I thought nics are counted as a fault??
a more youthful appearance and a shorter stronger back and... What? I tried to understand but I don't.
A couple of negative comments here, but in my opinion, a HUS class should be used to get a horse more accustomed to showing, being positive in the ring, picking up and maintaining true gaits, balance and leads with rhythm, softness and cadence before it is asked to go over rails or hedges. If the horse can carry itself in the ring relaxed on the flat, and in light contact with its head lower than one would want for real hunting or in over fences, without resistance, then once the energy is added for the over fences or in the open, the horse should be, by the time it has proven to be a handy and steady HUS, able to pick its head up and go more forward without the rider needing to yank and hang in the mouth like we see a lot of jumpers (cc and in arena). Having a horse that is willing and soft before the job is crucial for willing handling and helping maintain the horse’s top line from a standpoint of longevity. Hollowed out horses have more muscular and skeletal issues as they age, so getting them thinking long and low before the excitement is a must. The thought behind it in my opinion is a lot like patterning a barrel or pole horse at the walk trot and lope BEFORE asking for the speed, so the horse doesn’t lose its mind once it’s asked to go fast.
Thanks so much, this was great!
Dude it a year wtf i never saw no like no comments no dislike lol 😂😂😂
why aren’t the horses with their noses dragging on the ground docked points for not “maintaining a level topline”?
Interesting video but the main thing a horse needs is good feet --for if a horse has everything presented as ideal in this video and has terrible feet --what good is the horse? The second thing a horse needs is SPEED-speed to catch a calf. What is wrong with show horses is the fact that the Quarter Horse industry has differentiated to 4 types of horses--1 show horses, 2 race horses , 3 cutting horses, and 4 all around horses. The main thing I do not like about this differentiation is the fact that the show horse (or the type the judges select) can not run fast enough to catch a calf or to head a cow--all they do is look pretty.
Very interesting and informative. Thank you for sharing.
Thanks!
Hi Kathy , thank you for perfect presentation of the rules. It helps me a lot.
Thank you so much for this!!!

Oh my gosh, halter horses look so weird..
What’s the correct lead for a lope?
So why are the judges placing and reward the horses that do not even perform these simple gates at the breed shows? None of them can walk, non of them are truly jogging and none can lope. And they cannot back very well either.
well every judge judges differently though
I would agree, you do have to realize that the horses might have a better gate, you just need to look closely.
Things can be over looked in a class full of horses that can’t move freely.
@@claradesouza6454 They all stand out …none of them can perform the gaits. It is how do you place when all the entries are awful.
Decades ago I was told that a virtue carried to excess becomes a fault - your job as a breeder is to know when to say when and not follow the crowd breeding for faults they have been told are virtues.. Every horse you praised in this video is an example of virtues carried to excess. They are useless, unsound animals with fashionable points that are actually faults. They are so overdone and extreme they are actually unattractive. I'd hate to have to throw a saddle on any of them and head down the trail for the day. Virtues - Faults. Learn the difference.
You don't have any fear..mam
Awesome mam....
Thank you
Are these penalties occurred per stride or just a one time deal?
The penalties are per manuever
Pretty is as pretty does. The final test is whether they can do what they are bred for. This kind of analysis is quite naive when looked at from this point of view. For example these horses are not suitable for classical dressage because they are all built down hill, on the forehand and impossible to collect properly.
That's because they are stock horses, which are not supposed to have the same characteristics as a dressage/event horse.
thanks for sharing . its really help me to judge a horse . well done
This is weeeeeirrrrrdddd.....
Thanks for the awesome video it was very helpful!!
Are you looking at the same horses we are seeing in this video?? both are terrible! the one on the right is either photoshopped or grossly obese!! its legs are the worse Ive ever seen!! how can you say its well defined muscle?? Im glad you don't judge any classes I will ever be in Goodness gracious me!!!!
When comparing the second set of horses, the "braided mane mare" is actually a "braided mane GELDING" You simply missed the shealth. 😊
Sheath I guess!
the horse on the right is ugly. in general. Perhaps it's just the breed you are looking at but I personally do not think the horse on the right is pleasing to the eyes. The muscles are too defined, and the legs beneath her look way too small to be able to hold her upper girth. The horses face is also unpleasant. It's too short, again, this could just be the breed's preference- but if it is- then this breed would not do well in a multi breed show... The neck as well- is extremely too long. It's not something you are used to seeing in horses- especially working horses who tend to have short bull necks or necks like the horse on the left. The horse on the left- yes isn't balanced, but it is much more pleasing to the common eye than the horse on the right. Again, this is just my own preference in horses- but I can understand at what you're trying to get at. You're looking for balance in the horse's look- good muscling along the horse's legs- shoulders and rear, making sure it isn't fat and so on.
Trust me this is NOT the standard of the breed in all disciplines besides “halter” which ironically originated as a class which shows off the best conformation of the breed.
Inasmuch as a real hunter should be looking ahead of itself for whatever obstacles it is going to encounter, why isn't the neck at a normal (approx.) 45 degree angle instead of drooping down? ( That droopy headset makes the horse look exhausted or sick, or aenemic or intimidated - or all of the above.) Any slight unevenness of ground and that horse would go to its knees, and the rider, perched so precariously atop the saddle, would have no hope of not becoming a lawn dart. The big tail with its hair extensions gets awkwardly wrapped around the hind legs like a too voluminous skirt, and would come home loaded with burrs on a real hunt. Can these horses jump? Or, with their droopy headset, would they simply shuffle up to and right *through* the obstacle. The HUS is a sad example of turning a useful horse engaged in a *real* activity into something utterly fake, the Japanese Tea Ceremony of the horse show world. :oP
The bay mare on 15:17 has a very mustangy body type. I honestly wouldn't be suprised if there is a freezebrand under that mane lol.
I got a big cock,12 inches
oh gawd those legs
Horses that move like this with their heads so low and so heavy on the forehand would not do well "following hounds".
That horse towards the end is actually A Certain Vino, not Harley D Zip. But this is a very informative and video. Thank you.
I think you need to read the halter judging manual provided on the AQHA website.
Thanks soooooo much!! This helped me alot. We have an FFA horse judging tomorrow, thanks again!! 👍🐴
Same!
I have been judging horses and the legs on that horse are horrible they look like they should belong to a chicken
Christ the legs on these horses that you like are just godawful. Could never to stand up to the rigors of riding. Halter is really so, so disturbed.
Thank god I came across this now. I will be showing for my very first time this summer!
Thank you so much! This is a great video! Things are VERY well worded!!! I have a HS FFA horse judging team with various levels of experience and this was great!!!
bull crap on head carriage. Its a dream. every horse at congress still carries its head with the ears below the withers! And they win
The black horse is A Certain Vino... hot Harley D Zip, who is a bay.
Thanks so much for this terrific video. Our 4h horse project used it tonight at our meeting.
I would like to show under you! I get sick of the old school judges that will place peanut rollers and "tropers" over proper movers!
Thats a certain vino, not harley d zip!
I agree with everything you said about head set however here in ohio, judges are placing the lower the head the better! I wish it would go back to your explanation
Thank you SO MUCH for this video! I've been studying everything I can find online for my 4-H horse judging finals to qualify for state, and this video sums up everything I've read perfectly in a visual way to "cement" it in my mind.
VERY helpful!! This is my first year showing western pleasure and i didnt know all of this information, i was just doing what people told me LOL now i can educate myself
Thanks, If they just walk a bit it is just fine, with no deduction in the maneuver score and no penalty.
I have a question.... For example, after a horse is done spinning, pauses and is being asked to go into a large fast circle, sometimes I see them walking a few strides before taking off in the large circle. Is this considered okay, or is there a small point penalty that occurs? Great Presentation, thank you!
You can walk a few strides!
VERY helpful for my horse judging competition in April :D
Great video!
