@woodlist It may and will, but then you are limited to the exact size of your tool. This can cut any shape that you want, without buying more tooling.

First timers jump back, the first time they see it move. This thing is fast. @Woodlist, sure if you are making 1,000's. Other wise what's the point in investing in the tools? It will beat a turret punch press if that is what you mean. .

Spacesonic Inc. Has the first machine of this kind in the U.S.A. based in San Carlos California, it is married up to a load and unload cell that has 5 shelves, 3 ton capacity per shelf. It can cut 22 ga. to 5/8 plate automatically and .001 shim to 1.000 plate manually. Can cut 3/4 amour plate. Can cut 900 .100 diameter holes on .156 centers in .020 stainless steel, per minute.

I saw this program (or very similar) run at IMTS 2006, it is largely highlighting the rapid traverse speeds and very high acceleration rates that the the linear-motor drives offer. Also, notice the Z-axis lifting high above the sheet at times. As mentioned, heat buildup is also a concern. This display is being cut into very thin material. Localized heat introduction will distort the sheet and cause features to be shifted out of place once the material cools.

The machine is moving between holes to prevent too much heat from building up in one place. This is an Amada demonstration and most of the geometry the machine is cutting are not simple round holes. The machine is really impressive in person.

I think it's to demonstrate how fast the head moves in between cuts
