FileMaker global fields - how and when to use them | Beginner Tutorial | FileMaker For You
FileMaker global fields are incredibly useful -- but only if you know how and when to use them. Global fields can be used to store a logo, tax rate, commission percentage, department account code or username, to name a few of the many possibilities.
In this FileMaker tutorial, I show you two ways you can think about global fields so that you have a stronger understanding of how you can put them to good use. You'll also learn about one case when it is not a good idea to use a global field.
You'll also be shown several examples of FileMaker global fields in action including: improving your user interface, creating an Excel report for accounting and building a user login screen.

Perfect, just what I needed!
Can you also show what type of data is in field Month year
Wasted half hour trying to find the relatively simple answer before I got to your video. Took another 2:16 to solve my problem. Thank you.
Thankkkk youuuuuuu
How to export tables into separate worksheets under same file.
Very helpfull however it took me a while to figure out that you have to 'click out' in order for FM to run the script in the Hide Object. Is there a way to run that Hide Object script when tabbing to the next field?
Could you show how to enter the data from the contract entry table to the actual database. Maybe show multiple tables which are related. Showing some data verification along the way would be supper helpful.
Could you make a vid showing how to move the records from the entry screen to the proper tables in the database?
Thank you too much
nice, short and clear
How did you get column names on the File -> Export version, please?
great video, you saved me! Is there a way to have a different background image for each record?
excellent just what i wanted.
Very nicely done!
Very clear to understand :) Yea!!
wonderfully clear, thanks
Quick video but useful. Thanks
Thank you - very helpful.
I like your videos..keep posting please
Hi, I need help :) I have a simple filmmaker budget database for the whole year with incomes fields, week, days, expenses and some other fields....my question is: is there a way to find the data only for specific week (lets say week 3 )? from Quick find I tried but I get no results and it shows all the data from beginning of the year! Am I clear enough? I need just to get the information for specific week P.S. I have also created a field for week number in the main layout and also in preview layout. Thank you :)
you are the best.... thankyou
Excellent video that is tremendously helpful. Thanks for taking the time to make the world a better place!
Thanks...watching this video gave me idea how to omit top 10 records and award them position in my school database...really would like to say...English people when learn some thing they share it with others...and our people when learn some thing they dont share cause they think we will steal their knowledge.....sorry if my statement offends anyone...but truth is bitter
Is it possible to implement a top ten list using a subsummary with subsummary inside that. ie top 10 producing products in a category showing total sales
THANKS
Thank you for the useful info. Also can you please explain how to create a related fields?
Excelent, waht a teacher!!
Anyway to do this on a 30 , 60 , 90 day range?
One addition note is that the calculation field needs to be have it's calculation result set as date.
Thank you for the great idea. I added a checkbox field next to the duplicate flag, called "HideDuplicate". I use a different field name than you, but I essentially hide the checkbox field using the following Calc, "Count ( Patients NameLast::NameFirst) ≤ 1". I then hide the Red duplicate warning with "Count ( Patients NameLast::NameFirst) ≤ 1 or Patients::HideDuplicate = 1" The "HideDuplicate" field is set to be a checkbox with a value of 1. I do this, because I would imagine that you may want to hide the warning occasionally for a common name like Robert Smith or José Garcia, that is actually not a duplicate.
how to save the find in a variable and use it later?
This helped, but how did you create a related field?!! I was kinda hoping you'd show how to do that too.
thanks for the explanation. for me was not very clear how to allow or block related field
very useful!!! Grazie ;)
Nice simple explanation between Lookup and Related! Any tips if I actually want the field to be related?
Thank you!
How do set up a script to do this?
I think you need Global fields to capture what you want to search and use them in the script.
update: it does work but not for finding records that do not have a related record in another table
does not work
Great! Concisely answered my question after watching videos about each type, where authors neglected to mention the differences. It is a very fine point, especially since there are connections made on the tables tab in both types of situations (Lookup and Related Fields)
bless you this saved me
This isn't responsive design. It just makes the elements stretch as your window expands/contracts. Responsive design means this and so much more. It means reflowing of objects based on screen dimensions. For example, viewing your layouts on a phone in portrait mode would either shrink your elements so small to see, or require a lot of scrolling across. A truly responsive design (which Filemaker and Web Direct does not support yet), would mean that you could render specific objects in different positions on your layout (such as a table reading across for a row, to a row reading vertically).
Here's a starting point: www.smashingmagazine.com/2011/01/guidelines-for-responsive-web-design/
Thanks for this
Thank you...
Great info ... Thanks!
Thank you! This was super helpful - I really appreciate you taking the time to make this video!
Fantastic hack, thank you
Thank you for this - it was a quick and easy implementation which really helped me on a project!
Oh forgot to say that I found your video very informative. :-)
How do you set the container field so that you can open a image file with mspaint or other image viewer program?
