I used to live in the area, and I'll never understand why a 5000 sq ft home would have 5 bedrooms but only 3 baths.

I had a Times Useless Paper Route when I was 12 and delivered the paper in all kinds of weather with Snow sometimes up to my waist... Back then, the City Crews in their Big Green MACK Dump Trucks with huge plows did a really fantastic job of clearing all the main streets which made it possible for the Useless to drop the papers off at the Corner of Homestead and Western ave. and clear the regular streets in 24 hours.. When I was about 3 or 4 the Snow was so deep, it was piled high halfway up our Stoop at our house at Second & Frisbee which is no longer there. I watched while sitting on my Grandfathers Knee out the Window Three of these big HUGE ORANGE MONSTERS rumbling loudly coming down the street. It was an Airport Runway Snow Blower with two Plows behind it. What Happened.. Well from what I remember reading in the Useless was that Mayor Corning decided he was NOT GOING TO PAY CITY WORKERS OVER TIME to come out and plow the snow as an EXCUSE to hire PRIVATE COMPANIES trying to make himself look a Hero by allegedly saving taxpayers dollars which he was not known for, (don't get me going about him I have some real and true rotten nasty stories about him and his antics and Uncle Dan too) but probably really meaning more campaign contributions.. In my Opinion that started it all. Homestead went up to 4 days not seeing a Plow and they were using the typical Pickup truck with no weight behind it and having trouble especially without Chains which were Banned.. I can still hear the Clang of the chains on the City Buses on Western ave when they were covered in Cobble Stone and were very durable. The Chains ripped up the Asphalt is why they were banned. A lot of the Cobble Stone disappeared never to be seen again for some reason. The current Mayor and Politicians should find it really embarrassing and hang their heads in shame for after some 200 Plus years of Snow they still find it incapable of doing a good job in removing the Snow as seen in the Video... My last Snow storm before I escaped the City that Spring was working at Albany Med and being SNOWED IN and dozens of Nurses and Doctors and other staff unable to get to work or to leave work so like the hero's they were, they stayed overnight and far into the next day to take care of the Patients.... At that time I lived in an Studio Apartment on State St. One of the old Brownstones, and was told by the building Super my apartment was originally part of the original State Capitol and it was Teddy Roosevelts waiting room for visiting dignitaries. I walked through knee high Snow while crossing the Park to get to work on the "B" Shift and It was Beautiful sight on the way home especially if nobody had been there before me.... I do miss it sometimes. San Diego weather was boring after 31 years of not much else for sunshine and fog and rain once or twice a year...

Wow, that entire section up to the Palace Theater was unrecognizable to me. But that block just before the Theater was where my Great, Great, Grandmother lived in the 30's - 50's after moving from Brooklyn and is written about in the Book "The Crazy Ladies of Pearl Street" by Treveon(sp) and I know who the crazy ladies were. I saw the Rolling Stones for $5.00 at the Palace Theater and thought they STUNK... My Garage Band played their songs better than they did... I had 7 Cousins who went to St. Joesph's and 4 more who went to I think PS #1 or 2 not sure. They all lived in the Brick Tenaments on one Block a few blocks up... I'm going to have to call them and tell them their old homes still exist.. Our entire family escaped from Albany in the 70's due to the poor job situation and poor salaries that were being paid.. Most of us did so well we for the most part all Retired by 55 years of age. I retired at 52 and am my mid 70's now. Thanks for sharing....

So many memories, so many.... From Engine 1 West 90% of it remains the same until Brevador. The State Campus use to be wild woods except for a Golf course. with real Indian Trails going through it that were used for Hundreds of years leading from one water source to another. I harvested my 1st Deer there... Picked tons of Blueberries... I watched 85 being built with over 30 Euclid Scrapers removing the soil... as I said so many memories... I watched the State Police Headquarters being built. The Cellar goes down over 300 feet which was supposed to be the Governors Bomb Shelter.

If you visit the CROWN POINT PARK it was originally a 500 hundred Cow Dairy Farm owned by my Dad's Uncle until he found some relics from the Revolutionary War and was forced to sell it.. We spent a couple of summers there in the Cabins he had built for Vacation Rentals on the Lake... The Milk of his Cows went to BORDEN's and ELSIE the Cow one was of his cow which was picked out in a Contest......

Nothing much has changed here. My Great Grandfather was a Firemen at the first fire house on the left in about 1890 - 1905 when the fire trucks were drawn by Horses..His son was a fireman at the next Firehouse on the Hook and Ladder until he transferred to Delaware ave... I find it amazing how little the City has changed or progressed in the 70 plus years I have lived.....Clinton ave. residents were always a problem even rioting in the 60's which got them absolutely nothing at all.... Thanks for sharing......

I worked there from 1973 to 1975 on the Orthopedics Ward with a wonderful group of Nurses... I am told the Administration is not anything like what we had back then.. Still fighting paying the staff a decent wage while stuffing their own bulging pockets.... I was born there as were 41 members of my family as you passed the Main Entrance the OB ward where were were born was right above the Entrance way...... IF it were not for the Government, Hospitals, and Colleges the city would be another Detroit with similar Politicians...That park on the Corner was our hangout as Teenagers as we sat around that Monument drinking Beer until the we hours of the Morning. Thanks for the Memories....

I'm in my mid 70's now and nothing really has changed much other fast food dumps but for the most part it is all still there.. I did escape Albany in 1968 and again in 1975 and came back for a visit maybe 20 years ago.. Nope, I really do not miss it. My old friends were sitting at the same old Bar still complaining about the Government etc. etc. whereas by escaping I retired 20 years before they did.....
