North Raleigh Model Railroad Club T-TRAK Expo at Neuse River Valley Train Show November 2023
We have a member (RANTRAK) who has setup an n scale, I think it is a "daylight Sopac. locomotive that is battery powered. It's seems to have a 2 hour run time.
Comment was made about disc golf. Maybe someone on Discgolfcoursereview forums might have a lead for nscale disc golf baskets. Dunno
When setting up a layout with modules from various people, is there a specific type that are always in short supply? Too many corners not enough straights, or vice versa? I'm thining about building something in free-mon...
It varies from event to event
I attended the N Scale Weekend in Altoona, my first N scale event. I modeled in N scale back in the '80s, but then went to larger scales. Now that we are planning on downsizing N scale has regained it's appeal to me. I joined NRail shortly afterwards getting a tip from someone with the Iron City T-Trak group. Thank you for the great information in the video. I will be going back and viewing previous videos.
I disagree with the point about insulated joiners not being level with the tops of the rails (at 15:02 "AR1 Tips"); it could cause issues. The reverser does not rely on the wheels bridging the gap to cause the phase short. While this can and does happen, it isn't a requirement to trip the reverser. The gap will be bridged electrically by the conductive footprint of the locomotive. Generally, there are wipers on all wheels on the loco for better pickup of power. One wheel will be in the reversing section while one will still be out of it, this is sufficient to trip the reverser. By having metal wheels bridge the gap, the reverser could wind up fighting itself if trains are running over both sets of gaps. If a locomotive is leaving the reversing section and another is entering it, the metal wheels of the entering train can bridge the gap while the loco, set of metal wheels, or a lighted car is bridging the exit gaps. The reverser will fight itself and cutout for a second or two. The train will start moving again, but only until the next set of metal wheels bridges the gap. I see no adverse effect from filling the gap. Worse case, if you have only one axle on a loco picking up power, the reverser wouldn't trip, but it wouldn't have to in that case. The reverser is only there to address the situation of a short occuring. If there isn't a short, it doesn't matter, the loco will happily keep going. @steve_larson mentions using the the dual frog juicer as a reverser thus avoiding the fighting gaps. Haven't tried it myself.
I originally installed the AR1 on my reverse loop, but the loop was too short and my lighted passenger cars would make it cut out if the train was longer than the loop. After about 6 months it quit working, no matter where I set the pot. It was totally my fault since I love long passenger trains and was probably faulting out 10 times a day. I have since been using Tam Valley frog juicers. You can pair outputs for Y's and reverse loops. I'm currently using the dual model to run the reverse loop on my Atlas code 65 sectional layout, and the Hex frog juicer for frogs on my C55 layout. A neat extra is that the dual output model has LED outputs to run signals. The longer passenger trains (longer than the reverse loop) don't seem to be a problem for the Dual Juicer. They switch so fast that they can change states in-between wheels, so it just flashes red/green on the PCB really fast but doesn't fault out and everything runs smoothly.

Good catch! We thought the QR code at the end would do the trick. But you can never have enough tracks to the Roundhouse! The following link we also added to the description. Seeya on the NRail Train! nrail.org/join-us

Very cool presentation about high speed rail.
A fitting tribute to the late Tony DeMasi. Well done NRMRC.
My three modules, my NASCAR race car train and the George Hughes memorial hopper train - all donated to RANTRAK - were on display in this layout. Many thanks. 8:41
Great work and cool events Greetings from Poland (EU),...
Nice presentation about high speed rail .. too bad we are broke as a country ...
Amtrak need to be broken up and more companies like Brightline funded with the money
RANTRAK & RAT-TRAK from Richmond Area NRail loved plugging into the NRail50 festivities in 2023.
@donwhead thanks for giving such a great review! We agree that Speed is a wizard of providing the practical foundational details that educates the novice and leads to success. His Arduino chapter in this episode has its own embedded link that should be shared and viewed repeatedly. Great comment!
So much great stuff in this video! Great to hear some first-hand news about the N Scale Enthusiasts convention! Very much looking forward to it! The presentation from Speed was great! As someone who works in IT and has done technical support, he did a great job of trying to make it accessible to everyone. I also appreciate the mentioning of the ISO date standard (YYYY-MM-DD), and I wish more people would use that. Anyway, with regards to the project, I look forward to being able to run thru this myself at home. Thanks again!
I like so much part of the video when the train crosses from layout T-TRAK to layout N-TRAK
Great Video guys.. I see I misspoke on the screw size.. Its not #0 x 3/4 its #0 x 3/8
Thank you ! Another interesting and informative show .
We received sad news that our friend, NRail Advisor, N Scale aficionado Ray Chaffee has passed away on Friday August 25th. Ray not only was an advisor for NRail, he was a member of the Connecticut Valley Model Railroad Club and Northeast T-TRAK. Ray was a valuable contributor to the model train community and the go-to guy for trouble shooting any show layout issues. Always willing to lend a hand, Ray will be greatly missed.
interesting channel! I just jumped on board :)
Welcome aboard! We boarded your channel likewise.

There are no two better people. Their home layout "The Sceniced and Undecided" is amazing!!! The fiber optic fireworks are still my favorite. Simply brilliant! They even created my very own layout! "Brandi River Railroad" An N scale that was driven from NJ to NC for a wonderful Christmas surprise for their niece. Model railroading has been a huge part of their life; My whole life. They truly love it! Loved seeing this!!!
Shea, may we ask a favor of you? Please send an email to videos@nrail.org so we can chat with you about your recollections. Thank you!
I love the Enterprise with an F14 on the deck!! Great ship and Awesome airplane
Agreed! The “eclectic modular style” of T-TRAK layouts absolutely invites wide-spectrum creativity.
@@NRail I have a Nightmare Before Christmas module that’s always a favorite with parents who grew up in the 90’s and most kids.
Very happy to rerelease this amazing interview after correcting an error in version 1. Our earlier release misidentified the Spano’s friend, the late Tom Hoover, with another famous drag racing car legend of the same name. It should be no surprise that someone with the credentials of the Spano’s Tom Hoover would have exceptional contributions to modular N Scale too!
I was proud and pleased to have my modules included in the first layout shown in this video. I think it was one of the nicest layouts we’ve ever done at Amherst. Big thanks to NRail for posting this video, and for promoting N scale model railroading in all its modular forms. And big welcome to anyone interested in getting involved in the hobby! Please contact a local club. We are always interested in having new members and contributors. Joining a modular club is a great way to connect with other hobbyists, AND you get to run your trains in huge beautiful layouts….like this one! 😊👍👍
Thanks for your comment, gratitude and salute to club membership! We like to say to new modelers that “club membership is the perfect ‘try before you buy’ program.” Experience and relationships in the hobby can save you time & money, while making the fun ‘funner’.
This show was one of the best Amherst train show, if not the best, since many years. Nice video!
Another good job John Mark.
It was a real treat to see the Cotton Brute in action. Thanks for bringing it to our T-Trak layout.
It was a real pleasure to bring the Cotton Brute back from the dustbin and into the future!
2 cars isn't even a challenge, I doubt she even noticed that load.
Yes indeed, very poignant analysis. Chalk it up to a celebrity moment resting on her laurels. Hahaha. Amherst is just the 1st venue in 2023. Let’s see what she pulls in Reno, Grapevine, Altoona etc.
Very nice!
Thanks!
Wished you could have picked up Fay's speaking at times, but this is still neat. Fay is a great guy and modeler too.
Fay is a gem. Thanks for honoring him. As for audio, we appreciate your review. The days of using an iPhone SE mounted to a stick with no extra mic, with investment, will greatly improve. We get what we pay for, yeah?
@@NRail I met Fay in Kansas City in 2018 and saw him again in Nashville last year. Still a great video even though the sound could not be done well.
Thanks for joining us LIVE! 8 of us got the “front row view”
Great video ! Good job .
Thank you!
What do bagpipes have to do with model railroading??? FAIL!!!
Answer for the WIN!!! An NRail member who has built NTRAK and run with us for decades, brought his pipes and volunteered to upgrade our festivities. If you need a tutorial on how music facilitates celebration, you will need to consult a personality consultant. The pipes were a win on all counts.
Bob, Had you been there you would have realized why this was significant. JM did a fantastic job of stitching this all together and creating content for NRAIL Definitely NOT a fail.
Ready to take N to N-finity and beyond!
FESTIVE!
Great to see the Cotton Brute is still around and running. Many years ago Jim showed me this model at a show we were at and I was amazed by how heavy is was.
Some dedicated members expended great effort to preserve this signature piece of NTRAK memorabilia. And in 2023 it will return to the show circuit, pushing its weight around! Thanks for your feedback!
Great job with this JM!
Nice Video. I'm really sorry I missed the convention. Remember the train with the video camera?? check out this link. That video is part of the July NRail Zoom Track. ua-cam.com/video/JdaV-3rdyHk/v-deo.html If you want to see more cab rid videos check Richmond Area NRail on UA-cam.
Great video, enjoyed watching. Bob
Glad you enjoyed! We aim to please. Do you have a model railroad?
See you next month!

Is all of Zimmerman a 'no parking' zone ?
@james burba that’s a fair observation. At minute 8:20 forward, street parking is at the end of the block. So it’s plausible that local parking is reserved outside the modeled margins. It’s also a common technique to apply “selective compression”. Details that monopolize limited modeling space may be “conveniently erased or explained”.
Thanks for the feature JM! Always glad to promote N Scale.
Nice video like and subscribed from Czech Republic 🙂👍👍👍
