The Truth About the Current State of Employee Well-Being and What Leaders Can Do About It
When the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services required that skilled nursing facilities become trauma-informed, few organizations knew what it meant to be trauma-informed; how to implement a model; or measure its success. Since the inception of the regulation, organizations have reportedly done very little to implement a trauma-informed care model.
Running parallel to this requirement is the fallout from the COVID-19 pandemic that triggered a wave of trauma among the long-term care workforce that left an indelible mark on the senior care workforce. The pandemic took a significant toll on the mental and emotional well-being of the long-term care workforce, ushering in a new era of unprecedented staffing challenges and shortages.
This session offers invaluable insights into the intersection of COVID-19-produced trauma, adverse childhood experiences, and social determinants of health. Frontline staff have been at the forefront of the COVID-19 pandemic, facing unprecedented levels of stress, uncertainty, and exposure to trauma-inducing situations.
Despite the critical role they play in providing quality care to older adults, the psychological toll of their work and their history of trauma has often been overlooked or understudied. This session underscores the need to adopt an integrated trauma-informed care approach to create environments that support the healing and growth of employees while also fostering organizational resilience and success.
Objectives:
- Understanding Trauma: Participants will gain an understanding of trauma and why it’s critical for senior living leaders to understand the trauma their employees experience.
- Understanding the Adverse Childhood Experience (ACEs) Study: Participants will develop an understanding of Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs), including a discussion of the original study and the impact of ACEs on an individual's physical, emotional, and mental health across the lifespan. Participants will understand the ACEs study as it pertains to the long-term care workforce.
- Implementing Trauma-Informed Practices: Participants will explore strategies for integrating trauma-informed practices into workplace culture including trauma-sensitive hiring practices, employee assistance programs, and professional development opportunities aimed at fostering resilience and promoting well-being among staff members affected by trauma.

Absolutely ridiculous to expect staffing ratios in the average facility across America to ever change enough for this approach.

It's sad and surprising that in 2023 this is considered a new approach. I set up a programme doing the same thing in 2005 and it was rolled out to 60+ care homes in the UK. There were numerous magazine articles and radio coverage and it got on the front cover of dementia and nursing magazines and it was a finalist at the National Care Awards. I visited a dementia care home in the UK last week - the first I've been in for several years - and sadly they'd gone back to using colouring books and playing games suitable for 5 year olds.

Oh my viewing this has nearly made me cry... Your facility, staff enablement and training and holistic approach is for me - dementia care utopia.... Why please why is it.... that such a high+++ proportion of aged care staff not understand this care approach or appear unable to prioritise dementia patient happiness and wellbeing? This is heartbreaking for me and one I fight triple time to overcome. Thank you for your inspiration and wisdom I have accidently come across today and although I am and reside in Australia working within your team towards unified patient goals for me wld be like winning the lotto.... ps.... this is my joy also filling my heart more than I cld imagine.... and has also been my dream for nearly 15 yrs... please consider myself next time hiring... please. THANK GOD FOR PEOPLE PASSIONATE ABOUT FANTASTIC, LOVING DEMENTIA CARE FOR THISE WE CARE FOR ❤

Thank you for organizing this wonderful event. The amount of information presented was impressive, and even now after listening again to the speakers in this recording, I realized how much more I can learn. I suggest re-watching certain parts of the recording so that we can all gain a better understanding of what it's like to live with cognitive change and how we can provide better support to those individuals.

This was very informative. It reinforces so many of the tools that I have used over the years with those I care for with dementia. I discovered how music from the specific era of the care receiver and/or art work, perhaps an outing to an art museum.

The Earth is cooler with the atmos/GHGs/albedo not warmer. To perform as advertised the GHGs require “extra” energy upwelling from the surface radiating as a black body. ua-cam.com/video/0Jijw7-YG-U/v-deo.html The kinetic heat transfer processes of the contiguous atmos molecules render that scenario impossible. No greenhouse effect, no GHG warming, no man/CO2 driven climate change or Gorebal warming.
