Reading, Understanding, And Applying A Written Standard-Part 1
Venture back in time with us to a world where standardbred poultry was prized as much for their ability to lay eggs or grace our dinner tables as they were for their feathers. In our latest chat, we lift the veil on the historical tapestry of poultry breed standards, moving beyond the glossy sheen of the exhibition to reveal their profound influence on the breeds we adore today. From the Rhode Island Reds to the industrious Leghorns, we trace the impact of the 1874 American Standard of Perfection and its ripple effect on uniformity and consumer desires, linking it all back to the era of bustling live poultry markets.
We navigate the nuanced dance of breeding to the standards, sharing the wisdom gleaned from years of experience. As we discuss the Rhode Island Reds' early laying prowess and the Leghorns' evolution, we confront the economic choices that shape our feathered friends. We warn of the dangers of "coop blindness" and offer insights into the art of balanced breeding, highlighting strategies that preserve vigor and breed identity. Whether you're a breeder with a passion for heritage or simply curious about the clucking creatures that roam our yards, this episode is an incubator of knowledge, poised to hatch a richer understanding of poultry's past, present, and future.

Mastering Poultry Nutrition and Effective Flock Management with Expert Jeff Mattocks
I look for vigour number one!
Mandelyn has got a good perspective!
I moved out 7 birds this weekend and it feels good! More room for the winners!
Great tips!
So what should you feed them? Is there something you can buy to lower protein and fat?
I just ordered the supplement. I am a new backyard chicken owner, and I look forward to giving my chickens they nutrition they need. I really enjoy the podcasts.
Studies indicate chickens are not susceptible to deleterious prions.
For sure the females give you a great head start buy selecting the great layers, but it would help to use males from females that are proven good layers for breeding.
Chanteclers are bred to be winter hardy, they really do quite well in winter. I have Partridge Chanteclers.
I achieved that when I used time magazine on the bottom of my cages.
My goal for my birds is to be on the cover of time magazine!
The podcast ended abruptly after the comment: "Do you know what the problem is with getting a big tail?" but never answered the question. Can you answer it here?
Laymen's terms genetics book would be any books by Sigrid Van Dort has a poultry color genetics books that is great but also some breed specific books too
Sigrid Van Dort has some nice books on genetics. I have learned a lot from them.
Thank you for your wisdom truly appreciate your help
With temperament, we are discussing nurture vs. nature I know a breeder Kathy hopkins who controls a flock of 200 American buff geese. She's hand raised every single one and perfected their feed. And she controls them. She's taught my 13 yr son to do the same and he can control them very well. It's a very delicate balance. Some breeds are more aggressive by genes. That's a fact and proven science. Fun thoughts No solid answers
I have a line that are crow headed, I crossed them with a exceptional male and got one nice female. The rest will go! Most did not improve.
Thank you Kenny!
If you sail your chickens, you will know if they have a crooked keel. Just kidding, it is a aweful thing to deal with!
I think of the old sailing ships, no refrigeration, so the food animals were kept alive until they were on the menu.
I love Mandy, she is so good about identifying the good and bad of her birds, but she is so human and too busy to write things down. I get that!
Fore sure, if you are going to pullet breeding you need to be careful, make sure they are old enough and laying consistant quality eggs on a regular basis. Funny thing, people have told me if you pullet breed, you get smaller birds. But the biggest bird I ever bred, he was pullet bred and a monster. His type is not the best, so likely I will move him on. But he is a freak.
Keep this up love this ❤❤❤❤❤❤
Thanks for the interesting discussion
Very interesting information. Thanks for sharing.
I am a first time chick owner. I am learning alot from your podcasts.
Upset I missed this live...thank you so much for the information. So much to learn! You are the best teachers....
Thank you so very much for this priceless information
I’m in Australia our chickens mostly moult naturally in autumn. Though sometimes they start in summer. What about chickens that free range? Should they be locked up during the moult? I’m going to give this a go next summer but right now I’m going to try moulting a 2yo hen that’s never moulted and she needs to.
Is molt the American spelling? I’m Australian we spell it moult.
10,000 hours will make you an EGGspert, amirite!
I am.so grateful for the work of Jeff. Learning and implementing as fast I can, including the Nutri- Balancer. Gives me peace of mind to know that I can quickly improve the nutrition profile of my backyard flock. Thank you for hosting this podcast!
Thank you thank you great information God bless each and every one abundantly
It takes a few days to freeze a big bucket of water. I freeze smaller bottles and leave the tops off so the water drips out as it melts. Those only usually take overnight to be frozen solid.
Our chickens here in Australia are just finishing their autumn moult. It's been an unusually long and difficult moult this year for most people and their birds, and some birds are still practically naked in this wintery weather.
Hello from Canada!
Good show!
I am trying to bred quality Partridge Chanteclers, the partridge colour and pattern is a challenge. I feel I am certified crazy, and am committed or should be committed because I won't give up till I have some degree of perfection! That is what makes it exciting!
I started with culls from a very good line. I bred lots of chicks, and lots were culls, but a few showed the better qualities of the good line, those were the keepers. Not that I have a flock of champions, but I feel I am moving forward (slowly).
A Bick lighter? that is funny!
LED have a flicker rate too- and are VERY damaging to the eyes. Please use incandescent
For everyone who likes the idea of Elector Psp- but fell over when they saw the price tag- thank me later - 😆 LOOK INTO - CAPTAIN JACKS DEADBUG BREW CONCENTRATE - it is an organic gardening pest control product. Exactly the same as Elector Psp at a fraction of the cost. Make sure you get the concentrate and make it according to the instructions for regular garden use on the bottle. Works tremendously for lice, mites, AND scaly leg mites! Completely changed the game for me and wish I had known about it YEARS AGO! Would of saved me so much time and energy!
I would really LOVE to see a video on disease resistance. I have seen two schools of thought - 1 being the school you mentioned in this video of true disease resistance is a bird that is exposed and never becomes symptomatic - they kill cull any and all symptomatic birds. The second school says that they bird that is exposed, becomes symptomatic, and then SURVIVES, is worth its weight in gold especially for high mortality diseases because after they recover their DNA is coded with immunity and that immunity is passed on to offspring. That school of thought says we are weakening the species by kill culling all symptomatic birds. I haven't decided on a school yet. But I would be lying if I didn't say that I see logic and value in BOTH philosopies. The latter being the model we use for human immunity. We are exposed, become symptomatic, however slight, and then code immunity. Why do we believe differently for birds?
Can someone explain to me how fixed joints (hips, knees, etc only legs though) happen and how to prevent this? I just had one chick hatch with this myself but I have seen several others have this issue in their incubators. Is it an Incubating issue? Temperature, humidity? Or is it a nutritional thing? Or genetics and /or hereditary? Thanks in advance
I love and appreciate your videos, they are packed full of useful information , but the cat in the background crying and whining really bugs me. I again really appreciate all the great information . GOD BLESS ALL OF YOU.
I have had some luck with mating half sibs. Yes I got some culls but also some really nice birds. I have 5 lines, so I have my own outcrosses (which are still distantly related).
The breeder that I work with, and has many more years experience than me, said that with our breed (Partridge Chanteclers) you will find the smaller hens are better layers. I have found that to be true. The problem is the big birds win at the shows.
Hello from Ontario!
Thank you so much for this very informative video :)
Just want to thank everyone for all the great info y'all give out freely thank you
