Updating The Caster Wheel Project - Simple CNC Build
In this video, we’re updating our plywood caster wheels with a new design to make them quieter and smoother!
We’ll show you how we added a rubber layer to reduce noise and absorb floor imperfections. Watch as we experiment with different rubber sealants, create molds using a CNC machine, and tackle challenges in mold-making.
Finally, see the updated casters in action as we test them on our bandsaw cabinet.
If you’re into CNC projects or looking to improve your shop gear, this simple build is for you!
👉 The sealant we used to make the rubber wheels is Bostik MSP 106.

    As someone who has experience doing custom shaker style kitchen cabinets in the past, what you have done is harder to pull off than the common method of creating cabinets using rabbet joints etc. I personally like the look of maple/walnut for the face stiles and rails this adds significantly to the cost although baltic birch plywood can be just as expensive and keeps going up in price. A plywood countertop with lacquer also seems like a risky choice, laminate countertop would be a lot more resistant to stains and dents. Very interesting use of the CNC to create very tight tolerances seems like you had zero issues with fitting the panels together. Impressive.

    Couldn’t you create the mold with the body of the castor in the middle? So as to create the tire in place instead of removing it from the mold and reattaching it to the castor.

    • @Aribabox
      @Aribabox 6 днів тому

      That's a great question! We did consider creating the mold with the castor in place, but we found that this approach increased the risk of the sealant not filling the entire mold, which could lead to inconsistent results. By molding the tire separately, we ensure a more reliable outcome.

    Hi my friend! Do you know that mixing corn starch with acetic silicone you can obtain a fast curing rubber that gat hard in minutes, not days? With this formula you also achieve the abiliti to change the Rubber density by changing the amount of starch !

    This is so awesome!! Are you using a mold release spray? There are wax mold release sprays that work really well for other mold making applications.

    • @Aribabox
      @Aribabox 6 днів тому

      Thank you! We appreciate the suggestion. We didn’t use a mold release spray this time because we were experimenting with a rubber sealant and opted for WD-40 instead, as sealants typically don’t adhere to oily surfaces. However, trying out a mold-release spray in future projects sounds like a great idea!

    Man, have a look at diy aluminum casting. Foundries (especially home foundries) use a mix called green sand. Basically sand and oil that clumps together very well. They'll use a two-part mold that's basically a two piece box, press the buck(prototype molding part) halfway into the bottom, add the top and pack it full of sand except for a tube to make the filling and vent holes, disassemble the box and remove the part, the reassemble the box and pour molten metal into the void, creating the part. I bet $1 that for a simple part like this, you could cnc the wheel, press it into a similar mix, pull it back out, and just pour a two-part urethane rubber into it. No need for a two part box, just leave the top of the part open. I did something similar for my car's engine mounts. The sand breaks away easily when you pull your piece out, and is reusable. If you have trouble with the tire width, a trimming jig (not unlike your current mold) could make trimming it down a piece of cake. Not related, I love seeing your machine fly around at speed! Too many people running them too slow!

    • @Aribabox
      @Aribabox 6 днів тому

      Thank you so much for your detailed and insightful comment! I’m familiar with the green sand approach for metal casting, but I hadn’t considered it for producing plastic parts-definitely something to think about for future projects. The wheel was a relatively simple part, and while my method may not have been the fastest or most convenient, it got the job done. Your suggestion of using urethane rubber with a green sand mold is intriguing, and I might experiment with it down the line. Also, I’m glad you enjoyed seeing the machine in action! I love pushing it to its limits. Thanks again for the great advice!

      @Aribabox Місяць тому

      Thank you for watching and for your kind words! I understand that manually creating corner relief shapes like teardrops, T-Bones, and sniglets can be tiring. While Fusion 360 doesn't have built-in solutions for saving and reusing these shapes, there are several add-ins that can help automate this process. Some of these add-ins are free, while others might require a purchase. One popular add-in for this purpose is the Nifty Dogbone add-in, which you can find on the Autodesk App Store. We haven't used it ourselves, however, the feedback from the community is great.

    Hey Davis, I just discovered your channel today, amazing content! Thanks for sharing your experience. These are very motivational. Any tips on size and placement of the "dog bones"? Yours look so good. I don't seem to understand where to place them properly. Mine never turn out. :) thanks. Looking forward to more videos.

      Hi Jody! Welcome to our channel! I'm thrilled to hear you enjoy our videos. The size and placement of DogBones depend on your joinery - the size of the parts and the type of joinery you're using. Our favorite DogBone type is the "Sniglet" - it looks better than traditional options and also cuts better on the CNC router. There are many factors to consider before choosing the best DogBone solution for your projects. We're considering making a video on DogBones in the future to help out with this. Stay tuned, and thanks for your support!

      We wanted to keep them visible so we decided to skip the edge banding. After a couple of cours of lacquer, they are sealed nicely.

    I Like the board but I would probably use traditional chess pieces on it as I find the cutout ones all with the same outer edge distracting.

      Thank you for the feedback! I understand your preference for traditional chess pieces, especially if you're accustomed to their shapes and sizes. Your point about the cutout pieces having the same outer edge is valid, and it’s helpful to know how different designs impact gameplay.
