Mud flat launch a Nucanoe Frontier 12 kayak with beach tires and Freedom Launcher landing gear ??
This is my first ever attempt at a mud flat launch using beach tires. I'm on a Nucanue Frontier 12 kayak equipped with the Freedom Launcher landing gear from Wilder Side. I've had customers focus on mudflats since other bigger boats can't get to these waters, so I just had to try it myself on some local water.
You can see how the event unfolds here.
The landing gear system performed flawlessly in my opinion.
If you are interested in a Freedom Launcher for Nucanoe, that can be found here:
www.wilderside.life/product-page/freedom-launcher-sportsman-classic-for-nucanoe-u10-unlimited
or
www.wilderside.life/product-page/freedom-launcher-sportsman-classic-for-nucanoe-frontier-12
After the mudflat launch and land, I launched from a regular ramp and then tried out the propulsion system -- which worked well. See other video in this channel for that experience.
Cheers,
David

    Launch and land in a difficult muddy area in under 6 minutes-Awesome!. It doesn't matter what cart system you use, there will always be some amount of effort to launch and load by yourself. That being said, nothing does it easier, quicker and more safely than the Freedom Launcher. And most free standing unattached carts would have failed at this muddy launch. The Freedom launcher with both sea tug wheels and available pontoon wheels gives the kayak angler every option to land in the widest variety of ground conditions more easily and effectively than anything else on the market,. Full disclosure I am an owner and user of the Freedom Launcher on my PA14. I have used a variety of carts including Wilderness systems adjustable carts. I have had native sidekick (similar to boonedox landing gear) on a previous kayak bonafide p127. Nothing works any easier or more efficiently than the Freedom Launcher. The big step saver in using the Freedom launcher is no extra lifting of a heavy kayak to place a cart underneath it or having to insert the native sidekick/boonedox landing gear axles into the mounting bracket on the kayak. This saves your back from injury and it makes it possible for more individuals of varying strength and age to move and use larger heavier kayaks with ease if they want to use bigger boats. I am 61 and I am so grateful to David and his invention of the Freedom launcher that enables me to use my Hobie PA14. The Freedom Launcher is a game changer when it comes to launching, landing and moving a kayak around. Thank you David!

      Haha... actually everybody is going to have a first time... but few of us want others to see our "first time". That morning it was spitting rain so we had a short window to shoot. Geoff is a volunteer who did his first launch of a Hobie Outback using both the scupper cart and the Freedom Launcher. I'm sure with practice it would get easier. I keep the scupper cart in storage. The Freedom Launcher goes everywhere the Outback goes.

    I went to their website and the price is cost prohibitive. $700-850. I'm not poor but I refuse to pay that much money for a set of launching wheels.

    • @wildersidegear
      @wildersidegear 9 днів тому

      That's a fair perspective. There are many other options that cost less. For those who are 65+ and injured their bodies using other solutions, the cost becomes less of an issue... it's nice to have options on the feature/cost spectrum.

    Once you enter the boat, the wheels are going to sink into the bottom, which for very soft bottoms could be a problem? Solutions that occur to me: the wheels rotate forward first to push off, the continue rotating to back; wheels the can rotate in either direction; wheels that can be raised as well as rotated.

      Great idea!! This location was rocky and one side got hung up on a small boulder. The nice thing is that once you are floating, rotating the leg moves the kayak and allows the leg to lift up and out of the way. So far, I haven't launched in mucky conditions... I'm not looking forward to that opportunity!!

I am also guessing When you take them off You can put them back in the holes from the top with the wheels facing up.

    • @wildersidegear
      @wildersidegear 3 місяці тому

      I have heard and observed what you suggest: Using the Hobie cart to get near the water; then tip the kayak and remove the cart. (I have had customers do this method regularly with a Hobie PA12 and injure their shoulder holding the kayak tipped while installing or removing the wheels). Then you simply drag the kayak the last 5 yards. I purposed not to do that since I wanted to see a full wheeled launch side by side with our solution. Depending on what gear you have in back, it should work to slip the wheels upside down in back scuppers. The top of the rods may drag a bit in the water, but it is such small diameter that it probably makes no difference in speed on water.

I’m not mechanically inclined or confident I can install them to take on the project on my own and it would be nice if there where installation services available near me as there are for my current landing gear because I would get these in a heartbeat over my current landing gear. Less weight on the wheels means less stress caused to the hull. Some people, like me, actually prefer that.

    • @wildersidegear
      @wildersidegear 5 місяців тому

      Hi, well.. maybe not actually. What happens when the leg is angled back. If you do a free body diagram when the kayak is on the level, that is putting a torque load on the hull because of the angled leg. That isn't a good thing. What we do is design the mount differently so that we put less loads on the hull, specifically torque loads caused by hitting obstacles like pot holes or curbs. Those can do real damage, especially if your mounting holes are close together. We spread ours out to reduce the potential to damage the hull. So far, working well on my customer's fleets of big kayaks.

    • @ChrisJu3
      @ChrisJu3 5 місяців тому

      @@wildersidegear I understand your reasoning, that's why they use a long backing plate to absorb that rotating force. however, that angled back leg also serves as a suspension, handles uneven roads better I think. In your design, when the wheels hit a rock, the torque load on the hull is not too much less (FBD's, roughly 1/5 kayak weight less?)

    • @ChrisJu3

      @@wildersidegear Btw, I was thinking of a design similar to yours, but is more like a trailer jack design, which would requires aluminum welding. Structurally it's more stable, and smaller size, can also be as easy as your design ito deploy/stow the legs.

      Fair question. This was a demo for those who wanted to see the setup on a Titan. Greg often launches on a shallow gravel bar where it is a gradual drop off. Right next to his house. A trailer launch would be difficult.

      @wildersidegear 5 місяців тому

      Rick, I respect that. For some, a trailer is absolutely the right solution. Others don't have room in their garage or property for a trailer. Paying $80-100 bucks a month for storage adds up pretty quickly (ask how I know!). Some of my customers only have a pickup and then a hoist system in their garage to get the kayak out of the way. I'm glad you are happy with your trailer solution. Each person has to figure out what works for their situation.

    It’s so painful to watch someone put a $3700 kayak on an abrasive surface and just grind it off into the water under the full weight of their body. Just walk 6” deep into the water man, Jesus.

    • @wildersidegear
      @wildersidegear 5 місяців тому

      Jesus walked on the water, but none of my friends do. But I have had friends slip and fall at the bottom of the ramp in 3" of water on the slick as snot moss that grows on the concrete. Did a real number on their back. So when you get to be over 60 years old, you weigh the potential for hull damage vs body damage differently. I can add a Kydex wear plate or weld some plastic on a badly worn kayak. A healthy back or knees is worth much more than $3700 for many of my customers.

    From a aesthetic point of view, you should really round off or angle the lower rear portion of the bracket. That huge slab of metal looks heavy and awkward. A major selling point of the Boondox wheels is their sleek and minimalist look.
