    Ex-banker who lived/working in HK and now lives in Taiwan. I agree that banks suck in Taiwan for all the reasons you put forward and many more. Also the average Taiwanese bank staff hate dealing with foreigners and will outright lie to you just so they can avoid dealing with you. However, I must take issue with something you said around the 2:00 minute mark. Taiwan is well integrated with international banking via SWIFT, and it does require more paperwork for FX transactions including/especially RMB. But these rules around RMB transactions are not any more onerous than those in HK, which has very free banking rules... These rules are required by the PRC Central Banking apparatus- much like Taiwan's Central Bank requires reporting on FX transactions above a certain amount. Both countries do not have freely exchangable currencies, so have extra rules in place. Also, I have not had any problems using internet banking to send money from US/HK to my Taiwan accounts - you just need to have the proper SWIFT codes and account info. But yeah, Taiwan banking generally sucks :)

    Do you think If Taiwan does switch to becoming Bilingual (English speaking), it will lead to a decline in native languages? Like in Singapore and Malaysia.

    • @StartupTaiwan
      @StartupTaiwan 8 місяців тому

      Thanks for this @Benjaminbittle8192 - To answer, not at all. Taiwan is keen in keeping the Traditional Chinese language compared to a version from the big neighbor who uses the simplified version. While the Traditional and Simplified characters seems a direct translation to non-native speakers some nuances can be observed. More importantly, Taiwan's advantage is its expertise of the Mandarin language when it comes to doing business among Chinese-speaking countries, while being a tech hub. Lastly, Harvard's Chinese language program is actually coursed through Taiwan via the National Taiwan University.

    NI HAO, I hope someone can help me . I ABSOLUTELY love Taiwan on every level , if I want to move there but with NO job ...HOWEVER if I were to have $3,000,000 up to $6,000,000 in TWD would I be able to live there ? And who or what government building would I need permission to ask to live there , where do I go ? OR would they approve it from the paperwork knowing I had that much in their bank in their currency knowing that , well to me is Alot is this doable? I would also love to go to class to learn Mandarin Personally, I Don't see a problem with living there, especially with that much money in the bank, I was planning to move to Malaysia but like Malaysia and Thailand it's mandatory you put between $30,000 and $40,000 US dollars in their bank for show 🙄 after so long I think your allowed to take up to $12,000 per year to spend how you like . I'm not sure if for Taiwan, you also need a certain amount in a separate account for show some Asian countries its mandatory I'm also 50 yrs old . That's why NO job😁 Thanks

    Further to the suggestion to identify a designated representative in your U.S. bank, I respectively disagree. I use a well-known national bank for my services. In my decades long relationship with the same bank in Pennsylvania and Florida, I have seen a significant turnover in both personnel between branch offices and personnel in various positions within this national bank. I would not recommend working to obtain a designated bank representative. I have and would suggest having a trusted relative’s name (like a parent), to also be put on to the account, and have your bank statements mailed directly from the U.S. bank to a postal box on Taiwan. Why a postal box? In my sojourn in Taiwan, I have witnessed both a supervisor in Taipei and a landlord in Hsinchu, steal private correspondence from a commercial building’s mailbox and a residential building’s mail box.

    Hi there, thanks for sharing this video. As a quick introduction, I am a 31 year old frenchman who worked in HK for almost 5 years; I recently left my job and am going to move to Taiwan in April, with my Taiwanese wife. I have an entrepreneurial project (or should I say idea, at this stage) in the f&b industry, which I assume is a pretty unusual one for a foreigner to get in. I have (un-formally) pitched my idea to my wife and some of her friends, who at the beginning did not really buy in the idea, but I sort of managed to convince them that it has actually some potential despite the very competitive landscape, and they ultimately recognized it, which gave me some hope in this idea (they are not the kind trying to be nice to me or so) But the thing is, it is crucial to me to get a local “adventurous” partner, and I would tend to believe that it is extremely hard to find, or at least to convince, to start a venture with a foreigner, who has basically no expe in the industry he wants to evolve in, has no prior entrepreneurial expe etc. I was therefore wondering, if there exists any specific forum, event, or platform, that connect foreign and local “future entrepreneurs”, i.e person having ideas but wishing to find a partner. I am completely novice in entrepreneurship and I realize it is very complex to understand where to begin with. Thanks in advance for your tips.

    • @筱瑜潘
      @筱瑜潘 Рік тому

      Oh, and in addition, I was wondering if there is a large number of incubators here in Taiwan, if some are related to f&b, and if they are relatively accessible to foreigners; more generally, if it is difficult to get in etc.

It's also my first time to hear that Taiwan has the goal of becoming a bilingual place in 2030. Although I'm very enthusiastic in learning English and encourage everyone to learn English to broaden their horizons and have more access to information, I don't think it's a good idea for the government to force people to speak English and make it official. It should be a personal choice.

      The company will deduct withholding tax and when you file your taxes in May 2023, the government will reimburse those taxes.

    • @StartupTaiwan
      @StartupTaiwan 2 роки тому

      The reimbursement assumes that you only worked for that company within 2022. If you’ve worked for other companies and worked for total of 6 months and above, the government will taxes from you. Companies here usually take withholding taxes, so check your payslip. I think your worry is that when you show up to file your taxes in May 2023, they’ll ask you to pay up - usually it is not the case as companies take withholding taxes.

    Thank you, Polo. I do understand about the tightness of money flows. If I have a crazed delusional Communist Nation beside me, I'd do the same.

      I saw this thing a few times in front of banks ... always wondered what it was ... it seems like a device from an alternate reality where wincor nixdorf took over our lives instead of smartphones.

    I have had all these issues with the banks. It's difficult to wire my wife money. I even opened an account to wire myself money. I was denied accounts at probably 4 banks before finally getting one. Still having issues with finding mortgage related information. Thanks for the video.

    How do Taiwanese companies receive money from foreign customers? do they have bank accounts abroad for this purpose? I cant imagine that they let their clients suffer through the remittance process ...

    • @StartupTaiwan
      @StartupTaiwan 2 роки тому

      This is one pain point of many businesses, one way to do it is to open branch office abroad who handles the money received from clients abroad. From there, only a portion gets sent back to Taiwan and this process is troublesome because of the paperwork that is involved. If this is a regular client, a contract, plus other documents can be sent to a Taiwan bank, after this is received by a Taiwan bank, they can somehow allow direct transfers - imagine doing this for all your foreign clients.
