Det var da fryktelig til sladding! Det burde vært mulig å få en raskere tid med mer presis kjøring.
That blue Sapphire racing away is one of the sexiest car things I've ever seen.
1:47 What is the background music called?
Darude - Sandstorm
I work at an independent mechanic shop in California. Lots of fancy vintage stuff, lots of fancy modern stuff. Im not sure how it made it's way into the states but a LHD Sierra showed up this week on a trailer. A few quick fixes and it was back on the road. Fortunately SOMEBODY had to make sure the alternator CONTINUED working (wink wink) so I took it home for the evening I've driven some serious stuff in my time at this shop, but This might be one of the greatest driving cars I've ever had the pleasure of beating around. 2600lbs and 250 some odd horsepower with a heap of turbo lag? Perfection. Sticky tires and those glorious 80's Recaros, just what the doctor ordered. Not sure what sort of suspension work its had but good lord is it a riot, its so inspiring to drive, such a special feeling. I couldn't believe it was that good, the gear change was to die for, the gas and brake pedal in perfect alignment for heal toe, and the way the power came on was delicious. CHEFS KISS Too bad we never got them here in the states, its such a practical car for how rowdy it is to drive. Makes my dads Merkur a bit tempting to throw money at....
Wow, so happy to read this as I am mid path to bringing one of these over to the states. I recently moved from San Diego to central Oregon because I want to own more cars like this. (Cali was just not having it.) I have an 83' R5 Turbo 2, a Mitsu Pajero Evolution and a Lister Bell Lancia Stratos and all 3 of them were a no-go in California. But Oregon was like "Welcome!" I wrench on all my cars myself to varying degrees of success and use them as intended. All the homologated cars see dirt from time to time and I beat on them, break them, fix them and repeat. But I found it so interesting your description of what the "Cossa" is like to drive. Can I ask... was it a 3 door Seirra RS Cosworth? Curious what repairs it needed. Overseas parts availability looks pretty good, no? BTW, the LHD's were sold mainly in Italy and Spain. Not super rare but very cool that is was LHD. The five hundred RS500 Cosworths that were made to homologate for touring car racing all came in RHD only.
Ah, that great British euphemistic acronym T.W.O.C. for car theft.
That’s mine from Richard level
Interesting how they try to blame Ford for their incompetent police and faulty justice system.
Legends tell, Clarkson still sits in that Soviet car and struggles to figure out how to start it
I love the Cosworth I had a poster of it on my bedroom wall. And yes I still would if I could get away with it.
Please anyone tell me the music name at 3:37 I forgot got the name and been trying since when to find the music.
The very last review put out by any of the trio. What a way to go.
The most successful race car ever made 🇬🇧 made engine
These were king in Australian touring car racing for a long time.
This is one of the "lesser" fast oldschool Fords but I bet even this in stock condition is now worth a pretty penny. You just never see them now. They weren't common even back then. They were in group 20 insurance which is hilarious considering it's a damn Fiesta.
No launch control?!?
We had the 4 door sapphire growing up. The central locking was also a joke. However, twice a year it drove us to our holiday destination a 1000+ kms away and it did so for years without any issues. Even in the heavy Spanish rains it didn’t bog down where other - newer - cars did.
💪💪💪💪💪👌👌👌👌😁
This is actually such a funny bit. I swear I’d watched every episode of Top Gear but I’ve literally never watched that bit before. Then getting stuck in the car was so funny.
I'm just learning about this car and I can't believe how many times it got boosted! Grand theft auto. This car was more desirable then the Grand national.
So i assume people who own these add a second set of injectors and said massiver turbo?
Remember, before GT-Rs, Evos and Imprezas, there's Ford Cosworths.
I remember vividly, as a child when I went on vacation to France. The brits next door where a construction worker / nurse couple like my parents. But they came to France in the bloke's inherited Cosworth, the full on rally specc. I begged my dad to let me get in for a drive as the dude who owned it had a amateur rally license. In terms of cars ( And I've been in a few and I drive a motorcycle so im not unfamilliar with thing that can go monsterously fast ) This thing. This Ford, even though it was old by the time I got myself in the byriders seat, the moment the engine started I knew I was in for something special This thing I still remember. We found a large piece of coast road leading to a dead end so no traffic and this man who's name I cant remember for the life of me, just put his foot on the pedal and all I remember was the massive smile I had and the sheer joy, not to mention his. We both loved speed and the adrenaline of fast acceleration and feeling the car respond smoothly to the imputs. The Fiesta Cosworth was witchcraft to me and the noise, the noise it made was just beyond good. The best drive I've ever experienced. Hands down.
We never got the Sierra Cosworth In South Africa. What we did get was a V6 powered Sierra. Ford SA then also shoved a V8 into it for production car racing and called it the Sierra XR8. Look forward to the day I see a Sierra Cossie.
Its very crucial and vital that I have one of these someday!! Such a cool car.
The wing or spoiler was known as a whale tale in the UK from my own experience. This was on the early Sierra Cosworth 3 door and the Escort Cosworth.
We started with a 1984 Sierra 1.6 , then a 1986 Sierra XR6 . Moved to the US and I bought a XR4TI, what a ugly Sierra compared to the European car. The RS500 and XR8 is both my dream cars.
I was one of them lads...flathead scuddy in the ignition barrel rip off the cowling snap steerin lock ❤ I'm 40 now and think little fuckers that do that are pure cunts.. 🤬
😂 good times 👍🏻
@@robocop3961 😉 👍🏻
Fair play to the owner for letting Hammond rag around in their rare D plate pre-production RS500🥹😨
I need the name of that outro track
I think it’s UNKLE - What have we done
I like so much this model. Together with the Giulia sedan they are my favourite all over between the sedans of that era . In general, however, an English or Italian one of the time gives me sensations and desires that are different from all the others
honestly that dog was GORGEOUS!
@ 2:20 that is false tho, The bmw e30 chassis is still the chassis that has won the most races in any class of motor racing with over 1400 wins
Hammond was probably referring to the Sierra as the most successful in percentage terms. I’d guess the BMW E30 has been entered in many, many more races than the Cossie since the mid-'80s.
The E30 that got put into category B like the mercedes because only the Sierra's were winning. Touring car racing wasn't only the DTM and unlike the DTM the British European and Australian touring car championships they didn't have 125hp and 400kg weight penalties on the sierra it blew everything else out of the water once de restricted. The fact BMW and Mercedes pushed the DTM to restrict the sierra speaks volumes.
My dreamcar back then !
Cossu Sierra, legenda
Some utter melt is on here claiming a Supra is worth more than a stock RS500 now. Im shocked hes not been thrown in jail. Have a scroll down and find the guy and let him know the RS500 engine blocks in mint condition is worth more than ANY supra. An Escort Cosworth in decent nick is twice as expensive as any Supra. Get rid of these silly American guys from this comment section they dont know anything about the RS500 they quote saph cosworth 4x4 prices and performance for an RS500 Cosworth its embarrassing.
Still a shame that cossies have become so expensive. 40 grand for the cheapest 2 door cossie here in Europe. But at the same time, it's a car that deserves that price tag. An absolute legend in rally and touring car racing and I still hope to own one in the near future without having to sell my kidney.
Cheers from Southern California 🇺🇸... I always liked the Real Version of this Car.. Euro Spec of course... The one we got here was.. not even close to it ... As a kid I seen.. Touring Car Racing.. noticed the Sierra COSWORTH... Epic... As far as.. Keyboard warrior talking about.. as more than likely.. doesn't own a Supra.. just reads post and likes Hip Hop too much.. I don't just live in Southern California.. I live in Orange County.. Folks have money here.. no I don't.. besides that, It's easy to see ... Name it... It's actually easier to tell you what we've not seen here.. my point.. for all the Legend, Myth, unreal tale's of 900hp-1,000hp blah blah.. etc.. Supra.. where?.. I've seen some parked.. hahaha
In South Africa 🇿🇦 ford fitted 5.0 V8 to their Sierra nicknamed THE ANIMAL for group racing
and it was humongously slower than this RS500 in racing
Legend. Like Escort RS after it.
Escort cosworth wasnt even close to the Sierra 2wd mate. RS500 was another level altogether hence why Escort cossie owners swapped out the lame later YB for the RS500 block and RWD. All you needed to do was shorten the prop shaft the escort was a saph 4x4 with a shell that Ford sent to carmen to get a bespoke Escort shell welded on go watch my mate Paul Linfoots vids on the subject.
That Moskvitch had an old Estonian licenseplate. And this episode was filmed in Estonia, on the old Raadi airport
This episode was filmed at RAF Greenham Common. Clarkson said it at the intro.
2:22 😂 dying of laughter

The realy Us Ford Muscles..💪💪💪💪💪
Nicked afew of them back in the day as a young teenager
...still got any kicking about?...
Thanks for ruining it 👍🏽
No way, it’s the starter car from Midnight Club II
My maths teacher had a Sierra Cosworth. He went to the shops, was in for less than 5 minutes and when he came out it had been stolen
Why doesn’t Hammond ever grip the steering wheel?
well today this prize got it Dogde (both) SRT - hellCat..... favorite cars of the stolers
This car would still beat a Mustang around the track, easily
Great video! Thanks for the memories. In the USA, I lusted after the Cosworth Sierra. We had the XR4ti. I had an 87 with a 5s manual mated to the Ford 2.3 turbo 4. Stock was 175hp. Decent, but not great. Enter Rapido Group. Borrowing from the Mustang SVO, they gave their customers access to: SVO engine upgrade kit. 230hp Borla exhaust Rear disc brake kit Upgraded suspension Cosworth Sierra look alike body kits. I went nuts and did it all. Bachelor in those days.😊 My friends thought I was nuts. Then I let them drive it. I went from nuts to genius. That car was a blast. Hammond was right abouth them attracting criminal attention. Mine was broken into twice, but not stolen, thanks to a hidden kill switch. Great car, fond memories.
Years later rapido is back😊
