Cleve Cole to Big River to Cairn Creek Hut 2024
This tramp was done on Australia Day Long Weekend 2024. I decided to complete a very unusual circuit for a hike from Cleve Cole Hut and down to Big River and back up Quartz Ridge to Mt Bogong and back to CCH. Unfortunately, the section walking in the river the camera had to be stowed in the backpack, so it was limited filming as I went up the river.

Mt Anne Summit Tasmania : The tricky bit.......
Переглядів 2,9 тис.11 місяців тому
Initial part of video was when I got to the top of Mt Anne in 2022. Perfect day for it. Jump ahead to Feb 2023 and I was happy to watch whoever made it up to make this video to upload. The section where I consider is the worst is it 4:10 as its fairly vertical. The 2 guys (from Queensland I think) made it look soooo easy! I met them later near the turnoff to Shelf camp. If anyone knows who they...

No key words as to where this is so harder to find! The photo at the end is of the old water level stick they must have had in place.

Finally after 3 years of trying to get here! Stopped because of fires....stopped because of floods...almost stopped because of COVID 19!! The trek into Lake Rhona (now named Lake Corona) happened just after a huge dump of rain several days earlier. Getting there can be like driving through a maze....I have the GPX track (in how to get there from Gordon River Rd to the carpark) if anyone wants i...

In late Jan 2021, I finally got to do this hike that has been buzzing in my head for years now. Overall there IS a track but would HATE to do it in winter! This is more an informative vid of what to expect. If you want the GPX file of this track, I can send it, also I can send a write up in detail of a few "Lost" sections that happened to me! PM me. 7/3/23 LATE UPDATE!! THANKS TO HEATHER AND RO...

Murray River Source and Border Cairn Victoria
great video. Now on my list of places to vist!
Good vid. A little harsh on DOC?
That “dodgy” bit brought back memories of doing it covered in ice. You just didn’t know if your feet were going to fly out and go sailing into space! Fortunately they didn’t,
Love the video. I’ve climbed Anne twice this route (in the 1980s and 90s) and once from the northeast ridge (Sandfly Creek route), which is a similar scramble but no more tricky. Great memories!
Hey Marty, loved the video, I recently visited cairn creek hut and read your story in the book, no one else had visited since myself one day ago, your journey has inspired me to one day (in summertime) complete something similar.
Glad to know that it motivates you to do the same! Check out the likes of Lucas chamberlain and rob Parsons (both from Tasmania) on UA-cam...they inspired me to do The Never Never and likes of this !
Cheers Marty, that's brilliant. Tassie never disappoints. Crazy lazy leg, bit beyond me these days I reckon. Good luck mate, look forward to checking your other adventures out, subbed ✌🏻
If you are in Victoria @outandabout_oz I just did around Mt Bogong (highest peak in VIC) over Aus Day Long Weekend ...That was the easy part...but part of my tramp went from Cleve Cole hut and down to Big River (its part of the A.A.W.T)...now normally you head up the other side to Roper Hut...but I decided to try to get to Cairn Creek hut (Google map : Cairn Creek SEC Hut) via Big River itself! There IS NO TRACK!!! Stay tuned!
very cool, I am in Canberra and usually hover around the north end of the AAWT. Did Bogong years ago, should get it back on the radar. Lots to like about the Vic high country. Look forward to your adventure ✌🏻 @@martyfelber6102
@@outandabout_oz I have posted it( Mt bogong)
Great info 👍
to anyone interested - don't take the extreme left route over the exposed ledge (the old route). it can be very dangerous, particularly when icy or even wet. I find the best way (easiest and safest) is straight ahead, up the guts of the steep gully. It looks tricky but isn't too bad.
Is that the way the guys were taking before they turned down and went left?
@@martyfelber6102the best way up ? yep
I remember the old route when I went up in about 1990, and going up that crack on the left did *not* feel as easy as they made it look.
Good on you guys. Well worth the effort. The boulderfield approaching from Eliza is a challenge in ice as well. Did this climb solo in 1984.😊
Fantastic nature!
Hi great vid..heading up there in two weeks, did you see any Tahr on your trip? Cheers
Thanks for uploading this. I am not sure I can follow your directions ..turning right and left isn’t as clear as turning east, south east etc. but with the coordinates it should be relatively easy… thanks again.
so.......did you get there??
great vid thank you !!
What's the road like into the carpark these days? Need a 4wd?
I am pretty sure its good for a 2 wheel drive but a decent car required, not a buzzbox!
Sorry but I would not refer to the disc plough at Gordonvale as " rubbish." It was part of Ernie Bonds life and History of the Rasselas Valley. Great Video makes for good armchair viewing by this 80 year old HWC retiree.😁
Did you get a salmon up the cliff face ?
Ha!!! I still picture the bastards as they were coming up the cliff face. Yes, I hooked them! but as I wound in , the fish were then getting dragged up the razor sharp rocks cliff face. i would lose them when they were about quarter way up the cliff!!
@@martyfelber6102 I enjoyed the tour with you. Thanks.
@@R00RAL With what primitive map i had back then its amazing I got there...so many misleading tracks I could have gone down ......but now with the likes of GAIA app on a mobile, it makes navigation soo much easier!
@@martyfelber6102 i liked your attitude actually, just going because you can, not knowing where your really headed. Makes it real.
Feb 6th damn that shot up so high on that graph that's so mad Lucky man .... Awesome days for it ! Chose it awesome
Haha seen you on my subscribers channel flick it....you finally made it haha nice
Yep....but it was the advice about the hydro info that helped a lot to convince me to go.....as you know the "carpark" is a loooooong way from anywhere, so once you drive there, you are committed to go....let alone the 40 minute walk to find the REAL truth of what the water levels are REALLY like!!!! But one day made the difference as you saw in the log notes!!!! Once agian ..THANK YOU! Marty
@@martyfelber6102 that hydro measure chart is handy done well and noting it for viewers on the way in🍺👍
What an interesting walk. Keep your eyes open in this area. It is a possible Dragonfly hot-spot. Keep looking lol AFB
nice vid mate, i had the same head wind goin in from ramhill... holy hecka it was difficult! i feel ya. Awesome country none the less!!
Curious now.....wheres ramhill? send me co ords please
Are those coordinates correct? They mark a valley on hermit hill above Tom groggin
which co ords? write them down or at what time stamp?
The ones in the end credits. They seem to work on google maps, some of my gps’s put the locations elsewhere. So they are both on the south side of the border on Forrest hill?
@@bradmullaerialphotography yes...do you use GAIA?
@@bradmullaerialphotography they were also off my old Garmin GPS....VERY primitave compared to using GAIA on my iphone. I absolutely swear by this app!
Marty Felber yep I use it also and the Vic emergency app.
You just took the notebook and kept it for 2 years? Why didn’t you go in from the eastern side? It’s only a 5km walk
Where were you when I needed you!! I tried via facebook "hiking" groups and other means and explained what I had. BUT NO ONE REPLIED!!! Also living in Melbourne with family commitments, I RARELY can get back back up there, not even on a weekend! What section is the 5 kms part. Where can you drive to? 4WD I take it
Hey Brad ...Still trying to figure out from what track I can be 5 kms away...I assume you come off the Limestone Rd?
@@martyfelber6102 did you come in limestone tk then hike along cowombat to to the flats? It looks like a 20km hike. I was going to keep going along limestone to cobberas tk then walk in Macfarlane tk to forest hill.
@@bradmullaerialphotography but how bad is the track AND is there a "winter gate" somewhere along the way (like there is for Cowombat track)
Marty Felber oh I haven’t been I was asking you for advice as I want to head up there soon. There’s a locked gate on macfarlane Tk because it’s for forestry vehicles only. But it’s only a 5km walk in where the Cowambat Tk looks much longer
in which country is this????
New zealand
Awesome video Marty. Thanks, much appreciated.
Great video mate, did you post the gps co-ordinates somewhere for both points
which both points? which one are you after? Have you heard of GPS app GAIA ?? its free and its THE BEES KNEES!!
MURRAY RIVER SOURCE POST AND BORDER CAIRN GPS CO-ORDS ARE NEAR THE VERY END!! YOU HAVE TO WATCH ALL THE WAY TILL THE END
Super pretty waterfall!
Yes it is...but you have some pretty awesome stuff where you are !!
Yeah that's a pretty big one, you can see why the trees are wiped out in many vallies from the hundreds of years of this abuse. Nice that you captured it.
There was many years ago (and probably still there) a heap of trees that were "flattened" in just one area (this is up North temple track)...we always wondered HOW they flattened and we thought "Nah...it cant be from that mountain top (that was VERY far away) ...but after witnessing the aftermath of this video....yes, I believe it was !
Wow thanks Marty. I have started to plan a trip there in November. Can I ask which way you went in to Cowombat flat? Via Benambra or via another route?
www.google.com.au/maps/dir/-36.8776944,148.08333/-36.7959897,148.1681551/@-36.8521317,148.0811709,14281m/data=!3m1!1e3!4m2!4m1!3e0
From the Limestone rd I went from there along Cowombat Flat Track. Do you have GAIA......THE best free app you EVER need!!!
So...did you end up going at some stage?
What do you mean it should not be there? Avalanches have been coming off Boanerges down that gully for a long time.
I have been up this valley many times since 2003 and its the first time I saw it down to the point it crossed the river!
@@martyfelber6102 It's a common avalanche path. Mid winter it pays not to linger there. In the early 90's there was a massive one came down and the blast blew trees over on the other side of the river. That would have been something to see.
Marty for Victorian waters that’s a great catch!
What are you doing at 2:00am watching Fish Porn?!?!
Marty Felber was scoping out a campsite near a fishy stream for the weekend.
Hahahaha just found your channel by accident.

@@martyfelber6102 haha awesome! it was a great week
Thanks for making the video Marty. What a great record and yes, we do want to get there. Walking up the stream beds and not on the DOC tracks!
You are welcome...I just did a tramp to the highest peak in Victoria.....rounded hills compared to NZ!!!
Great video Marty and record of the avalanche. Nice to meet you in Memorial Hut where you had the inside so warm and tidy. Tim and Ailsa.
Tim Trengrove. Thanks!! I will send u video of up at Brodrick Hut when I get time🥃😁maybe when I get back to home
Gday Tim...back home now....I had an absolute FANTASTIC time in NZ! I will get around to upload the Brodrick Hut section of the tramp....I went up the river bed as before and I STUPIDLY made the mistake to follow the DOC trail (about 45 minutes before the hut)….and yes, I got to a marker and then the track disappeared without seeing the next marker....so back down to the river!!!
@@martyfelber6102 looking forward to seeing the video. Sorry you too experienced the DOC (bad) sense of humour track markers to nowhere.

cool videos marty. i subscribed, would you mind doing the same for me? :)
If you were in NZ mate, you'd be obliged . . . no, mandated, to return the fish as it was 'foul hooked'. There is a fine levied if caught with a 'foul hooked' fish. On that count, I guess it doesn't count. Bugger!!!!
Bill Saltbush is he fishing a abt comp is he ? Who cares. A fish is a fish really. Maybe if it was a comp different story :)
