Morrisons Jig (double) learner and full speed versions
This is on of those iconic Irish jigs that you’ll hear being played in many sessions.
There are more versions than I could begin to tell you about, which is a good thing!
This version should make it easy for you to be able to tackle any others that you will come across.
00:00 intro
00:46 learner version (learn this first!)
02:52 fast version you might need to slow this down if you’re trying to learn I properly)

The Milltimber (Scottish double jig) played on the violin/fiddle

One of my favourite tunes. I believe that it was originally written for a workshop being held in the Glasgow area. This is a slightly more advanced version that brings across some interesting techniques in the B part. 00:00 Intro 00:14 Learner version 01:30 Session version Have fun!

A not so well known double jig that deserves a lot more attention, in my opinion! 00:00 intro 00:23 learner version - do this first! 02:02 session version - let’s get it moving! Enjoy 🎻
The Silver Spire (reel) played on the fiddle/violin
Переглядів 2503 місяці тому
One of my favourite reels! Not to be confused with the more well known ‘Silver Spear’, which is also a great tune. 00:31 Intro 02:12 Session version (fast!) you can always slow this down to hear all of the notes. Apologies but apparently I was in a hurry! 🎻 Many thanks to Jenny T for filming today!
La Bruxa - traditional Galician played on the violin/fiddle

Here is a simple and unadorned version of this beautiful tune from Galicia, found on the north west coast of Spain. There is much that I could write about this stunning region, so I will keep it short! For those of you who don’t know, they are very much their own people with their own language and culture. They share many of their roots with Ireland and other Celtic/Gaelic cultures. 🎻 Ps. La Br...

A classic session tune that presents well in either/both C major A minor. It also works well in 16 or 32 bar formats (for dances) 00:00 Intro 00:21 learner version 01:15 session version I hope you enjoy learning and playing this jig! 🎻
Autumn Leaves (Nat King Cole)
Переглядів 3364 місяці тому
Here is something a little different! A simple unadorned version of this jazz composition penned by the famous Nat King Cole. This version was bought to me by one of my students, who found it handwritten (on sheet music) online somewhere. Therefore I know not whose version this is! Either way, I hope that you enjoy listening to and learning it. 🎻🎶
The Lilting Banshee (Double jig) on the fiddle/violin
Переглядів 3044 місяці тому
A version (there are many) of this lovely double jig. 00:00 Intro 00:22 Learner version 02:02 Session version By popular request, I have added two versions, one for learning the notes/bowing and the other for bringing up to speed. For this take, I chose to remain on the E string in the 5th bar and starting the repeat and phrase from the open E so that it flows more. You can, of course start bot...

This is a quick demonstration of how two very closely related scales can actually sound, and subsequently feel very different. This exercise is best used with Crested Hens, by Gilles Chabenat
Lord Mayo (Irish march) played on the fiddle
Переглядів 2386 місяців тому
This fantastic tune was written by David Murphy. Here I have pared it back to give you the basics of how to play it (follow the bowing carefully once you have the tune) properly on the violin. Also I have provided a more upbeat version so that you can hear how it translates into a performance piece. I hope that you enjoy this and that it helps! 🎻💪🏼

You're a godsend to me!
Thank you, happy to help!
A lovely tune and very nicely played!
A lovely jig and very nicely played!
Not to be confused with the lesser-known modern tune "The Geese chasing the tourists out of the park"

Beautifully played!
That's beautiful Matt😊
Enjoy to play your fav song, I am in the same boat with you. I started taking violin lessons the first week of my retirement years for 6 years, my violin teacher thought I am too old to learn but after a couple years to my surprise, he said " You may play in front of your friends " even he accompanied my redemption with a piano (concerto) which made him more surprise without any glitches. Day one, I told him, I choose the songs not you because I won't get bored to practice. At this moment, I play by ear, as the audience won't notice the mistakes anyway.
Beautifully played!
Gorgeoes! and so is the tune ;)
Very nicely played!
Beautiful!
Thanks for all of the instructional videos you've produced. It's a great help to so many of out in ITM land.
@@pauloconnor6331 thanks Paul, I will do my best to keep the tunes coming, in both formats! 💪🏼🎻🎶
Great exercise - I've been looking for exercises similar to this. Thanks,
Nicely played Matt. The tune is originally Scottish. "The Flaggon Reel". 😉
Ahh I think that I learnt it a long time ago (30 years!) from O’ Neill’s 1001 Irish Dance tunes. I can’t keep up with it all, I do try mind 🤣🎻
Thank you for posting this marvelous video. I have learned how to play Hector the Hero now, thanks to you!
Thank you! I guess that I should do a non-learner version soon 🎻
nicely done! thank you!
Hi Matt, Great videos, do you recommend treble bowing up/down/up. And should it be wrist and fingers or is the forearm involved. Thank you
Hi John, thank you! I learnt to play trebles, UDU and that is where my comfort zone is when playing tunes. Ideally, if you’re inclined towards pushing the bar much higher with trebles, then you’d want learn them DUD as well, just for versatility. As for how, my approach starts with pressing the bow into the string, mostly using the right hand index finger, so that the hair grips the string. Play two very short bows (grip) followed by a longer bow that gets you to the next note/beat of the tune. It’s not a perfect explanation, but I hope that it helps!
Love it thank you
Very nice!
Played beautifully! Great reel.
I have been learning this tune, thank god no one has heard me.
Fantastic 😂
Nice Tutorial will learn this one with you methinks-Thanks
Just discovered your videos. Thank you.
Super
scottish reel. fiddle reel music is indigenous to scotland. many, many irish reels are actually scottish.
Hi Bruce, you're not wrong! Reels (ril) were originally bought to Scotland from mainland Europe, as the 'Quadrille', just as much as jigs were orignally 'Gigues'. The Slip jig is notable as being the only true dance form to originate from Ireland (as far as current knowledge allows), and nowhere else. A lot of imports happening with music!!
reels come from the scandinavia word ryl..to stagger. jigs are of english origins. but reel dance and music are scottish. fiddle reels/music are indigenous to scotland. there were many scottish composers of note in scotland. type in .........the jig dance tradition: five centuries old and still counting.......then.........jig | irish, reel & hornpipe | btitannica.......then......music essays | traditional irish- ireland.......then......irish traditional music-feature ask about ireland.......
@@brucecollins641 yep, the Quadrille (4 part reel) is Scandinavian, but probably older in origin. Reels are Scottish, but the form (dance), is older and from elsewhere. Like everything else in life.
Ps. This is not me arguing with you, I’ve done my homework and draw from sound (not the internet/wikipedia) research.

Lovely!
Thank you for this!! So helpful in learning this tune by ear.
Thank you!
This is good, and useful for learners. The reel is a good one, and the tempo (initially) is very encouraging for learners. Later, up to speed, it's a good performance. If you want to learn how to play a reel like this, can be trusted and is helpful. I liked it. 🎻
A beautiful piece. It reminds me The Banshees of Inisherin. I love that movie and Brendan Gleeson playing the fiddle seems to be very good too.
Magnificent!
Thank you!!
Great timing, I'm just learning this one. Thank you.
Thanks for the ievan polka 👍 And while doing Finnish tunes it would be nice to get your version of Emma's waltz 🙏
Thanks! I will see what I can do. Is there a particular setting/version that you'd like to hear?
Thank you Matt 👍

Thanks Bruce, I’ve updated the description. 👍🏼 I’m often in a hurry to record and upload tunes for my students (I’m crazy busy sometimes), and that can leave me slightly neglectful of important details!
Very nice. Key A Dorrian?
Yes, absolutely!
Sounds so cool!!
Thank you!
you created epic ~ have a good one~
