or on set will be perceived by the audience in a totally different way. I feel like when I am not convinced that what I do will translate correctly to the audience, I resort to trying to “become” the character rather than bringing the character to me, which hinders me in developing a full sense of self in the particular circumstances of the script. Somewhere in my mind I am aware that I am “playing/acting” and I have a separated true self and a character self. By reading that book I found trust in the fact that I will translate just as intended.

Hey Aaron and Kay, currently watching the episode, I just wanted to comment, how I came across the three questions when I read Uta Hagen’s book. In the chapter about Entrances, she said the same thing. I love how different advice keeps circling around in the industry. I would love to add that all these thoughts and prompts you guys gave as a “moment before” really only come to me, when I successfully particularized and substituted everything in the scene to create my reality where I have a profound sense of self. Since everything I am coming in touch with, will automatically prompt organic thoughts. So all it takes is a shift of focus, as you guys said, to give myself the space for those organic thoughts to come. The three questions are a great gateway to guide my shift.

“Because if you don’t have pain, you can’t be a great artist as an actor. You can maybe be a great artist as a cinematographer, or a director, but you gotta have pain. And the pain and how we, the actors use it..”
