Wheels on Wheels is about a full time wheelchair user living part-time in her minivan.
Hi! My name is Joan and since a car accident in 1985 I have been living life as a full time wheelchair user as the result of a spinal cord injury. I am now starting a new journey. I quit my job and will be selling my home and moving into my Dodge Grand Caravan. Come along on my journey to see how I tackle the unique challenges of setting up a van for living/camping as a person who is unable to stand up. I plan to do a lot of travelling so hopefully there will also be good information on accessible activities along the way.
Please enjoy my videos and feel free to make comments and suggestions that might be useful to me or anyone who views the videos.

love the music choice!
I feel your pain with the drone. I received two drones from two different friends who thought I'd use them. For the life of me I couldn't control the drones well, as you said any little bit of wind would make it drift etc. I was scared to fly it by myself because I would lose control. Turns out, you get what you pay for.... I bought a DJI mini 3 this fall and guess what - the pilot wasn't the problem! The DJI was so easy to fly and had such clear image quality. Batteries last about 20 minutes or so...so that is still an issue. I paid $450 USD for the drone, SD card, and extra battery. But if a drone is cheap in price it's like throwing your money away. I'm currently testing a Potensic Atom drone, which is a bit cheaper than DJI and it's holding its own! I'd recommend it - plus it has a few features that the DJI mini 3 doesn't have like "follow me" mode.
Well done to your friend and her eagle eyes. Beautiful photographs, I am so glad you're exploring again. Take care and have fun. Hugs from over the pond👋.
Great photos! I'm glad your van is fixed and that you have friends around you. Enjoy! Love the bike!
@@lisaroth7526 thank you!
Hope you are doing well these days
Hi Patti. yes im doing fine. how are you?
glad you are back on the road again
yes!
I liked the music choice too!
@@dcole109 thank you!
You did great for a beginner. You need to get a DJI drone. Like the mini 4k, mini 4pro, or even the new neo.( The neo is more a selfie drone that follows you unless you buy a separate controller ) Whichever one make sure to get the fly more combo that comes with 3 batteries. The gps on these drones makes it stay completely still even in mild to decent wind. The transmission will have miles on stable coverage, you'll love it. You know the controls now so you'll do great with a better drone. Lil tip when turning going forward turn both controls at same time. That way it rolls and yaws, leans into the turn. Anyway, again for a cheaper wifi dron that gets interference you did good. Don't expect any more out of it but 50-60 ft. ✌️ Wheelchair John in Idaho
If you can find the mini 2 or 3 they are both great also. There's always payment plans on Amazon or whatever. Seems like you love it so why not. I fell in love with flying drones and fly with goggles on, it's amazing..enjoy
@@k6lsn that’s great info John. Thanks! I will keep it all in mind. For now I will keep practicing with this one.
Excellent music for the situation! Good luck.
@@michellec8273 thanks!
I've definitely been wanting to get one. I think it would definitely help me get to see things that I can't actually get to physically with my power chair.😊
@@DisabledandPrepping ya I think it will be a great thing once I get it figured out
@out-spokenwheelsonwheels5870 I hear it does take a lot of time. Because it has a pretty big learning curve. But I have no doubt that you will get it soon.
Just came across 1:52 your video. You are so courageous. I have a question, but it's totally off subject. I'm also in a wheelchair, due to a motorcycle accident. I had ADA insurance, but they went MIA during Covid. At that time I belive it cost $200 a year. Their service consisted or gas, battery jumps lift repair, towing, and a ride dispatched, if needed. That was the most important of it all, because I'm in a electric wheelchair and none transferable. I'm located in souther California and haven't been able to find one period. I have AAA but the it doesn't serve any ADA services. If you or anyone reading this and know of one that service Southern California, that would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance
@@jus202 I hope someone is able to help you with that. I’m Canadian and not really familiar with what is available here.
We looked for you at the RTR, but we only went two days. We were in Lake Havasu as well that week. Maybe next year! Keep it up!
Yes I only managed to be there for one afternoon. I wasnt able to drive my van with out worrying if it was going to break down and then I left for Havasu. the van was not done until the RTR was almost over. I am sorry I missed you. it would have been nice to meet people who watch my channel.
awesome to hear you are taking care of business and smooth roads a head~~~ Thanks for posting an update!
Where did you get those panels I need those
They are called Access trax and are out of San Diego. Google them. I ordered them online and it was simple but costly.
Quality Inn w/No quality is not acceptable.
Well you really can not expect a lot for that price. It was clean and it had the basics that I really needed but yes..... it could have been better too.
You are inspiring me as I sit in my house looking at the thermometer. -25°C. Northern Alberta. 66 year old female T5-6 complete para. I'm so impressed with your travels, thank you for sharing.
I hope you find them inspiring if that is what you dream to do. I would definitely rather be here than in -25. Stay warm!
Things like the sink, handheld shower placement and doorway make one wonder if they actually consult wheelchair users when designing. :-)
Isn't that the truth! Is this the Patti that I met?
@@out-spokenwheelsonwheels5870 yup
Check to see if there are any Amazon lockers near you! That’s how I get Amazon deliveries. There is even a checkmark that requests your package by in a lower compartment.
@@Keepinitwheel306 oh! Good to know. Thanks.
@ you can also have things sent to the post office as General Delivery and c/o your name
I'm thankful that your van is all better and for the friends who helped you so much. Did you see a doctor and get your sore tended to? Blessings.
@@michellec8273 still working on that. Haven’t been able to get there yet
I am so glad they were able to fix the van! It's a real shame that your trip was spoiled by all the troubles, but your next trip should be wonderful!
@@lisaroth7526 it’s all good. The trip is just beginning!
Do you know if Amazon has their lockers available in that area? Cause you can have it sent to a locker.
@@DisabledandPrepping yes I will try that when I know I will be somewhere for long enough to receive it
Sending prayers your way 🙏
sorry you are having these problems
I'm so sorry you're having such a rough time after traveling so far to be able to enjoy the RTR. Relieved that you had help from Karen and Doug. I hope everything now is fixed to STAY FIXED and you can have a good time from here on out!
@@spidrawebster I hope so too!
Get some double sided small strips n put it back up again. Blessing
Fabulous! Other people I've watched with them make sure they both watch the drone and watch the monitor screen more. Good luck and enjoy learning.
What a fun toy, I love it. I enjoy following you on your journey, whether you're home or away. You're a huge inspiration to me Joan. Enjoy your drone.
Oh, that is so awesome that you get yourself a drone. I would love to have one myself. It would really come in handy to see things that I can't get to with my power chair but still would like to see those places.😊
Which one did you get? So excited for you. There is a huge learning curve, but you’re smart. You’ll get it figured out.
@@Andrewabley dang! I knew someone would ask me that. It’s a CHUBORY. A77 or something like that. Haha. Thanks for the vote of confidence. I hope you are right. lol
LOVE new fun toys!!!!! Looking forward to seeing more!!
👍🏾👍🏾
Congratulations. I'm sure there is a learning process.
Excellent shelving, Love the pull out desktops. You're getting pretty well set up. Thanks for the tour.
Yes I am really pleased so far!
Have you seen Freedom wheel chairs? They manuver over all terrain, and sandy gravel from the deserts moves great thru... They have payment programs., and scholorships.
I have not heard of them. I will google it.
I've been trying to figure out how to deal with the potty bucket in the van and putting it level with the bed looks like a good idea. I can walk reasonably but have a hard time with getting up and down off anything low or putting weight on my knees, basically need to act within the van as if I can't walk, and scooching over onto a bucket from the bed seems like the absolute easiest way. Squatting is out of the question.
@ They have all kinds, Electric & manual, $1200. is the best I saw on YT. all terain WC's.
@@Adornments4U I just had a look. That looks pretty cool. I do have my front drive which I brought with me this time. I just was not able to get it off the van with all my electrical problems. I hope it is going to help me a lot in the dessert. It is a Batec Hybrid.
@@marymactavish Yes I have really found this to be a great solution. I am in hotel now and I am not enjoying the transfer to the toilet. It is so much easier in my van.
Calvin did a great job on those cabinets. I definitely like the sliding doors; that was the right choice for sure. I'm glad things are better organized for you now. Having a bed platform is wonderful. You will probably find that it's never exactly right. I lived in my minivan for two years and must have changed it around a dozen times.
Yes i am already finding in more comfortable and much easier to use as well. I am really glad I did it and yes, Calvin did a great job.
Awww, that looks so cool.
I’m glad you shared the whole story, I was tearing up alongside you. Keep doing what you’re doing and eventually all these struggles will be a distant memory. I started out in my SUV and also spent a lot of time and money on hitch carriers and adaptations. It’s so frustrating but so worth it when you finally hit that sweet spot and everything is working well!
@@Keepinitwheel306 thanks Lisa. I’m sure you would have loads of info for me.
@ indeed! If you ever have any questions or just want to shoot the breeze about things you’re finding difficult let me know and we can make it happen
@ I would love to meet up and visit sometime once I have worked out all my van and skin issues dealt with.
One tough cookie!!! I will say a prayer for you. You are an inspiration. God bless!
Thank you. I apppreciate your prayers!
Bungee cord wheelchair somehow to your van when you get in and out of it for can't get too far away
Hmmmmm....... that could work. I had a u shaped hook welded to the bottom of my van to lock it there at night when I did not want to bring it inside. So that could work.
Are you Brian from Oregon?
I think the roadrunner wanted a lizard. I had my controls go crazy like that once, after I had bought a car that had been a rental, and it turns out the battery was just near the end of its life. It loses just enough power that the car works but the computer doesn't get enough power. It was also a Dodge. We depend on electricity so much if we are disabled. Even if you could climb all over the van, it would be frustrating to be going through electrical issues. It's scary when you might be stuck somewhere unable to get your chair in and out. I think you're really brave doing this with everything you've done. And I'm not saying like, “oh you're brave because you do this even though you are disabled.” I am too. But you are really brave to keep doing this thing that you love so much in spite of all the obstacles you have faced separate from your disability. Have you completely replaced your car battery with something brand new?
Hi yes my battery was replaced just before I left to travel here. So not the problem I guess. And yes I appreciate you clarifying that you are not saying I am brave because I am disabled. I agree with you on that.
I'm trying to figure out how I can have a van that I can get and store my power chair inside and still have room to camp in it. That won't work with my current Pacifica. I usually carry my chair on the rear, put that only works for short trips. Ideally, I could do it all and not spend more money, but I guess I'm going to have to suck it up eventually, and get a bigger van.
Even though I do not use a power chair I am thinking the same as you. A bigger van would be the answer to most of the problems. I just am not in a situation to be able to do that right now. Hopefully sometime!
I think you're an incredible lady and I really look up to you. So you keep doing videos the way you do and I will definitely keep watching. And you weren't crying alone I started crying with you. It takes a lot of guts when you're that frustrated enough set to turn on the camera. Sending prayers your way😊
Lol! You made me cry when you said you cried. Thank you for the words of support. it means a lot.
Oh, very cool road runner.😊
Well, I'm sorry you had battery trouble and then had to fix that. But I'm glad to see that you're in Arizona in the nice weather.😊
Me too!!!!
Thanks for keeping it real. I think a lot of abled people get the wrong idea about disability, ableism, and accessibility when they only see the good moments. Everyone has days where they're super-stressed out, but it's extra when everything just costs more and has extra barriers in front of it as a disabled person. What you're attempting in the minivan isn't easy...even for people who don't need to use a wheelchair. The minivan is just barely big enough for a tall abled person to hang out in with their possessions. You have the wheelchair and other accessibility equipment that you have to pack in as well. I had a lot of mobility van struggles myself this year...difficulty finding people to work on things, difficulty with people following through when paid, etc. So it's understandable to me that you were upset with things frequently taking longer or costing more than planned, or ending up with something that doesn't work right. As long as your mechanic signs off on the state of the minivan, I think you're fine sticking with it. You'll get it dialed in eventually and feel more confident about what you've created to allow you to camp with more independence.
Thank you ! You sound like you are very familiar with all of this. Do you minivan camp too?
@@out-spokenwheelsonwheels5870 I'm disabled, but not yet a wheelchair user. Tall and have camped in a minivan many times. Trying to transition to a full-sized van with lift (in case I become a wheelchair user). Mobility van issues (monopolies in the mobility industry, regular mechs being unwilling to touch a mobility van even when it doesn't have to do with the lift equipment) are something I'm experiencing for the first time. Not full-timing yet.
@@spidrawebster It is all so frustrating isn't it?
No need to apologize for life frustrations. They come to all of us in some form, or another. And just not having room can be one. For me technology sucks, I am too old fashioned and prefer a simple-ness. In fact I have a daughter in law that no longer speaks to me, because my old fashioned ways, and speaking is just too much for her. Lol😅 I didn’t know that you can speak old fashioned, unless it was maybe Shakespeare? 🤔Guess I should research that? I think that you handle so much more than most people, and should be allowed to do as you please. Cuz, you too are over 21. Have fun and stay safe! 🙏 I look forward to more videos , when ever, you see fit 😊
Ha ha. Good comments. Have to keep a sense of humour about things right?
You're incredibly brave. It's so frustrating to have car problems and since you're working with things that have to be invented, it's just amazing.
thanks Patti
Not fun JOAN, you will get it figured out and the Lord is with you every step of the way
Thanks Wendy!
I love your videos and I think your an amazing person with true adversity in your life. Best wishes to you...and HAPPY NEW YEAR 2025.
Thank you and Happy New Year to you too
Moments of frustration brings about an innovation. I understand some of the difficulties. Mobility aid failures, rocks, sand, etc make it hard to do or see what you want. Hope you are able to get your van up and running soon. Maybe need to contact Jackery. They have been helpful for me. What lift are you using for your chair?
I have not had a chance to contact them yet but will be doing so soon.
