Winter hiking at the Observation Point Trail in Zion National Park alone
A day after hiking the iconic Angels Landing, I decided to check out the Observation Point Trail via the East Mesa Trail to look at the Valley from the other (east) side. There were some snow precipitation today, which made the hike even more enjoyable. Tip: The drive to East Mesa/Observation Point trailhead involves some treacherous road conditions (muddy and icy), so a vehicle with high clearance and 4WD is strongly recommended, if not required.

Angels Landing winter hike in Zion National Park, Utah
Переглядів 3,5 тис.3 роки тому
Finally was able to make a trip to Zion National Park and hike the coveted Angels Landing. It was a beautiful winter day (Mid-December) with temperature in the low 40's (F). Strongly recommend bringing actual spiked crampons for the icy sections of the trail (not the "spike-free" ones, I saw many hikers using them, but struggled a bit because they are not very effective).

Fourth attempt at the Japanese Soufflé (Jiggly) Cheesecake. This was way harder than what I had imagined because I can't seem to get the perfect cook temp and time. But it definitely looks better each time!

Hiking the 40 miles Trans Catalina Trail Alone
I look at the Syncro 20 as the Talon 22 but with the Airspeed back panel. I think Osprey should market this more than just a biking backpack.
Excellent review, I was looking at the Manta 24 but that pack looks too big to use as an everyday bag. I feel this pack would be excellent for everyday use, hiking, and travel. I love the front stretch pocket and the water bottle pockets can hold a 32oz Nalgene which is really cool. Thank you for the great review!
For some reason, this video doesn't look as vertigo-inducing as all of the others of Angel's Landing that I've seen.
For those afraid of heights, is it a (bit) less frightening because when you look across to your right you see another sheer rock face, rather than open sky?
Nice review, thanks!!
Hi ! Im women , is this packback also used my females? ….
Hi, even though it is marketed as Men's, I believe it's probably compatible as well. The only concern I would have is probably the chest strap...but you definitely should try it out in person before you purchase it!
Thank you so much for your patience making this video. Beautiful 💚
Did this hike last April....Can't wait to do it again....Did you get a pass..lottery...to avoid bottlenecking...crowds..???
Thank you Yosef for this beautiful video❤️❤️❤️ We also want to hike to the observation point this year. But we don't know where to park our car. Where did you park your car? Greetings from Germany
Hello, thank you for your comment! I parked at the East Mesa Trailhead www.google.com/maps/place/East+Mesa+Trailhead%2FObservation+Point+Trailhead/@37.2971568,-112.9029037,17.41z/data=!4m15!1m9!3m8!1s0x0:0xa67dd38e3f410c2b!2sZion+Ponderosa+Ranch+Resort!5m2!4m1!1i2!8m2!3d37.2700106!4d-112.8756883!3m4!1s0x80cac6b429039409:0x453429d08abd6349!8m2!3d37.2969851!4d-112.900139 However, I would caution you if you plan to hike during the winter months you would need an off-road capable vehicle (high clearance with 4x4) because the roads leading up to the trailhead can be extremely muddy and icy. Otherwise, a safe bet is to contact Zion Ponderosa Ranch Resort ( www.zionponderosa.com/ ) and arrange a transportation service with them. There are also other ways to get to Observation Point (via Weeping Rock or East Rim Trail). Make sure to check the status of the trail ( www.nps.gov/zion/index.htm ) before you head out!
@@yoseftravels8043 Thanks Yosef👍😊
Nice video and have a question about traction and hike difficulty. I bought coil traction had conditions similar or a little more snow than yours. Traction was fine up to the chains. Going up chains, scary but ok. Then there was s gap in chains with a rocky slope. I got scared. Metal on rock and no chain. Continued until false summit and stopped. Do you have any concern with you spikes on rock ledge? Also, the section beyond where I stopped, any similar sections to what stopped me?
Hi thanks for your comment! I thought the spikes I used was more than sufficient for the condition on the day I hiked. But I personally would not try to attempt if my equipment were anything less. I think you absolutely made a prudent judgment by not going any further with just the coiled traction. Sounds like you were aware of your limitations and that was an intelligent decision. Hope this helps!
Amazing hike! You look like you have done this one 1000 times. Kudos to you Yosef!
Great video, that hike is amazing isn’t it!
Yes it was!
Do you need a permit to hike this trail?
During the winter?
Hello, thank you for your question! Please refer to the following page from national park services: www.nps.gov/zion/planyourvisit/angels-landing-hiking-permits.htm
Did you need a permit to hike the trail?
Not yet! That’s staring on arpil 2022
Do you hike alone? The video shot, do you need "go and back" to take your camera or recording device?
Just to clarify, you did not need to take the zion shuttle to the angels landing trailhead correct? You could just drive right up because shuttles aren’t running currently?
Hey! When I was there the shuttle were not in service due to their scheduled time off. It was back in service from 12/23 to 1/1. However, I do see on the Zion website that it's not in service again from 1/2 until February. I think you can always call them to check, if you don't get a park ranger, try contacting the zion lodge or other local hotel/business (zion outfitter, etc.), they would have a better idea!
Thank you so much for sharing your adventure with us Yosef. I really enjoyed your video while having my coffee. I started to record hiking videos my own, so I know how hard it is and I really appreciate the creativty and effort you put in, well done! Keep up the good work, so looking forward to your next film. All the best for you. Mario
Hey Mario, I appreciate your comment! Thank you and good luck on your film making as well!
@@yoseftravels8043 thanks a lot Yosef.
I broke my sternum strap twice now. once I stood on it, once it broke whilst adjusting. Both times osprey sent a new one out to me free of charge, they say they will do this with most of the hardware on their bags. Nice.
Wow, that's interesting. Good thing, mine is still intact. That's good to know that they are willing to send you one free of charge! Excellent customer service on their end! Thank you for sharing!
Nice video! So much packed into the footage, excellent footage work.
no hydrate?
It does have it, I just happen to buy the version without it, because I wanted the 3L reservoir instead!
So beautiful view. Thanks my friend
Thank you my friend!
That shot with all those boats is really something mate👊👊👍!!
Thank you! Cheers!
Looks nice 👌
Thank you so much!!
Thank u a lot
Thanks! I wanted to adjust the side of the tubing, but the connection of the tube was so tight I wasn't sure whether it was detachable or not. After watching your video I found the courage to just use some force and detach the tube :)
Nice
Does the sunglass/non-scratch pocket fit a phone? I know that the smaller version doesn't. Please help and thanks!
Hi yes, it should fit. I have a regular iphone X and there is plenty of room for my phone.
i like to wach the review it is nice i want to like but this video is not filmed very well so i will give u a unlike sorry =(
Lol, no problem brother. This was my first attempt at a review. Your unlike will motivate me to do better quality videos next time. Appreciate the honest feedback!
I stopped watching because the volume of the music was to high in my experience. Will get the backpack though✌🏻😁
Thank you for the feedback. Will be more cognizant next time!
👍🏻😉
What is the song ID anyway?! I like it!
Thanks !
This is just a copy of the raptor series I got the 18 litre in that model I've had mine 10 years.
Thanks for that review, very useful as I have just bought one and found the instructions quite limited. Your delivery has a nice pace and is not patronising. Thanks from Glasgow, Scotland
Thank you for the intel on this pack. It was helpful in my decision to purchase it. 👍
So how did this bag hold up after you used it ???
Hi, I found it to be an excellent choice! I use it mostly for my daily commute of about a 15 min ride. I do extended rides 2-3 hours mostly on the weekends. For either use, it holds up really well. The water reservoir really comes in handy. I have the 3 liter one and it is more than enough. After the extended ride, I only found myself using maybe 1.5 liters of water...but I guess that depends on your personal need and the temperature of the day. So far its been holding up to my everyday light to moderate use (I don't do any heavy duty things like Mountain Biking, so the bag really doesn't take too much of a beating). The ventilation system in the back really helped as I don't find myself heating up too much anymore. Overall, I think it's super comfortable for either a day trip or a few hours of riding on your bicycle. Just be mindful of its carrying capacity as it is design only to hold so much stuff! The only thing of concern is that the belt pouches are a bit harder to access while riding because it sits closer to the bag than to the center of my waist, so if your arms are not super flexible (like mine) you can only take stuff in and out of it when you turn your backpack to the side or take it off completely. Other than that, I'd say it's a 10/10 solid purchase!
Thanks for the response! I already ordered it should be here soon. I bought a bike and wanted a pack for my rides. The vented back seem useful so I'm happy to hear it works well. I don't plan on filling to much or taking it out for more then a day so it should be perfect!! Lol I'll probably have the same problem reaching those side pockets so I'll start stretching now. Thanks for the review Yosif!
Thanks for the review! Do you thing it will be great as a hiking/climbing bag?
Hi, yes, this will be a great hiking and climbing bag. The standard water reservoir that it comes with is about 2.5 Liters but I put a 3.0 L reservoir in there and it fits just fine...this would be perfect size for a day hike/climb trip!
Thank you for a good review! Do you think this backpack would perform as a everyday carry bag? I mean with a laptop and all the gears you bring back and forth from work? Would the laptop survive laying towards the backpanel or is it to curved due to the airpeed, causing to much bending on the laptop?
Hi, thanks for your comment. I think a thin 13" laptop would fit into this backpack, anything more than that would be testing its limit. The curved back may not be so much of an issue as the lack of padding in the backwall. You do have the space created by the airspeed ventilation, however I would not trust it to hold up the weight of the laptop if dropped onto the floor. If you are careful with how you carry the bag, then it should handle the job. I would suggest adding a layer of cushion either in the water reservoir section (in that case you would probably forgo the reservoir all together) or if you will use the water reservoir, encase your laptop in a cushioned shell of some sort. Be cautious, though, that once you fill up the water reservoir there is not much room to play with in the main storage compartment. I would even advise against putting a laptop in if you have the water reservoir filled because of the risk that it could bend your laptop. Also, once your put the laptop into the backpack, you also have limited space for other stuff...I guess it all depend on what you are bringing day in and day out for work. If you live near a REI or a cycling store, they should have one in stock and you can bring your laptop to test it out prior to purchase. Hope this helps and good luck!
Tahoe!
First!
Can't wait to do that Trail one day! Maybe get some footage for my channel. Thanks for sharing!
It was an awesome hike. Definitely one for the bucket list. Thank you!
