"We"-The white family/employer "Her"-The domestic worker "Its purpose served, its life done"- The white family is done with the clothing item, indicates their privilege and wealth, they can give it away when they are bored with it. "She put it on with exclamations"-Excited "Her eyes SHone, SHe called and cried"- "Sh" sound is referring to the shushing about Apartheid "The great bulk of her pirouetted" "Great bulk"- Indicating she is a bigger woman "Pirouetted" - To spin, further showing her joy. "She called out blessings on her native tongue" -She is thankful, and speaks a different language than the family she works for. "The Strangers and passers-by" She even shows off to random people passing by. "To all the continent of Africa"-Hyperbole, she can't REALLY show everyone in Africa, emphasis of her joy. "In this intolerable joy"- OXYMORON, Intolerable means you can't stand it, making this joy have a negative connotation. Refers to apartheid, "Intolerable", referring to black people who were discriminated against, and "Joy", the white people in power. "And so for nothing"- Sense of anger. She is loyal to the family, and all they could give her is a discardment. Also referring to nothing came out of Apartheid. "Is purchased by loyalty and trust"-The family tries to buy her loyalty and trust by giving her a garment, worth nothing. "And the unquestioning obedience" -The domestic does everything that her employer asks of her, without question. "Of the Earth's most rare simplicity" - It is rare to find someone so loyal and trusting, yet so simple to be done. "So for nothing"-The domestic worker does all of this but gets nothing in return "The destruction of a world" - The domestic worker represents the black people in Apartheid, their world under destruction.
