Yo!, this was the fix I needed! The blower was a model 51574, gifted to my wife by her late father, so it was really satisfying to get it running again. For me, it was the brushes. Pretty worn down, so I cleaned them and had to file/reshape one. I'm going to track you down and send you $5 or $10, thanks!

How can you fix if the spring is broken?
If you mean the spring within the safety switch, the simplest fix for that would be to replace the safety switch entirely. If you mean one of the springs holding the brush contact, any equivalent spring you can locate should work, OEM may not be needed.
