Double Frankenbass!! Transforming a Fender Player Jaguar Bass and a Squier Affinity Precision Bass
Instead of selling all of my gear to buy one of the most expensive Precision Basses Fender makes, I decided to buy one of the _cheapest_ Precision Basses Squier makes, and take it apart.
I gave it the amazing neck from my Fender Player Jaguar Bass, a brand new Gotoh bridge, and the excellent stock pickups from both of my Squier 40th Anniversary basses… and this is the result.
But I didn't stop there. The true macabre experiment comes with putting the Squier Affinity Precision neck on the Jaguar and stringing it B-E-A-D with the lowest 4 strings from a 5-string set!
Watch if you dare!
Oh, also… there's an unboxing and first impressions of the Squier Affinity, and some late-breaking news regarding the new Fender Standard Series. Plus short performance clips by my band, 32nd Street Jazz, _and_ The Headhunters. (It all makes sense in context.)

On January 18, my band @32ndStJazz made our debut appearance at Berlin, the new-ish jazz club located in the North Loop neighborhood of Minneapolis. We had a great show, featuring a bunch of Herbie Hancock tunes, but we also did a couple of originals, including my song, "Hummus and Hot Sauce." It was ridiculously cold outside but the band brought the heat! Thanks to Mona, Mike and Brandon for d...
John Coltrane's A LOVE SUPREME live - premiere performance of my arrangement by 32nd Street Jazz

A couple of months ago, I got the rather crazy idea of arranging A Love Supreme - in its entirety - for my band, 32nd Street Jazz. Our friend Ben Hoehn, who is director of jazz bands at Shakopee High School in Shakopee, Minnesota, invited us to perform it as the guest artists for the school's winter jazz concert. Here's my previous video where I did a deep dive analysis of A Love Supreme and ho...

Here's a new concept for a UA-cam video: an instrument RE-boxing. If you've followed my hapless Fender bass saga on this channel, you'll know that Fender has disappointed me countless times over the years. And yet… I keep coming back. In this video, I look at the flaws I encountered with the Player Plus bass, how those flaws were _not_ improved with a Leo Quan so-called Badass bridge, and then ...

And you thought I was done with Fender! Well, I've had good luck with a couple of recent instruments, so as I'm trying to consolidate down my bass collection, I decided I don't need a Jazz Bass AND a 5-string bass when I can have a 5-string Jazz Bass. And so I decided with a special discount to give the Player Plus series a try. tl;dr It's good! *UPDATE: Maybe not so good. (Again!) Follow-up co...

Squier J Mascis Signature Jazzmaster Electric Guitar Unboxing Review… Wait, Me? A Guitar??
I own the Pro II Precision. It's perfectly balanced and very playable. But would I say it was worth the price difference over something like a Classic Vibe 60s? Absolutely not. The value for money ratio is way off. I think you made the right decision.
The only negative for me about the Classic Vibe series is the glossy necks. I never knew how much that mattered until I got a neck with a satin finish but now it’s a dealbreaker for me.
@@room34 Agreed. I sanded that thing down immediately.
I super support C clarinet making a comeback, and affordable being available. However, for your situation, maybe one of those fipple head joints for flute would’ve been the best solution? Then you could sound like a flute when the score calls for flute!
My problem wasn’t so much flute embouchure though as it was getting comfortable with the fingerings. This clarinet did the job when I needed it, but when I found myself playing in another pit that required flute six months later, I did take the time to work that out and actually play the parts on flute. (It helped that they were much easier flute parts!) As far as having the flute color in there… yeah, you’re right about that, but it also depends on the nature of the show. For the one I used this C clarinet in, there were five (!) reed books, and two of the others had most of the flute bits. For the show I actually played flute in, there were only two reed books and mine was the only one with flute.
For what it’s worth, I did end up swapping the knobs. I went with some nickel plated dome knobs fairly similar to standard P Bass knobs, but with set screws. They’re nicer than the stock Squier push-on knobs but keep the classic P Bass look.
Hey Scott. I am glad that you solved your bass dilemma and you are happy with the results so far. Maybe I should say at least for now. I really respect the fact that you went hands on with every part of the bass. even if it was in an area you are not strong in. Thanks for the example! I know that you are busy but when you have a moment I would like to ask you about fretless necks.
Thanks! Im not a fretless expert but I’ve owned a few (and my first “Frankenbass” project was a fretless). What’s your question?
@@room34 This not an easy question to ask so I will do my best. My Warwick thumb bass and my G&L SB2 have pickups that although different from each other, they both have a tone that is very rich with great depth. This is where my Jazz bass Frankestien build comes in. Cheap fretless Jazz bass with the idea of changing pickups that will bring similar richness and depth. This will bring down the brightness of the dual single coil pickups while using the Jazz body and neck that I like. I am looking for a bass with great dynamics and feel ; to me that is a fretless neck. Is this a good idea? All these words to ask a small question, thanks for you for your patience.
@claytonflanders5221 So if I understand correctly, you have a "Frankenstein" fretless Jazz Bass, and you're considering swapping the pickups, correct? That will definitely affect the tone - I really like the pickup in my G&L fretless - but it's also a fairly drastic step. You may want to try different strings (for example, I always play flatwounds), or changing where you place your right hand (e.g. playing right over the heel of the neck gives you more of an upright bass sound). I didn't really get at this in the video although the text overlay during the tone demos mentions it, but the pickup height matters a lot too. If you've got your pickups screwed all the way down, they'll be too far away from the strings and give you a weak tone. If they're too close to the strings, they'll overload - that's what happened to me in the tone demo. In doing all of this work, I forgot about carefully checking the height of the pickups. Ideally you should play the bass through a level meter (running into a DAW is a good way to do it) and make sure the output level is consistent across all four strings, on both pickups.
@@room34 I am afraid I have mislead you a bit. I do have a real nice fretless player series Jazz Bass, that I would like to keep stock at this time. I am going to make my frankenstien bass out of an affinity for i have never done mods before. My goal is to make a bass that is as expressive and melodic as I can build and play it.
@@claytonflanders5221 Hmm… so you're thinking of swapping a fretless neck onto the Affinity? That Frankenbass fretless I made a few years ago started out as a pair of Squier basses… I had a fretless Squier Vintage Modified Jazz Bass, but I wanted the Daphne blue color of the newer fretted Classic Vibe, so I bought the Classic Vibe, swapped the necks, and sold the "spare" bass comprised of the Vintage Modified's 3-tone sunburst body with the Classic Vibe's fretted neck. Eventually I "upgraded" to a stock Fender fretless neck (that cost more than the whole Squier bass!) and some DiMarzio pickups that were too deep to fit the CV body. I had to do some really unsightly work with a fat drill bit on the inside to deepen the cavities, not owning a router that could do the job properly. I was never happy with those compromises, so I ended up selling it. But as far as the neck is concerned: I was never happy with that either because you really do need to file the nut slots… the stock neck comes without any tuners, and with only small pilot slots cut into the nut. Also the edges of the fretboard were not rolled at all and I didn't like the sharp corners. So… that's why this time around I focused on reusing a neck that came from a production instrument and was one I already knew and really loved.
I really like this video! The demo sound quality really helped me figure out if I wanted one. Also, that song kicked ass.
@@magicmitch5000 Thanks… honestly I really did like the look and the sound of this bass, but it had a couple of deal-breaker issues that led me to return it. YMMV of course!
By the way, yes I need to do that little dance during the A section to stay in the groove for my little quasi-polymeter thing. (Note I'm only dancing like that on the F chord, because I don't do the polymeter on the other chords.)
Sounds like you bought a really shitty bass so that the rest of us don't have to. Thanks for being the guinea pig.
Way better without the pick guard.
I am glad that you can use a bass with a B string, This is something that throws me off, so I am in the works of setting up my five string strung E to C. Please let us know how the affinity neck with a B string works out for you?
I think the main issue will be whether or not the slots in the nut need to filed wider to accommodate the thicker strings. Good to experiment on a cheap neck!
The most recorded Basses in the world right now, according to the internet are all " Frankensteins". I am asking the same question myself only I want a Jazz Bass. Build it yourself and make it your own all the way around. This has become my reason to say " I need it ".
I like it. Now I’m just trying to decide between B and C. Yesterday I was strongly leaning B, but then I remembered the plan I floated in a recent video about setting up a 4-string BEAD. The Squier Affinity neck would be a good choice for that experiment.
Love the jam. Useful vid!
I did the same mod on my Mustang bass, very pleased with it, I like the look of the pickup covers too. Out of interest is that a Player(1) neck on yours? The yellow Player 2 comes with a rosewood fingerboard I believe & different Fender decal. Nice tunes. 👍
This is a Player I, but it’s a custom color from Sweetwater. They’re still selling these but they’re back to full price so I’m guessing they’re based on the Player II now. They don’t specify; they call it a “Special Edition.” This is Buttercream Yellow, not the Hialeah Yellow that’s a standard Player II option.
Ah, cool. I’m in the U.K. so Sweetwater is a thing of mystery to me. Bass looks great though, and obviously plays very well.
I dont hear to any bass solo. Specially not the pathetic Chambers bowed solos
Coltrane is my favorite jazz player, still, as soon as he starts making noises trying to communicate with God, I put the record away. I had enough of the american God. Thats why I dont hear Love Supreme and I learn by memory Soultrane or Blue Train
this is beautiful, thank you so much for doing this
I am a member of John Coltrane church since 2000 Santa Cruz and later Philmore.I played with most everyone in the bay area at Cafe Intl...and the various drum circles and events in the Bay.Coltrane is a Saint to be revered with Bob Marley and Louis Armstrong...who would have thought of such compositions of free jazz and how that shapes music for all time!?
Great video-and great playing! 🙌🏽
Thanks! Truly an honor to hear that from you!
Come on give it another chance!
Danelectro first made the bass VI in the 1950 and the BEADGC 6 string bass came before the BEADG 5 string bass but in the 1960’s Fender made a 5 string bass tuned EADGC but only had 15 frets.
So far, my MIM basses have been higher quality, less noise and electronic issues. My USA basses (USA ULTRA JAZZ 5, and my Tony Franklin fretless) both had to be sent back and replaced because of bad pickups. I still love them both but for the money, you'd think the quality would be higher
That's been my real struggle with recent Fenders… I know the differences in labor costs are a factor, but considering the price difference between MIM and USA, you'd at least expect the USA instruments to come out of the factory without these obvious flaws.
I just got this same bass. I’m loving it but really needs a set up. It looks great!
Amazing arrangement
Great review and video! I have serious GAS for one of these now.
Get it! Seriously, I've gone through a lot of basses over the past couple of years and I am ridiculously nitpicky. This might be the only one that I actually like more each time I pick it up. Fretless is still something I only play "as needed" but if that wasn't the case this would probably be my main bass.
@@room34 Good to know, and it's cool that you held onto it! I already have a fretted USA L-2000 that is a wonderful beast of a bass so this will be a great match for it. The sounds you got in the video were huge. Thanks, man! I emailed my sales guy a little while ago. LOL
Came for the bridge. Stayed to jam with you. Nice song.
the real bass
Was looking at this bass. Your video took me off it. I knew it didn't have an active/passive possibility; but, you would think Schecter might add that in their next run. I'm also not a fan of gold hardware. They should have done the tuners, bridge and control knobs in black. A cleaner look. Good luck
Ha, and this isn’t even the video where I got into the bass’s problems! The battery compartment is a nightmare. Not only do you need a screwdriver to open it, you have to pry the batteries out. With no passive option, this bass is a total no-go for live performance. I also found mine had (I hope) faulty wiring on the pan pot. I ended up returning it not long after I made this video. It’s a shame, because there were actually a lot of things I did like about the bass, but I couldn’t live with those issues.
I'm way late to this video, but any chance someone knows how to order just this neck. I have a fretted Kiloton Tribute that is almost never played, and would like to try this fretless version. Thanks!
I doubt it's easy to get ahold of the neck by itself. You'd probably be better off just selling the one you have and buying the whole instrument.
Has the Arturia mini lab 3 got its own speaker or do you need to connect to something else?
It’s just a MIDI controller. No speakers and no built-in sounds. It has to connect to another MIDI device that produces sound or, probably more commonly the way I use it, with a DAW and software instruments.
Nice-looking bass. As someone who has been out of the wind instrument game for a long time: What's the wind instrument called that you're playing on your (very cool) rendition of "Maiden Voyage"?
Thanks for checking it out! That instrument is an AKAI EWI (Electronic Wind Instrument). This is the USB version that’s basically just a MIDI controller - no built-in sounds. I got it mainly because it’s a successor to what Michael Brecker played in the ‘80s and ‘90s. It’s actually kind of a pain to play because the keys don’t move; they’re capacitive touch sensors. So if you accidentally touch one, even with the side of your finger, it changes which note you’re playing. I’ve heard the Roland Aerophone is a better wind controller but I’m too invested in this one to bother with anything else now!
@@room34 Thanks for the reply. Does the mouthpiece work like it does on a saxophone or is it its own thing? Thanks.
@@Johannes_Tube It’s rubber. You blow into it, but there’s no reed and there’s more resistance than a sax mouthpiece. You can also bite on it to bend the pitch.
there are a couple long bts videos of the sweetwater setup, it’s super interesting. i think there are six photo room, worth checking out
People In Taiwan are Chinese and the real official name of Taiwan is Republic of China. And the full name of China is People’s republic of China. Both are China , Taiwan is democratic China.
I’m aware of that, but as far as product labeling on items sold in the US goes, “Made in China” typically means mainland China, and if it’s made in Taiwan it will say Taiwan or sometimes Taiwan R.O.C. Of course I just bought a new MIM Fender that says “Made in Ensenada” on the headstock so I don’t really think the labeling is regulated the way it (presumably) used to be. I guess my head is still stuck on what I remember seeing on toys back in the ‘80s. But I also know the government of the People’s Republic of China is sensitive about international acknowledgement of Taiwan/Republic of China as a separate entity, and that’s what I was getting at.
Try a FGN bass. I love mine.
Thanks for the video. String spacing on the Player Mustang is 17mm, spacing on the high mass bridge is 19mm. Was that not a problem? To my eye the E and G strings look thrown a little to close too the edge of the neck (which I would not like). Thanks.
I didn’t measure but are you sure about that? The stock bridge I took off the Mustang is identically sized to the bridge I had laying around from a Squier Jazz. I’m not having any issues with the E and G strings when I play it.
@@room34 Actually, the specs from the Fender on the Mustang Bass is not exact. I just put a micrometer on both a Fender Am Jazz bass, a Player II Mustang, and on the actual bridge, they all spec at 19mm.
Yeah… I was cleaning out my studio space the other day and I dug out these bridges. I didn’t measure them but I put the stock Player Mustang bridge and the Squier Jazz bridge up against each other and they’re identical. I wouldn’t be surprised if the traditional Mustang bridge is 17 mm but it does seem like the Player series deliberately uses stock Precision/Jazz specs for the bridge and pickups to make them easier to mod. (Or just cheaper/easier to produce.)
Yo scott, any austenitic steel (tends to be stainless) to which you add nickel will not be magnetic. Also, try that non magnetic bridge on your basses with magnetic bridges. Wether it is or isn't magnetic is typically intentional and a way to make the tuning of the bass more focused or less focused (essentially if the bridge is magnetic, the fields of the bridge will extend to the strings and make the magnetic glux disruptions easier to pick up by the pickups.
20:40 wow that was a surprise❤
What a great listen! Also love the music cave setup where this was all recorded. New MN state flag for the win!
To prevent gouging on a rosewood neck with rounds, you can have your luthier put cyanoacrylate (super glue) on it and polish it. It provides a super hard surface (and shiny!) that protects the wood.
If you get an ebony fretless fretboard, round wounds won't chew it up. You will get slight scratches, but that's it.
Very underrated instrument!
awesome video and analysis. going to get me back into deeply listening to this record again.
The "Dublin delay" & the Edge pops up is amusing. And yes i am a happy player of the JMJM. Great bang for your buck.
Hey I have a 1991 BB1100S. It's quirky, the split coil has far hotter output than the bridge single coil, and the actives are quite extreme. I love it dearly having owned it from new. It plays very well.
Amazing job man for doing this beautiful piece of art.
I watched the video and read your article. I'm a bass builder and repair tech. I'd be willing to bet that you have either a loose fret or a high fret (or several). I can't tell you how many times I had to level high frets on American fenders coming straight out of the factory. Also, probably 5 or 6 times I've experienced a loose fret that had popped up out of the slot (very slightly but enough to cause strings to hit and buzz). If you really want to get your action as low as possible and eliminate fret buzz, do a fret level and recrown....factories do NOT do this even on an instrument as expensive as a Fender Ultra series. If there is a loose fret, that's when you'll find it. Hope this helps and feel free to hit me back if you have any questions.
Possible, but I don't think that was it. Anyway it doesn't matter because I sold this bass a year and a half ago and replaced it with… wait for it… a Squier 40th Anniversary that was 1/5 the price. I still have the Squier and am quite happy with it as a backup bass, even though it _does_ have a loose fret. I'll get around to fixing it eventually. But it's only causing a little bit of buzz on a couple of notes on the G string, and I'm still able to set the action the way I want it. Never managed to do that with the Ultra. Here's the follow-up: ua-cam.com/video/_Wls0u35MCY/v-deo.html
Thank you for sharing this with the world!
I can honestly guarantee you’d have a much better time with production instruments - even ones made in the far east - if you move away from Fender and their sister/former sister companies. Fender’s QC across the board has been terrible for a while now. Lakland Skyline, Sadowsky MetroExpress & Sandberg Elektra (in order of preference) are 3 ‘budget’ far east produced lines from Bass companies that have expensive US (or German in Sandberg’s case) made instruments but their budget line is often as good or better than US Fenders and absolutely blows MIM Fender’s out of the water. A used Lakland Skyline you’ll get for 3 figures and I guarantee you won’t look back! Consolidate several of those basses into 1 x 44/64 Skyline (P / PJ) or 1 x Skyline 44/60 (JB) and a whole new world of quality will open up to you
You would think that… and yet the only instruments that have actually had *serious* issues - like, cut out in the middle of a gig issues - were a Schecter and a Sire. I have been considering both Sadowsky and Lakland though. Perhaps that will be my New Year's resolution.
@ Lakland Skyline (used particularly) are the best value for money basses out there at the moment - all IMO of course! The QC is fantastic, they’re made in Indonesia but still got through a final QC in the US, some of them are even Plekked now, which means you can get the action ridiculously low, stock electronics are really good and they’re some of the best necks you’ll play. I know exactly how you feel with regards to QC issues etc as described in the vid and moving over to the Skylines was a revelation for me
My guitars are #1 JMJ Mustang with flats stock, #2 American Standard P also with flats and stock, #3 Telecaster Deluxe Reissue heavily modded wiring, #4 Mikey Way Signature Squire mustang with a Nordstrand pickup strung as the high side of a bass vi, #5 old affinity Squier Tele in Nashville tuning fitted with Wilkinson pickups and bridge.
But I like selfmixing basses
My Am Pro II P Bass has a contoured heel where the neck screws on. I noticed that your bass didn’t. Was that a choice or just the way that they come from the Mod Shop? Thanks for the great detailed video.
Just the way they come from the Mod Shop. Maybe the Mod Shop is still using Am Pro parts instead of Am Pro II. 🤷♂️
Thanks!

Very good and clear analyses of the album
