Two More. A Short Cutlass or Machete With a D Guard, And A Kukri or Khukuri
Both are forged from leaf springs. The cutlass has a 14 1/4" blade, just shy of 19" overall. The guard was forged from an old wrench, hardened and tempered blue. This is my first attempt at fullers. They are ground in. I left the forge scale on in hopes of disguising the amatuerish appearance a bit. Through tang, peened sword style, for the grip. That wood was a gift, don't know what it is. The Kukri/Khukuri has an 8 3/4" blade, 13 1/2" overall. It's not trying to be a real Nepalese copy. Has a full tang and no cho notch. It's a little thin by contemporary standards, but my understanding is that a lot of the old ones were thinner. I worked with what I had. Both blades are around 3/16" at the thickest spot, and both have distal taper forged in. I tapered the full tang of the Kukri, too. The cutlass sheath is leather with a frog, kukri is wood core, leather covered, also with a frog.

Small Harpoon Clip Full-Tang Bowie, Leather Cross Draw/Scout Style Sheath

5" blade, 8.5" overall length, distal taper on blade and tang for balance, forged from 1937 Ford leaf spring, Live Oak scales, hollow brass pins. The sheath is inspired by one Nick Wheeler made.

This project has been dormant for a while. Finally cobbled together an exhaust. It's just got so much rust in the body. Should have started with a better donor car, but oh well. The price was right.
Forged Sloyd-Style Knife With Leather and Wood Sheath
Переглядів 3253 роки тому
I made this from a little leftover piece of the same 1937 Ford leaf spring I used for the last Bowie. This time, I was actually successful in forging the bevels and profile, so I had a lot less grinding to do. I normalized, hardened, and tempered it without much fuss. Quartersawn Black Cherry handle, leather sheath with a Tulip Poplar case around the blade. The dangler eye is just old brazing r...

1937 Ford leaf spring, Ash handle (nothing fancy here, just a plain piece of leftover wood). Veg tan sheath holds the knife in pretty well for now, but we'll see what the future brings. I feel like I'm starting to do a better job with the plunge cuts. I cold blued the blade with one application, then buffed it with fine steel wool and oil. The usual cameo by Penny. She loves to dig.

Just some shots of the handle and guard. I was going to use 3 pins in the handle, but decided one would do. Quartersawn ash stained a little. No finish yet. Still got plenty of fiddly finish work to do.
Another Bowie. 1937 Ford Leaf Spring, Harpoon Clip, Work In Progress.

Honesty compels me to admit that, although I tried a little rudimentary beveling at the forge, this is mostly a stock reduction deal. 7" blade, 3/16" at the tang, full distal taper, just sanded to 220 grit for now. Dog Penny is still happy and healthy. Knock on wood.
Sater Banco Sweden Collared Axe Update. Hewn Handle, New Leather Mask

Just a look at the axe I handmade the handle for in previous videos. You can see that, as it dried, I was able to take up that gap it had under the collar. Also a look at a mask I made for it. I feel like my leatherwork is improving.

1967 Llama Especial in .22lr. Knocked together a little paddle style holster for it. You can see where I glued a plug in one hole I punched wrong. Oh well. My leatherwork is pretty utilitarian. The thumb break holds it snug with the hammer down. I carry in position 3. Spare me the lectures, please. It's my gun, after all.

Making progress. Mustard patina, homemade micarta scales on the Scalper, Walnut on the Bowie. Bronze guard, copper pins with epoxy. Still need sharpening and sheaths. Penny again. She loves to dig.

These will be presents for 2 USN Ensigns, friends of one of my daughters. Stock removal, 1937 Ford leaf spring, quenched in canola oil, tempered to 420F, sanded to 320 grit. You can see my dog Penny at the end, filling out from her life as a stray.

Just what the title says. Messed up and left a couple of dents in the leather with a spring clip. If I can't get them out, l'll either live with them or make another one. Brief cameo by new dog Penny, a rescue adoption and a good girl.

6" x 15/16" x 1/8" blade, distal taper, 4.5" handle. Forged from a Model T Ford handbrake lever. Oak handle, bronze bolsters made from old boat numbers. I left the patina on the base of the hilt. Through tang peened into a countersunk hole.

    • @jamesduncan6615
      @jamesduncan6615 2 роки тому

      It is a knife designed by rezin Bowie before the Alamo, very distinct style so it is a specific design 😐

    • @weswhite5715
      @weswhite5715 2 роки тому

      @@jamesduncan6615 Right, but I don't know of any reliable documentation of what the original Bowie design was, exactly. Perhaps you can direct me to that? The point I was making is that there is no real way to realistically prove that any knife is a "Bowie". There are certain characteristics, like the clip point, that are generally agreed upon, but no real hard and fast guidelines, as far as I'm aware. Even then, if you look at, say, Civil War D guard "Bowies", you will find huge variations in size, blade design, handle construction, etc. That's what I meant when I asked "what is a Bowie, anyway". You are right, though. I should have been more careful with my description. I wasn't trying to claim that this little knife is any kind of historic recreation.

    • @jamesduncan6615
      @jamesduncan6615 2 роки тому

      And that's completely understood do some homework on the Bowie knife their should be enough info to explain my point that a Bowie is very well known design...didn't meen to be difficult on this I've admired the Bowie since I was a kid and was just trying to get the info straight gd luck to you're search for knowledge and God bless👍

      If Google Translate is to be trusted, you are commenting about the orientation of the growth rings? They run with the head of the axe. That blank was a split half of the log, and I hewed the heart away. It's not ideal, because it was a small log, so they have more curvature than they should. You can see them at 00:46 in this video: ua-cam.com/video/-c1b2qEqjQI/v-deo.html
