"The Great Transformation in the Middle East and Africa: Globalization, (In)formal Markets and the Politics of Identity"
CM Fall 2022 Lecture Series
Wednesday, October 19, 2022, 4:45 p.m. - 6:15 p.m.
Goldwin Smith Hall, Kaufmann Auditorium, G64
Understanding the political and socio-economic factors which give rise to youth recruitment into militant organizations is central to grasping some of the most important issues that affect the contemporary Middle East and Africa. This lecture is structured around salient themes of Prof. Medani's important study, Black Markets and Militants: Informal Networks in the Middle East and Africa (Cambridge UP, 2021), which examines the relationship among economic globalization, informal financial, housing and labor markets, and the emergence and evolution of Islamist and ethnic politics in Sudan, Egypt and Somalia.
Khalid Mustafa Medani is associate professor of political science and Islamic Studies and Chair of the African Studies Program at McGill University. He received a B.A. from Brown University, an M.A. from Georgetown University, and an M.A. and Ph.D. in Political Science from the University of California, Berkeley. His most recent book, Black Markets and Militants: Informal Networks in the Middle East and Africa, was just recognized by the American Political Science Association for their 2022 award for Best Book on MENA politics by a senior scholar.

at 59:33 interesting talk about history methodology. It so reminded me of the terrific Irving Finked of the British Museum. One of his projects is Rescuing unwanted diaries! A Lecture by Irving Finkel. So, you should stream it. His voice is...well, go! <ua-cam.com/video/X0hi2Q3TAK8/v-deo.html> A bit from the description of the stream: "Be prepared for a passionate appeal to preserve diaries for future readers and learn how you can contribute to our understanding of the past."

I would argue that conditions in China are being determined by the world in which China exists. The vast majority of the planet lives in a world dominated by the capitalist mode of production - the socialized nature of production and the private expropriation of wealth. China for 1.) New that it could not build Socialism in poverty, and 2.) Was forced to adapt, in order to increase productive forces, socialize production, and enrich itself with the ultimate goal being to wait out the change that is coming, and build a better society for the Chinese People.

We must tell our Liberal friends, who hold up the works of Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn, that this man was a Fascist Sympathizer; and if that's any indication of how principled he was, or signals to us how little he valued truth, then we need to point this out to everyone who throws fictional works like "The Gulag Archipelago" into our faces.

The people won't follow. It's class struggle. The ruling class must be overthrown and socialism will be established. If you have interest in socialism, what have you done till now to support the cause????? You just want to "follow". Today you are follower of capitalist system. Tomorrow you will remain a follower but the system will change. I think you are used to be the cattle, who has to be driven.

A brilliant economist wrote about the writing of other economists: the memorable economists purposely used a style that was difficult to understand in order to raise the commitment of their followers. Having had to invest decades to try to understand their master's work, members of the school cannot easily one day decide it is all wrong. They would be tossing their years into the trash bin. How contrary to the example of the early 20th century mathematician, Gothold Frege! When young Bertrand Russell based a paradox on Frege's logic, Frege quickly acknowledged the problem, though it went to the heart of his work.

No system has ever worked because it's base has always been capitalist (including communism), that is, based on money. As long as someone can get money by killing, selling drugs, trafficking in people and others courtesies, there will be no social justice. We should end money as we know it, redefine it, reinvent it. How? Making it free, why not? Today the technology to do it is available, a virtual money like in a mobile game or app, of course, why not? That it reaches everyone, without exception, that would equal us all. And so that people do not steal, kill, traffic, etc..? For this it is necessary that this virtual money is non-transferable, that is, that there can not be money exchange between two people. If I go to a store and buy something, the money the product costs is deducted from my virtual purse and disappears, it does not end up in the virtual purse of the grocer or anyone else. Each one receives a salary to do his work. In this way, killing to get rich would not exist. How would a gangster pay his hitmen? He could not. How to make people work and not live from unemployment? By making a monthly payment for workers and a lower monthly payment for the unemployers, workers will have a higher quality of life. Free housing, education and health, work 3 days a week, guaranteed retirement. Want to know more? it worked so badly in Russia that within 30 years it had changed from a feudal agrarian country to a world superpower that defeated the Nazis, while providing free healthcare and education and a daily per capita caloric intake higher than the US. it worked so badly in Cuba that a small band of Guerillas overthrew a US backed dictator and provided free healthcare and education to its peasant population, and now trains more doctors per capita than anywhere else on the world all while under strict blockades by the US. it worked so badly in DPRK that after having more bombs dropped on its soil in the Korean War than all of WW2 combined, along with the US deliberately targetting its agricultural ability and claiming that it could not be self-sufficient, it has managed to survive and thrive economically, posing a threat to the US it worked so badly in China where like Russia it was able to rapidly industrialise, doubling the life expectancy of its people, before continuing to raise 800 million people out of poverty and setting it on track to eradicate poverty by 2021 and surpass the US's economy in the coming decades. Capitalism on the other hand will lead the earth into climate catastrophe, and if you remove China's 800 million, the flat number of people living in poverty has increased in the last 30 years.
