03 55 Chevy Stake Body Part03
03 1955 Chevy 2-Ton Stake Body Part 03
Scratch Building the bed stakes
Assembling the horribly designed body
What I'm about to say is my opinion only:
The body of this model comes in seven pieces and is a real pain to assemble.
It is a very poor design and no matter what I did I couldn't get everything to
fit well, even after dry fitting the parts. It's a good thing I was planning to make this an old beat-up farm
truck otherwise I would have already thrown it in my box of parts that
can be salvaged for other things.
I've assembled some fairly bad models from bad molds, but this one is over
the top. Atlantis...it's time to retire this kit because you have more
issues with it than just worn out molds.

      Thanks. I might have sounded frustrated...Okay, I was a-bit frustrated, but it actually is fun. I already have the seams taken care of. It was easy with some putty and because it's an old beat-up farm truck, I didn't have to be too fussy. The final video should be released soon. I'm experimenting how to show cracked glass for the windshield. Bryan, over at BG's Model Workshop has a good video of how he does it. And Sothern Scale Modeler (@SCM223) also has a good tutorial. You just can't have an old beat-up farm truck with a pristine windshield. 😀 Thanks for watching!!!

    I've been seeing "Scale Model Experiments" youtube channel using white glue to work on getting fit issues resolved. He then disassembles, cleans off the glue, and then re-assembles things again with more permanent glue. For someone starting this kit in the future, that method might really help in the build of this model, given all the gaps that are happening between body panels.

    • @skipsmessyworkbench
      @skipsmessyworkbench 12 годин тому

      Hi, yes I know about the process of using white glue for dry fitting and I also saw "Scale Model Experiments" video on using it; however, the plastic on this kit was...what I call...gummy. It is very soft. I didn't want to take the chance of doing more damage while removing the white glue. I saw the fit issues when I tape fitted the body parts. I also saw the "hpiguys" channel build this kit with similar issues but not as bad as the one I'm building; at least it wasn't as bad on camera. In my next and last video on this build you'll see that I've taken car of the gaps. I'm sure that the problem with this kit is just that the molds are very, very old. According to Scalemates they possible go back to the 1950's. Making an old farm truck with this kit will hide all the problems. If you want to build it to look like new, there will be a lot of filling. Please don't get me wrong. This is a nice kit. I've always liked Atlantis kits. It's just that, in my opinion, it's time for them to refresh their molds. I actually would love to see them or someone release this in 1:24/1:25 scale. Thanks for watching and commenting.

My '72 Opel Manta Rally was Flame Red because I couldn't get it in Black. Oh how I loved the Opel. Best car I ever owned. I wish Opel would still import them. I use Gimp on Windows and Linux Zorin. The grass here in the Keystone state is growing like weeds. The old time farmers used to say they could sit outside in evening and hear the corn growing. Well, I can sit on my patio and hear the grass growing. 😂🤣I guess I need to be thankful I can still push a lawn mower and remain active in all ways. I'm leaning toward either Colonial White over Peacock Blue or Raven Black over Fiesta Red. I've actually been spending the bulk of my time on the Lost In Space B9 Robot. I'm having a blast with that kit and developing the electronics to animate as much of it as possible. Thanks for watching.

    Peacock Blue/ White would be my choice, although Thunderbird Green single tone or in 2-tone with White would look good, too. Looking ahead, if I had this kit, I'd deepen the panel lines rather than use Panel Liner.

    • @skipsmessyworkbench
      @skipsmessyworkbench 3 місяці тому

      I plan to deepen the panel lines and have started around where the headlight rings meet the fenders. The lines out of box are very shallow. Thanks for watching and commenting. Thanks for the input on the color. I'm going to do some test spoons and see how they look.

    I would suggest just painting the rim of the steering wheel (and the column supports where necessary) rather than stripping all the chrome off. The 1:1 steering wheel and column has a lot of chrome. If your interest is the convertible, AMT's '57 T-Bird kit has the soft-top for top-up and a boot for top-down display.

    • @skipsmessyworkbench
      @skipsmessyworkbench 4 місяці тому

      Thanks. I'll consider that; however, acrylic water based paint does not adhere well to a chromed surface, so I have to give that some thought. Thanks for the tip on the rag top. I didn't know the '57 kit from AMT offered the rag top.

      It could be that I'm anal 😂🤣. But really, there isn't a lot of room and I want to try doing the whole animation with Arduino's. I say Arduino's because the MP3 player seems to use a lot of Arduino resources so at this time I'm planning on the sound having it's own Arduino. Thanks for watching. Updates will be coming soon.

    I have this kit in my stash, but haven't built it. I too love the 1955 through 1957, hate the 1958 through 1960, then love the 1961 through 1966 Birds. Then they botched it again. I have mixed views on the later "Retrobird". 😊

    If it's a body that's only available in diecast, and sometimes that happens, I wouldn't be against buying and building a diecast like this. Really you should be more proud of this, Skip. It really looks good. I'm sure if you took just a bit more time, you'd work out the fit and paint issues like the hood, and be greatly satisfied with the diecast, even to the point you'd try another. I would display that if I'd built it, definitely. The old 1:1 Model A's have some paint and fit issues, don't they? 😃

      Thanks for the encouragement. I am happy with it, but I really don't like working with die cast. I do have another one just like this. I bought two at the time. One box was marked 1928 Model 'A' and the other 1931 Model 'A'; however, in the box they are identical kits, so maybe down the road I'll build the other one. I also have a 1:16 scale 1931 Model 'A' made by Minicraft. I wanted to build them because I had helped my neighbor restore a 1929 Model 'A'. I had such a good time doing that restoration, although his was all black. I guess that's why I always love those years of Model 'A's. His niece still has the car in the garage and I've been after her to sell it to me, but she won't budge. Thanks again my friend.

    Looks pretty good. 😊 I've only built one model car kit with a diecast body, back in the late 1970s in my Airforce enlistment. It was an MGTC, about 1/20 scale I think. Haven't had a hankering to do another, though I have bought a few 1/18 and 1/24 diecast cars.
