Welcome to my UA-cam channel. I'm Michael Nesi and and I've had the great fortune to study with a lot of amazing drummers over the years. I wanted to create a community where I can not only share things passed on to me but also my own ideas. Since I was young, I have taken musical assignments well beyond what was asked of me. A simple assignment in many cases has turned into lifelong pursuits, for example I have hundreds of Alan Dawson like systems that I have developed to assist me in learning a particular topic or area and I think these may also be found useful to others.

I am using the top line across exercise 5 and 6 in Ted Reed’s Syncopation. I will write how this is interpreted in a pdf if anyone is interested, comment below. With this system the 1/4 notes are considered half notes therefore each single measure is two. A long note equates to the full Jazz ride pattern straight, 3 notes. Snare and bass play along with long short divided between the snare and ...

Thanks for watching, I have a brush version of this groove as well.

👍
It's Riley's take on a Bill Stewart 7-note phrase. Stewart's uses a bass drum on the 7th note where John uses a double left. I've also heard Stewart phrase it inside of triplets which really messes with the perception of the evenness of the triplets. I also have done it over triplets as an eight-note phrase by adding another bass drum note. It can get very interesting if you play it alternating with a seven-note followed by an eight-note phrase in triplets or vice-versa. Don't get hung up in the math. Just feel the quarter-note pulse and keep the 2&4 in the hat and improvise something on whatever leftover beats you have whether you're doing a 2 bar phrase or four bar phrase overall. And learning these as eighth-note and triplet phrases is great for expanding vocabulary.
Congratulations!!! Excellent!!!!👏👏👏👏🥁🥁🥁
Thanks very much, hope all is well!

left hand plays exercise five and six top line, right hand plays a swing beat, hihat plays through quarter notes
The ride pattern varies based on long and short notes.
i also think you have a wonderful channel. your drum sounds great. i have syncopation exercise five and six the top line but i don't quite understand what you are playing.
Thank you! I added an explanation in the comments. I will write something up I have just not gotten to it. Let me know if that helps. Work on just the ride concept first before adding the other limbs, then 2/4 on high hat, than snare bass drum once comfortable.
Smooth!

journey to gaining left foot independence
One of the first things I did was reverse the limbs in Chapin's book. In the section where bass drum is notated, play four quarters on the bass drum, and the notated bass drum parts on the hi hat. Also, Jazz Ride, second and third notes of the triplet every beat on snare, then walk the feet reading syncopation, Jazz notation).

Bernard is an awesome player. Every time he plays he’s happy like Jo Jones. In a world of ten second TikTok fast double bass clips while juggling chain saws, it’s nice to see actual useful drumming.

could provide a bit of context of what is going on? would love to learn this exercise
I will add more details and a pdf to help. Essentially I developed exercises to play any accents patterns within paradiddles.
Would be grateful to see the exercises you developed. I’ve got as far as trying to play groupings of 3 4 5 etc within a double stroke roll. perhaps I could just use Ted Reed synco exercises to develop it further…thx for inspiration
@@grantallardyce5282 Write out the notation for a couple of measures, if dealing with 5, 7, I usually go until it resolves. I then put the sticking underneath, for example if a paradiddle in 1/8 note triplets is the target sticking. Then put the accents on top and see where it lands in he sticking. For Jazz notation I start with down beats, practice that in the sticking, then up beats, then consecutive 1/8 notes (shuffle). Hope this helps.

Hi! When playing the accents or toms for 1/16ths do you play as a double stroke or single stroke? Enjoying your content too 👍
Hello thank you for watching! I am playing doubles but the right hand doubles are being split between the floor tom and snare. I love split doubles. The left hand is accenting the first note of the double, the articulation makes it sound like more than what it is.
@michaelnesi0827 that's great insight thank you
Always a pleasure watching and listening. Bravo, Nesi!

Can you do the Art Blakey rim shot phrase next? Using the rim-shot, he produced different notes, usually did that during outros. An example is "Mission Eternal" by Cedar Walton, in the album "Buhaina" by the Jazz Messengers.
I will check out the tune for sure.
I love your videos! So many cool ideas and phrases! What if you did something with one of the exercises from "Dave Tough's Advanced Paradiddle Exercises"?
@@EthanNistor I was just speaking about that book with someone. It is really great the way he moves the diddle to accommodate where he wants the accent, also the rate changes, great book. I will do something for sure.

No problem mate, your creativity is wild! I've transcribed a few of your exercises and played some of it for my drums exam at music school! It's great I love your stuff! Of course, I gave you credit and also showed my drum teacher your videos! Can't wait for some Dave Tough!😃
@@EthanNistor thank you very much that is awesome!
Just fell in love
Can anyone tell why the snare "a's" in the triplets don't line up with the "a's" in the hi hat in advanced techniques for the modern drummer
Do you mean the top line, Ride Cymbal pattern? If so the ride pattern is written in 16th notes throughout the book. I remember Dom once telling me something about why that was but I don't recall. I studied with Jim but was too young to ask.
@@michaelnesi0827 Thanks for your reply. Do the a's of triplets land at the same time as a's of 16ths?
@@alanross2876 No it would be a 4 against 3 polyrhythm. Pass the Bread and Bu tter is a good mnemonic to help. Pass both hit at the same time. The is the second not of the 16, the is the second not of the triplet, and is the third note of the 16th, first syllable of butter is the third note of the triplet, and the second is the final note of the 16th.
Say that and play the three side on the left hand, 4 on the right, then reverse.
The triplet sections in Jim's book, play the ride as triplets. Mixed rate exercises, I change the ride when triplets are encountered, and also try and stay true to the book as written.
Sounds so good! Loved your ride as well.
Thank you! I have been using these Istanbul 30th Anniversary cymbals for a while now I really love them and can't seem to switch them out. Although for rehearsals I have been using my K Kerope cymbals which I am really liking more and more as well! Thanks for watching!

@@jigthepuff4540 thank you!
I’m gonna need some toast for that tasty jam!
lol, thanks!
This one was actually very tricky for me, beyond the orchestration. The phrase is in 3/4 essentially, two times through each version I count it in 6/4. I am going to add a pdf for the math.
@@michaelnesi0827 Either way I really enjoy your channel. I watch how your hands move around the set to give me some ideas. I really need to bite the bullet and get a bebop set to drop my Tom down. But I only play for fun. Remember the first time you played on a drum set you felt that magic? That’s me every time I get on them.
