Path to Zero Podcast: Rethinking Infrastructure for a Low-Carbon World with SIP's David Gilford
In this special edition of Path to Zero, host Tucker Perkins takes us to Climate Week in New York City for a fascinating conversation with David Gilford, Head of Policy and Strategic Partnerships at Sidewalk Infrastructure Partners (SIP). From the Techonomy Climate event at City Winery, the episode dives deep into how SIP is revolutionizing infrastructure with cutting-edge technology and creative capital.
Before joining SIP, Gilford was Principal at HR&A Advisors and co-founder of the Broadband Equity Partnership. Before that, he co-founded the Connected Communities practice at Intersection, developing technology strategies for neighborhood-scale real estate developments. He also served as Vice President for Urban Innovation & Sustainability for the New York City Economic Development Corporation.
What is Infrastructure?
David Gilford opens the conversation by redefining infrastructure as the systems that enable society to function-spanning from roads and bridges to wireless networks and software. SIP emerged as an innovative response to the outdated infrastructure landscape, bridging the gap between traditional infrastructure investment and the rapid innovation seen in venture capital.
Originally part of Alphabet (Google’s parent company), SIP spun out five years ago to pursue independent funding and partnerships, tapping into global investors like the Ontario Pension Plan. With a mission to modernize infrastructure for sustainability and resilience, SIP blends policy, technology, and capital to address the complex challenges of the 21st century.
Key Projects Transforming the Landscape
1. Renew Home: SIP’s groundbreaking virtual power plant initiative merges Google Nest’s energy assets with OhmConnect, optimizing energy use in hundreds of thousands of households. The program integrates smart thermostats, electric vehicle chargers, and heat pumps to balance grid demands, saving billions of dollars while significantly reducing carbon emissions.
2. Verrus: SIP’s new venture focuses on flexible, energy-efficient data centers. With demand for data skyrocketing, Verrus integrates microgrids and storage solutions, turning data centers into adaptive energy consumers. This approach supports grid reliability, renewable energy adoption, and sustainable industrial development.
3. Scaling Urban Infrastructure: At Governors Island in New York, SIP is exploring how innovative infrastructure solutions can address climate resilience. By using the island as a testbed, SIP aims to scale impactful technologies while balancing the needs of local communities and long-term urban planning.
David Gilford’s Unique Perspective
Drawing from a career spanning public and private sectors, including leadership roles at the NYC Economic Development Corporation and the Broadband Equity Partnership, Gilford brings a nuanced understanding of infrastructure challenges. His ability to navigate policy complexities and align stakeholders has been critical in advancing SIP’s mission.
Looking Ahead
David emphasizes the collaborative nature of SIP’s work, highlighting partnerships with nonprofits, municipalities, and private stakeholders. As climate and economic challenges converge, SIP is committed to transforming infrastructure into a driver of resilience and sustainability.

Love the music. I used 2 small portable dual fuel 2500wt Champion propane generators together with their parallel kit for Francine few months ago. Quieter than gas generators, no waiting in line at gas station to fill multiple gas tanks-that does it for me. Paid right at $500 each and worth it. Take up little room, light and easy to carry. Love 'em.

Even including storage and transport costs SOLAR POWER IS NOW MUCH CHEAPER THAN propane, nuclear, and even coal, EVEN IN NORTHERN EUROPE, much less sunnier climates. There is little reason to ever make new fossil fuel burners except for things like making plastics and chemicals at this point. And solar and energy storage CONTINUE TO GET CHEAPER.

Ummm.... Even if you use by products of waist... It still pollutes carbon into the atmosphere (if you didn't know. Is one of the main gasses heating up our atmosphere and is created when something BURNS, A.K.A. ON FIRE).. the only thing you could say is that it's better then Natural Gas as it produces Methane (which has a half life in the centeries, instead of carbon, which is decades). This is as misleading as the recycling movement in America.. how about actually using recycled materials to make renewable resources like wind turbines, hydro turbines, and passive radioactive energy plants instead of the active radiation plants we have today that creates waist, Or actually upgrading our batteries that can be made from recycled materials (like the Iron Air battery that can power a family home for a max of 5 days, or the Radioactive diamonds that can produce power that is expected to be used up to 10,000 years without a charge) These are just some of the many things that can actually be used to save the planet instead of some marketing scheme that I only would expect a multi level marketing scheme would pull... So please stop saying it's "environmentally beneficial" and "will not add any more carbon to the atmosphere" if it burns, there will be carbon... Please retake high school chemistry before y'all get sued.. because it's really tempting... Good luck on the lies!!🎉😂
