I pointed my circa 2011 Insignia digital camcorder directly at the sun for the total solar eclipse in Hardy, Arkansas, on April 8th, 2024, and this is what it captured!

Totality starts at 4:08. The train rolls in at 6:40. Railfans, trainspotters, eclipse chasers, umbraphiles, and lovers of small town Americana will all find something to love. Do you know what train this was? It was on the Hoxie to Thayer section about 2 pm on 4/8/24. Tell me in the comments!

Hundreds of thousands of migrating waterfowl stop at Loess Bluffs NWR (formerly Squaw Creek NWR) near Mound City, MO on their way south. Snow geese, along with many other species, can be seen here.

It was a cloudy day, but we did get a peek at the grandeur of the corona when the clouds briefly parted. This view is facing south from the road next to Eagle Pool, and the thumbnail is from totality at about 1:07 PM local time. Be sure to view my companion video of the view to the north from the same location. Note the drastic changes in lighting from the beginning to middle to end.

I had the opportunity to visit Fr. Schreiner's grave in August of 2015. As you can see, he has a beautiful spot for his final resting place. The American Fr. Rob Yes, the buildings are still there on the north shore of the island, but now they are used by the Gerace Research Centre. No longer affiliated with the Navy.

I haven't been there since the early 70s. Back then it reeked of sulfides and was heavily tainted with mercury. Has it been cleaned up?
It looked pretty clean and pristine and I didn't smell any sulfides. Hopefully they have gotten it cleaned up!
