Swiss National Team - 2024 FAI World Drone Racing Championship in Hangzhou, China
Drone Racing (F9U) | World Championship 2024 in Hangzhou, China
From October 30 to November 3, 2024, the Drone Racing (F9U) World Championships took place in Hangzhou, China. 30 nations sent their best pilots, a total of 107 participants who fought for the coveted podium places over four intensive days. Despite the disruption caused by the remnants of Typhoon Kong-Rey, which paralyzed racing for a day, the mood in the pilot camp and in the Swiss team remained unbrokenly positive.
Three of our pilots - Marvin, Björn and Cyril - qualified for the elimination rounds with excellent lap times. Unfortunately, Florian narrowly missed out on a ticket with 98th place.
Due to the weather-related delay, the organizer decided to start the elimination rounds on the same day. Our Swiss pilots started their heats in the late evening.
Björn and Cyril started well, but then had to move into the loser bracket after the first heat. For Björn, the tournament ended in the next heat, despite his excellent performance in the qualification. He finished 54th, but was not satisfied: "I expected more," he commented. Cyril, on the other hand, fought his way through to the next round. Marvin won his heats confidently and steadily climbed up the elimination bracket.
On the final day, Cyril and Marvin showed their skills once again. Cyril won his first heat in the loser bracket convincingly, but was eliminated in the next. He finished the World Championship in an excellent 32nd place overall and 20th place in the juniors category.
Marvin, on the other hand, faced three strong Korean competitors. Despite an impressive performance, he had to admit defeat to Kim MinChan and Kim Min Jee and move to the loser bracket. Things were going well for Marvin there until he lost his video image in race 53 and crashed unluckily. With 16th place in the overall ranking and 11th place in the juniors category, he impressively confirmed his place among the world's best drone racing athletes.

Hashimoto Yuki (JAP) won the world championship title ahead of Bai Xizr (CHN) and Kim MinJae (KOR).
The Swiss team reached 8th place out of 30 nations in the team rankings. Team manager Kevin Rychen was extremely satisfied: "As a team, we are more than satisfied. Never before has a Swiss drone racing team been so successful at the World Championships."
New friendships were made and existing ones deepened. The experiences in Hangzhou will remain in the memories of all participants for a long time, not only because of the sporting achievements, but also because of the many valuable encounters.
The Swiss team looks back with pride on this successful World Championship and thanks the Swiss Model Flying Association (SMV ) and all sponsors ( Composites Busch SA, Porrentury ; redPoint AG, Baar and AVM Engineering AG, Dietfurt ) for their generous support, which made this success possible.
