I've spent very little time birding in December but a lot of time processing RAW files using DxO Photolab 8. In this video I've also had a go at talking to camera, demonstrating on screen and videoing myself explaining some of the camera settings. These are clearly a work in progress.
As I've now had the Nikon P950 for 2 years it seemed a good time to do a review.

I've spent a bit of time learning the basics of editing RAW files using Darktable. This video contains a lot more pictures than usual where I show the original JPG file and reveal what I hope is an improved image after editing the RAW file. I also inadvertently took some footage on the DJI Osmo Pocket 3 in DLog M and HLG colour profiles. I've shown my first attempts at colour grading these videos.

I visited Thursley National Nature Reserve on 3 occasions in the summer of 2024. Only on the last occasion did I begin to see the Dragonflies and Damselflies that this site is noted for. You can also usually see Hobbies swooping to catch these insects but this year has been the exception when I have visited. Summertime in the UK is often not the easiest time to photograph and video birds in the UK so I usually move onto butterflies, dragonflies and damselflies. However after a wet autumn, winter, spring and early summer, the numbers of insects is well down on recent years. Having acquired a DJI Osmo Pocket 3 action camera I can now capture some 'B-Roll' footage to add a different element to the vid...

I'm back at my local nature reserve - Moor Green Lakes Area - in the summer of 2023. This time I've included a bit more of a review of my time with the Nikon P950. Although I go out bird watching primarily, I also video/photograph anything else I see. With good numbers of damselflies and dragonflies I often take these with the benefit that I can learn more about them when I get home and review ...

With reports of up to 4 Bitterns being seen at Dinton Pastures Country Park and having not seen one before, I went over there on 24th Jan 2023 with a friend. We were very pleased to find that one of the Bitterns was in the same location and showing well. I don't know what causes the annoying shimmering effect when panning along the reeds. Feel free to give advice in the comments below.

Having acquired a Nikon Coolpix P950 camera late in 2022 I visited a local nature reserve on many occasions in the first 6 weeks of 2023 to capture mainly video clips of birds. I decided that the easiest way to categorise the videos would be by the 4 main locations on my walks through the nature reserve and extended area. This is the last one - part 4 - Fleethill Farm. hi there Shane here in the midlands nr Coventry , started watching and subbed following buying recently a second hand p900, I'm over the moon with the pictures I've taken in the last 2 months and amazed by the quality of, considering the small censor size, etc,,, and I'm comparing those pictures against my Lumix g9 and Nikon dslr that has a ap sc censor, I expected the camera to be a lot worse , shocked and happy with the results I've had , so much that I've ordered a Lumix fz1000 , cos that's similar. with a bigger censor , so fingers crossed and all that cheers Shane,,, will put a review and some sample pics on my small UA-cam channel in the next 10 days,, called Motorcycles And Things ,,,,,cheers Shane uk
Hi Shane. I've met several P900 users on my travels who've all been happy with the camera. The quality of pictures from such a small sensor is hard to believe though the camera does need reasonable light to perform well. I'll keep an eye out for your review. Thanks 😊
Well I have a P950. I bought for mainly wildlife and distant shots. I also a have a ff. I was moving to M43 until I found this camera. I may stick with what I have got now as I can get some great shots. I notice you have smooth movement when walking and panning the camera. I wondered what equipment you use if anything. Maybe a gimbal or not? Or is it just practice to get the steady video?
Hi Phil that's interesting - you have both ends of sensor sizes covered! I use a DJI Pocket 3 for videoing while walking and often when panning. I usually put a note somewhere near the bottom of the screen to indicate which camera I'm using if there is likely to be any confusion.
Thank you, Peter. Very helpful. Maybe, one day, we'll see you filming a tutorial like this in the wild? Just hinting. ;-) Have a great 2025
Thanks and yes when I next add a tutorial it will be somewhere lighter. It shouldn't be too difficult to improve on these 😊. Happy New Year
Thanks for sharing with us how you edit bird photos and nice bird observation videos too. A big LIKE from me. Greetings from Singapore. Happy New Year 2025.
Thanks for commenting Cheiko 👍 and Happy New Year.
That was a very interesting video Peter you capture the images really well I use the Gh 7 and the G9 mk2 I must say the P950 is very impressive and I am tempted to try out the P950 as it’s giving you such very good results I edit in FCPX but you are getting great results with your software looking forward to seeing what you do in 2025 happy new year to you regards Dave ❤👍
Happy New Year Dave😊. I think the P950 would be a bit of a come-down from the cameras your using. I'm considering that one day I might move up to a camera like the G9 Mk2 but I'd need the 100-400 lens + 1.4 teleconverter for many of the places where I go birding (Micro Four Nerds says the lens won't cope with the 2x teleconverter). I get most of my decent stuff by spending a lot of time out there and rejecting at least 95% of what I capture. I missed a few shots this morning because the auto-focus wasn't playing ball 🙄
@@honky014 I have tried MFT with a 100-300mm lens and the Nikon image quality still won hands down in spite the small sensor. I'm currently using the Nikon P1000 & the RX10IV (clear zoom) as my wildlife combo. The Nikon for birds replacing my way to heavy spotting scope & the close focusing Sony for general wildlife. I'm looking to purchase eventually as an MFT user at Phase detect Olympus body & their 100-400mm with teleconverter 1.4 as the ultimate all in one solution. You cant crop the Sony image after using clear zoom as it results in to much of an image deterioration. Providing the Olympus combo is sharp enough there should be plenty of scope for cropping from such a good sized sensor to yield some nice close-ups.
Thanks for sharing Mark. My heavy spotting scope tends to stay at home now I have the P950. I happened to meet a guy the other day who was very happy with his Sony RX10 IV and left his interchangeable system at home preferring the convenience of a fixed lens on what is a very good camera. It's a pity there doesn't look like being a mark V. It will be a while before I get another camera - I still have some of the basics to learn. In the meantime I'm determined to show the best I can get out of the P950.
Amazing video, im receiving my very own P950 soon... lotta negative comments and remarks about this camera, people dont realise that without cropping images can be comparable to an average (not professional) DSLR, and with such a massive zoom capability there is barely any need for cropping other than changing the aspect ratio and/or repositioning the subject for composition. And low light capability isnt the cameras strength but it has so many other features that outweigh its cons so it is overall an amazing camera, especially for wildlife and birdwatching, especially if one is dealing with skittish animals.
Thanks Nikhil 👍. I've been pleasantly surprised by how well the video and pictures turn out from such a small sensor. Being able to zoom in and not disturb the wildlife is a major plus.
Lol 🐣
Nice one Peter, it is as you say a way of getting close to wildlife without scaring them away, is it the best camera out there? no, but to get the range of the P950 you would have to spend a fortune. You really do bring the qualities of the camera to the fore. Very well done, a Happy New Year to you and yours.
Many thanks Richard. I'm still in bird watching mode and not yet prepared to spend hours in a hide to get the perfect photo and even further away from setting up a portable hide to get close enough for an average telephoto lens. Happy New Year 😊
Sounds like the zoom is very noisy, can it zoom in slowly or is it one speed? I'm looking at purchasing the same camera. Nice work by the way, you have great subject material.
Thanks Neil. The internal microphone picks up lots of the zoom noise. I don't mind it too much except at the extreme end when it has an unpleasant rattle. Using an external microphone would solve this but be more trouble. The zoom control around the shutter button can move slowly or quickly depending on how far around you pull it. The zoom control on the side of the lens can be set in the menu to fast, medium and slow.
wonderful. beautiful birds. thank you for sharing! my country is also very rich in bird species. invite you to visit and take pictures! thank you very much!
Many thanks - your country does indeed have an abundance of often very colourful bird species 😊
I enjoyed watching it, thank you for your effort. The shots, explanations and music are really impressive. Thank you.
Thanks for the comment - much appreciated.
Loved the video, loved the pictures, hated the music. I have the p1000, bought the wife the p950
A friend of mine has a similar feeling about the music. I'll try finding something a bit more classical for a future video, but as a jazz fan, that's what I'm likely to use for most videos.
@@honky014 If it's low enough I can hear you it's fine, when you struggle to hear what you're saying...not so much.
The 950 is a greatest of all time. Have refurbished 510 a solid and good $280 choice
Thoroughly enjoyable video as usual ....i use the same camera Nikon P950 but i edit my videos in Davinci resolve
Thanks Digger 👍 - I also use Davinci Resolve but now edit the Raw files from the P950 before importing them into Resolve. I started using DarkTable as a Raw editor but have now treated myself to DxO PhotoLab 8.
@@honky014 i use Nikons NX studio to edit my raw photos basically because its free😬 i did try Davinci Resolve for raw photos but you had to convert them 1st in adobe which made it too long winded and then i use Davinci Reolve for the video files and actully making my YT videos
I like free software 😊and still have NX studio. I recently tested a trial version of DxO Photolab 8 and liked the result so much I decided to treat myself while it was on offer. It does go against the grain though - the app isn't cheap!
I watched with a great pleasure.Thank you.
Ah - thanks for the comment 👍
Think p1000 and 950 both goat cameras. Greatest of all time. Zoom 24-3,000.

950 very good camera, have p510 , 2012 vintage bought 2024 $280 great pictures. Great video
Like the video
Have p510 2012 $280 great photos
Another brilliant video Peter great narration regards Dave👍
Thanks Dave 🙂. With hindsight I might have split the video into two parts.
wonderful documentation.... I have p900 and went for birdwatching today. found rare cream coloured courser with resident Indian courser. took very good shots of them together. good luck with future birding
Many thanks. I'll have to look those birds up. 👍
Thank you Peter 😊 well done on your latest video. Keep.it up. All the best.
Thanks Jason - much appreciated ☺️
Lovely birding locations and great birds! Lovely video and photos. Watching the starlings with the music, I started to doze, mesmerising and soothing! Thankyou!
Thanks Tony. The footage of the starlings is sleep-inducing. 😊
@@honky014 Mesmerising murmuration ! Each one different, but all come with the 'wow' factor. I wonder if when all the birds took off from the water, a peregrine may have been seen high above? Always thrilled to see a male hen harrier, even a female sets the heart racing.
Enjoyed peter.
Thanks 👍
Nice video
Thanks 👍
The ‘ripple’ worked a treat Peter. Video, commentary and musical accompaniment integrates so well. Thanks for sharing Woody.
Many thanks Woody! 😊
I have used a couple of raw noise software programs that seem to help quite a bit with pictures from the p950. The program removes some noise and creates a dng raw file that will open in darktable as a raw file.
I tried Nikon's NX Studio software to start with which is pretty good but then saw that Darktable was rated with the best for results, but was a bit trickier to learn. However I found enough UA-cam tutorials to help me over the initial learning curve and now open the RAW (NRW) directly in Darktable. It hss 2 or 3 denoising modules that a few clips might have benefitted from.
Brilliant demonstration Peter you did the colour grading really well an enjoyable video well done regards Dave ❤
Thanks Dave 😊. I'm not sure how much I'll be using D-Log M and HLG in future but I'll certainly be making more use of RAW files.
Great photos, the adjustments really made them pop. you certainly seem to have a handle on that software, Darktable? Definitely going to check it out. Thanks for sharing, you never disappoint.
Thanks Richard. Darktable is free software with a reputation that it's a bit hard to get started with, but I found some excellent tutorials on UA-cam. I still have quite a bit to learn about all the things it can do.
Stunning! And some lovely adjustments to the photos. Egyptian geese certainly seem to be building up all over. Just a few years ago I would look out for the odd pair travelling to Norfolk, now here in Essex there's lots. I loved the footage of the deer too. I don't see roe deer near here so only see those on my travels. Thank you for sharing the beautiful wildlife and scenery out your way!
Thanks Tony. I'm hoping that I can actually capture a bit more actual bird footage over the winter. This summer was quite challenging.
@@honky014 So much foliage and the harsh light on the long hot days wouldn't have helped. I enjoyed watching your grebes, each with a fish. I recently watched a cormorant at Abberton reservoir. coming up with a fish each dive, while a little egret nearby, didn't even catch a tiny morsal. A birding day without a camera and all going on about 20 feet away. I saw my first two redwings of the winter yesterday November 1st.
@@tonycritcher3419 It was mostly the rain this summer which flooded the usual scrapes and kept the birds away. You've beaten me to it with the redwings though they must be around here as nearly 4k were recorded not far away by people who do bird counts.
@@honky014 Was an awful summer wet then almost drought conditions, not good for my garden customers either, but I retired this year so looking forward to more birding and some photography. Goodness, so many redwings already, I usually hear so many night time flyovers, but not this year.
I don't hear any 'zoom' noise in your videos. How do you silence it? Your 'views' are spectacular
I usually leave the zoom noise in the video. However I'm likely to reduce the volume a bit when editing the video. The zoom does tend to 'clatter' a bit at the far end of the range. Thanks for the compliment 😊
How often in these shots are 'on' a tripod? Your shots are so smooth!
I got used to having a tripod with me because I nearly always used a scope when out birding. However I don't use it as much now with the camera, managing to get by with the ledge of the windows in hides and fence posts etc. Birds rarely wait around while you put a tripod up and mount the camera.
SOme good info about the P950. I have a P900 which i think is almost the same
Thanks! The P950 undoubtedly shares a lot with its predecessor.
The black headed gull 'Swagger'! Lovely to see the tawny owl. I like it when the seasons change as some migrants arrive whilst others are leaving. Lovely video, as are all that I've seen so far, very relaxing thanks to your outings, patience and editing!
Thanks Tony. Yes, I'm also looking forward to seeing the winter thrushes and ducks.
@@honky014 I've heard redwings calling as they arrive at night here over the east coast, but still to see the first for this autumn/winter.
Stunning! Lovely locations and wildlife!
Thanks again Tony 😊
@@honky014 You are so welcome, a lovely channel to enjoy!
Beautiful photography and commentary! Was all the camerawork with the P950 as these are some of the clearest photos I have seen taken with one. I was thinking about getting one but some of the photos and videos have been pretty poor with other videos I have watched, finding out about its quality and features. But your camerawork and subjects have given me more positive thoughts on buying one. I am a birder and of course like other wildlife too and would like to get better photos of the Chinese water deer in my area. Thank you again for sharing the beauty of our British Countryside. I have Liked and Subscribed!
Thanks for the kind comments. I did use an action camera (DJI Osmo Pocket 3) for quite a bit of the footage in this video. However I noted down in the right hand corner at the beginning of each clip whenever I wasn't using the P950. The slow motion footage of the bumble bee wouldn't have been possible on the P950. I've been particularly pleased with the photos of dragonflies and it's given me a whole new area of interest. The small sensor means that low light photography or situations that need very fast shutter speeds, like birds in flight, are likely to be a problem. It could be ideal for Chinese water deer as long as you can avoid heat haze problems.
@@honky014 Many thanks, I was so engrossed in the photos and videos, I didn'r read the captions, my mistake, I will watch and enjoy it again and use the pause to learn more. Thank you for replying. Keep up the good work
Have you found the lack of weather proofing problematic on the 950? Especially as where you are seems humid sometimes... Thanks for the informative and relaxing video
I've never had a problem with the lack of weather proofing but then the camera is usually in a waterproof bag and I always have a brolly with me regardless of the forecast. I did try videoing in light rain with a brolly protecting the camera but it proved a bit too tricky to get any decent footage. Humidity by itself has never caused a problem.
@@honky014 You mean it's in a " plastic bag"? While you are hiking,/ walking in say a heavy seaside mist? On the west coast of Canada.. It rains a lot here...;-)
I keep the camera in a padded camera bag that is waterproof. I like to go out when it's misty but wouldn't want the camera to get more than a few spots of rain.
are you into ASMR Peter?;😂
No - I'd heard of it but had to remind myself what it meant.
Hello Peter, really a nice movie of you and very pleasant to watch.A beautiful nature video ......Greetings Gijs 🤠🤠
Many thanks Gijs - your own videos seem close to perfection to me 😊
@@honky014 Hello Peter,i am trying to get the best out of it and that takes mostly a lot of time. When i see something interesting i spend hours to get closer, look for the right composition and light and background.I am very lucky with the 1300mm tele and macro on my lens.Thank you for your nice words!! 😊😊
Great video, so relaxing and love your commentary. I also have Pocket 3 and recently purchased P950. Can’t wait to use it. Thanks for sharing!
Many thanks - I'm sure you'll have fun using those cameras, I know I do 👍
Do you face any issues in Nikon p950 ???
The camera has always worked perfectly well. It will always have its limitations because of the small sensor size.
Is there any issue in camera you are facing right now???
The camera has always worked well but has its limitations. I'd like to be able to take detailed pictures of birds in flight and slow-motion video in 4k. However it suits me fine at the moment - I enjoy being out in nature and being able to capture some of what I see is a bonus.
Would a tripod be necessary for this camera when shooting at 500-1000mm? Or would handheld be ok?
For video at long focal lengths a tripod is very useful. Having said that I often get by all the way up to 2000mm if I have something to stabilise the camera such as the window of a bird hide or even a fence post.
@@honky014 thank you so much! God bless!
Would stills for long focal lengths be ok handheld?
This is probably the wrong camera for stills at long focal lengths handheld. To minimize action blur you need a fast shutter speed which in turn requires a high ISO. Pictures from this camera with a high ISO are extremely grainy - often good enough for an ID but not something you'd want to keep or to share.
Excellent video but the background music a bit overpowering
Thanks! A few people have mentioned that the background music is too loud. I keep working on it.🙄
The quality of the video suggests a tripod is used. Location, video, stills, commentary and music combine beautifully. Great production values above the ruck. Dragonflies are magic!
Many thanks - much appreciated 😊
I'm here after searching about P950. I really like this video and keep me watch it till the end.
Many thanks! 👍
Excellent video and informative. Not sure I know where Warren Heath is?
Thanks Peter. Warren Heath is part of Forestry Commission Land, NNE of a large village called Hartley Wintney in Hampshire.
Thank you for dropping the music volume down while narrating and for sharing your photographic journey with us. Well done on the video. It brought me to places that I may never venture to and has shown me beauty which I may not have been able to behold 🙂👍
Many thanks! Getting the audio settings right has proved a challenge. I'm hoping to copy the settings used in this video, going forwards. 😊
