It has nothing to do with being fair or unfair. The Mercator projection has more realistic sizes for all countries near the equator. All countries near the north and south poles are stretched due to the nature of the projection. It is not possible to perfectly project a 3D object (like a globe) into a 2D surface (a map).

It's not wrong, it's being used incorrectly. People don't understand what those Mercator projection maps are for or how to interpret them. All flat maps are 'wrong' because you can't accurately depict the surface of a sphere on a plane without some manipulation.

Of course it required some artistic freedom but still the best flat depiction of the continents I have seen. What suffered was the oceans, the distances were very much off.

I wanted to stack multiple scanned png maps of the same area and having the exact same dimensions, the more georeferece all of them as one single file then later export each individual map as a georefereced geotiff file instead of georeferencing each map one by one
