Master Masking in DaVinci Resolve | Color Grading Basics (Ep 3/7)
In this episode of our Color Grading Basics series, we’re diving deep into the art of masking in DaVinci Resolve. Masking is one of the most powerful tools available for precise color grading and creative visual effects, allowing you to isolate specific areas of your footage and apply adjustments without affecting the rest of the image.
Throughout this tutorial, we’ll break down the essential techniques you need to master masking, including how to use Power Windows, refine your masks for clean results, and track moving objects within a scene. You’ll also learn practical applications of masking, from isolating skin tones and enhancing skies to creating cinematic lighting effects and emphasizing key elements in your frame.
Whether you’re a beginner just starting out with DaVinci Resolve or an editor looking to sharpen your skills, this episode will give you a solid foundation in masking techniques that you can apply to any project.

Maybe you just don't know it yet 😆
thanks for this !
@@Onyemaenumaurice No problem!
Hi, thanks for sharing the amazing video. I would like to ask you a question, but maybe you are too professional and you will laugh. ;) I use my Lumix GH6 only for video and I make documentaries in remote areas of Africa in 4K 4:2.2. I have to use it in semi-AUTO because I don't have time to play with anything. I would like to leave the shutter speed fixed for the 180° rule, so then the GH6 chooses everything else, both with the aperture and with the ISO in Auto. I would like to buy a fixed ND filter instead of a VND of about 3 stops and always keep it mounted on the lens on days of full sun. Then when the light decreases, I remove it. Up to now I have used a VND but it bothers me to turn it to find the right position. Do you think what I would like to do with the fixed ND is stupid? Thanks for your advice.
Although I would never use semi auto or a solid ND I don't think it's stupid. Many run and gun filmmakers do use the setup you mentioned. So if it works for you it's a great setup! Just make sure to do testing before using it on a real project. Hope this helps! 🙌
these shots are amazing 🔥😍

Beautiful. How do you expose your footage?
Much appreciated! I just watch my scope and push the Highlights to clipping and then pull it back below the clipping point. That was I have maximum information without overexposure.
@ great work! Thanks so much!!
@lioncityhyperbole Appreciate it! I will share a very handy tip for that in a future video but right now I have some other ones in the works! 🙌
@ great looking forward!
Beautiful. What aspect ratio is this?
Appreciate it! Roughly 2.35:1, not exactly I think but yeah. ❤
I’m having trouble finding the NTSC/PAL switch on my Sony FX3 after updating to firmware 6.00. It used to be located near the date and time settings in the menu, but now I can’t seem to locate it anymore. Has anyone else experienced this issue? If you know where it’s located now or if it’s been moved, I’d really appreciate your help! Thanks in advance!
For me it's still located in the same place after update 6.0: MENU → (Setup) → [Area/Date] → [NTSC/PAL Selector] → [Enter]
Insane 🔥 The cinematography 👏🏼❤️
@@mohammademon5035 Appreciate it man! Cheers! 🙌
can you use your tiffen pro mist under the VND?
@@jamiemarsh1 Yes, that is possible. Mine is stuck on my 100-400 and I had to use it underneath by accident so it works just fine haha
@ would it cause vignetting on wider lenses/focal lengths?
@jamiemarsh1 Up to 24mm you should be relatively fine, in the sense that it's a tiny bit you can fix in post.
✌....
🙌
Does it come with a CPL? If it doesn't, does adding a Nisi CPL affect the outcome?
I'm not quite sure since I don't use a CPL myself. But I think nisi does offer a CPL for the swift system so it should be possible. It's always a bit iffy because variable ND filters are two CPL filters stacked on top of each other so adding another can cause weird effects. You might need to ask nisi directly for confirmation if they don't state it anywhere in which order you should put them.
@ thank you
@DynamicLearning4u No problem, I'll test it out when I have the chance but I have no clue when I'll have a CPL to use haha
@ haha. Ok
Thank you. I will practise diligently. 🫡
You're welcome! Loads of practice will make you be able to see white balance without needing to use scopes etc and then it's going to be a piece of cake after that! 🙌💚
This is obviously advanced coz he went straight to features and didnt show how he got there. I still enjoyed every bit of it
Explaining how every part of the powergrade works would be a very very long video. Most of the features I have separate videos about in my channel already so it would be a lot of work for information that is already out there. Appreciate the support man! 🙌

hi bro great stuff for colorgrading but cant downloading alll at a once can u pls help me
Thanks! You just need to download one of the DCTL files from GitHub. So you choose color balance for example and there is a tiny download button on the top right or left.
What a lot of work went into this video. The fact that you offer this for free is really nice for beginner filmmakers. Those people who sell courses only want to make money and not necessarily offer much more value.
Yeah, it's a common trend for big creators to learn DaVinci for just a year or something and instantly sell a course even tho the info is out there for free already. Just not easily accessible in a single place.
Hope this helped get you started with color grading. Again, my goal is to give back to the community that has taught me everything for FREE by giving it back for FREE. It takes a lot of time to make these kinds of videos so if you want you can leave a tip but it's not required: ko-fi.com/edouhoekstra
Make sure you use a bigger diameter than your lens. I found lots of vignetting on a 18-105 f4 Sony lens on the wide end with both filters on. I had to return it.
Yep, that's always the case with any VND with wider angle lenses. Mine is 82mm and I have had zero issues.
Good stuff man
