As a lifelong Saskatchewan resident, I must mention that the word "snowstorm" seems new to the lexicon. We refer to heavy snow with strong winds as a "BLIZZARD". I've never heard anyone say "It's snowstorming outside" or "there's a snowstorm coming". Rather, it's blizzarding outside, there's a blizzard forecast, we had a blizzard etc...
