Walton Institute is a cornerstone of ICT research and development in Ireland since 1996. Based in the idyllic setting of WIT’s West Campus at Carriganore, Walton Institute undertakes cutting edge research blending fundamental science with real world commercial applications.
Formerly known as the Telecommunications Software & Systems Group (TSSG), the aim of the is to investigate futuristic next-generation technologies, to verify their capabilities and applicability for today’s society, and to work in collaboration with industry to ensure their commercialisation. It encourages inter-disciplinary research with national and international reputation and competitiveness. The Institute is named after the renowned physicist and Nobel laureate, Dr. Ernest Walton. Born in Co. Waterford, Dr. Walton dedicated his life to academia receiving numerous prizes for excellence in physics and mathematics and, most notably, the Nobel Prize in physics in 1951 for being the first to split the atom.

The Yarning Connections project - next steps

The Yarning Connections project led by Walton Institute in collaboration with Jacqui Kelleher, crochet designer, and Caroline O'Toole, knitting designer, and supported by Science Foundation Ireland's Discover programme, explores electronic textiles with conductive yarn in knit and crochet. Next the project requires 25 knitters and 25 crocheters to pattern test. Stay tuned for more details.
