Hiking the Thames Path 🇬🇧 (295 km) and Graduating in Oxford
I walked the length of the Thames Path and stopped in Oxford to attend a graduation... 😉 The Thames Path is a National Trail that runs along the banks of the eponymous river from its source near Kemble in Gloucestershire to the Thames Barrier in London over around 180 miles/294 kilometres (officially).
My stats for this trip:
- 319 kilometres
- 967 metres of elevation gain
- 10 days of walking
- vast quantities of pub grub.

Hiking Thru Holland (3/5): Pieterpad
The Pieterpad was a trail I'd been looking forward to for a while before starting it, because I was expecting there to be more hikers, as it's probably the most popular long walk in the Netherlands. The Pieterpad spans about 500 km from Pieterburen to the Sint-Pietersberg (Mount Saint Peter) close to Maastricht. I walked the Pieterpad as part of a bigger adventure: I went for a long walk (a "th...

Great video! Beautiful shots of nature, great editing and a hilarious sense of humor 😅🙏🏼
You slept in my bed at Tossals Verds, well not really mine!!. We also stayed at Sa Fit backpackers in Esporles, I love the Mallorquin street life and food - empanadas, enasaimadas, pa amb oil and coca de verdura ! But we did the whole hike in 9 days, starting in refuges, and wild camping..... But then I am 67!!........... What a beautiful refugi Tossals is eh? You will see the Alaró Gap between the two flat top mountains very clearly from the front terrace. My mum live there for 11 years.... and would hike the mountains with a local international walking group of golden oldies too!! Her ashes are scattered near Alaró.
Congratulations, Yoah! Great video and very good editing quality. By the way: the fruit that you are eating is a madroño (Arbutus unedo). In Madrid it used to be sold in greengrocers'shops and they used to make a liquor with it. Two questions: what camera have you used for this video? And what editing program? Thank you very much.
This video is a work of art. Congratulations
Loved your video! So well done. I’m planning on doing the Pieterpad (coming from Canada) in the fall and this sealed the deal. So few good videos of this trail. If you know of an English version of a guidebook or any other advice, please let me know if you have a chance. I also did the Thames Path a couple of years ago. Wondering how it compares. Thanks! Now a subscriber 😊
That crack of your icecream 😅 Good editing 😀
Ik w8 op een nieuw filmpje van je
Wow what an inspiring video and such cool editing style. 🤩 I am gonna hike at least part of it in a couple of weeks. Sleeping in the beach looks amazing. Thank you!
Wanneer ga je weer is wandelen?
Nice hike, nice video, thank you for sharing!
Great video looking at hiking this on April looks fantastic.I.like the look of your trail shoes what make are they as they look to have a nice wide toe box and I like my Altra lone peaks atb daz
Thanks so much, Daz! The shoes are Altras: the Olympus model. I love the wide toe box as well and these just have more cushioning than the Lone Peaks.
Hello, thanks for hiking were I live❤
And also a very nice channel, I hope that you get more views
@@Soyguaygod Thank you! I imagine Mallorca is a wonderful place to live - I certainly enjoyed the 2-3 weeks I spent there and would love to go back some day!
Cool video! The script and the images were amazing. Did you book the refugees before or you can just book them while you're at it?
Thanks, Marco! I booked the refuge on the go (the day before, or on the day) but I wasn't always able to book a place, so I'd actually recommend booking ahead if you have a decent idea about when you're going to want to stay in each refuge. Hope that helps and have fun out there!
Hey Yoah, in which month did you hike the GR221 (sorry if I missed it in the video)?
Hey! This was in early October 🙂
@@yoahvangelder Thank you so much.
I'm so glad I stumbled upon your video. I'm planning to do the hike in 2 months and I'm in the process of getting as much information as possible. Usually, I watch loads of videos for the info, not really enjoying them, but yours was really nice and thoughtful. So much that I just wrote my first comment ever :D keep up the great work!
Aw, thank you so much! Your lovely comment totally made my day! I hope you have the best time in Mallorca!
Een patatje speciaal. LOL
Dankje!! Heel veel plezier en succes!
I want to go in mid October as well, were there enough shops open to buy food regularly? And how were the bugs for camping?
I didn't have any issues with bugs when I did this. Some of the resorts I came through felt pretty deserted in the off-season, but I still found plenty of shops - at least one on most days, and there are beach bars and other things of that nature. Not a tonne of them along the entire trail though! If you're doing shorter days (and on the northern half of the island), it's definitely worth carrying food (and water) with you to make sure you have enough. I used maps (Google, Mapy.cz) to plan where to get food and drink. I hope that helps!
Leuk kanaal joh.
Question did you use air b &b for your accommodations? Still amazed by your editing
Thanks for your lovely compliment, Eric! I used www.vriendenopdefiets.nl/en for accommodations - you stay in people's homes (spare rooms, etc.), it's very reasonably priced (especially for Holland) and often a great experience! You can organise places to stay via phone calls or by email. Note that doing this in advance will greatly improve your chances of finding (conveniently located) accommodation. Highly recommended!
@Yoah van Gelder Thanks for the link. Will definitely use it on my hike 😊 Couple cousins already said they will join me for a couple days. Life is 👍
Really nice job the editing and showing the trail. Hunting for a trail to do in Holland for next year. Your video helped. Now just need to see if I can get my Dutch cousins to join me for a couple days
Another excellent video. Thoroughly enjoying your adventures except the 'incident'.
From the Netherlands last night to Mallorca tonight - vicariously enjoyed your next adventure! G'day from Australia!
Hi from Australia! Really enjoying your videos. We're interested in what gear you're carrying. You seem to travel lightly. Are you still sleeping on the z-pad you had on your pack in episode 1?
Hi Alistair! It's so cool to hear that a) people are still watching the videos I posted over a year ago (from Australia!) and b) that you're enjoying them - makes me very happy. 🙂 To answer your question: I am still carrying the z-pad from the previous videos, but started packing it inside my bag at this point, for a few reasons: - acts as a back-panel for the otherwise frameless backpack I used on this trip (not super important with thoughtful packing (and a light load), but still) - better packability: easier to reach items inside my pack and since I wasn't sleeping on it much anymore I could leave the pad in the pack most nights - aerodynamics 😎😉 All the best from Antalya, Turkey!
@@yoahvangelder Thanks for responding. Do you find the z-pad comfy? Just noticed your gear videos. Very helpful. Thoroughly enjoyed your videos. Nice music. Playlist?! Inspired to walk around The Netherlands!
'Comfortable' isn't the right word, exactly - 'doable' is a better descriptor for the z-pad, which definitely took some getting used to! I don't have a playlist for the music (and wonder what would be.a good platform - Spotify?) but appreciate the compliment! Thanks again for all your kind words!
@@yoahvangelder Appreciate your insights. Many thanks!
Mooie edit. Dankjewel :)
Thanks! I plan n doing some type of long distance walk in the Netherlands next fall and this was more than encouraging! Beautiful country.
What is your experience with the Magic 100 Cumulus Ul bag?
Loved it for summer: it's basically the simplest, lightest bag (it's more of a hybrid/mixture of a sleeping bag and a quilt) I could find and works a treat. Benefits include no hood (you can cinch it around your neck), full zip (you can use it like a quilt/blanket), and light weight (high fill power). The foot box also has a great shape. Worked well for me in terms of length, too (I'm 1.85 m and it's a perfect fit). Highly recommended.
Great adventure. Did you use an app to navigate? How do you know the route?
I use the mapy.cz app for most of my hiking.
@@yoahvangelder Thanks
Dus ben erg benieuwd waarom jij lage hebt. Verder fantastisch beelden in al Je YT filmpjes
Hi Jacqueline! :-)
Can I ask what kind of shoes are you wearing?
Amazing footage and editing! Well done! I did this hike in summer 2021 as a challenge and it was definitely one of the harder things I've done. I only did wild camping and at over 30 degrees, you need to carry an insane amount of water with you. Finding shade was also nearly impossible in a lot of areas. Ironically though, I almost froze to death because there was a freak thunder storm at night while up on a mountain and my tarp didn't hold. If anyone is planning to do this hike in summer time, just don't.
👍🏼✌️
Do you happen to have the route you took? Maybe the GPX? Many thanks
Hi Ashley, I have everything recorded on Strava so could download the GPX files and share them with you (let me know how, and I will). Do note that I did get lost once or twice and I wouldn't recommend anyone follow the exact route I took because of this. Here are the links to the five days on Strava, if that helps: Day 1 - www.strava.com/activities/6073167447 Day 2 - www.strava.com/activities/6073167702 Day 3 - www.strava.com/activities/6078414738 Day 4 - www.strava.com/activities/6082499293 Day 5 - www.strava.com/activities/6090444778
I love your shorts! What brand are they? Do you have an affiliate link?
Thanks, Karl! That's really kind. The shorts are a pair of heavily discounted (covid era) swim shorts from John Lewis, so no link I'm afraid 🙂. In hindsight I could have probably gone for something/lighter stretchier but, equally, whatever you already own will probably work.
Great vids, planning to do GR221 in Jan. Sorry about the nose. You seemed to cope well!
NGL: it was tough!
I can see you are very ultra-light, but me with my over 8 kg base weight and always wearing medium hiking boots for a mountain hike, judging from the rocky terrain, should rather forget about the low walking shoes I use for lowlands hiking?
It is a question Yoah.
You winsum and you lose some 🤣🤣🤣
Hello, You have done it during the autumn, spring o summer? What month is this? I thinking about doing it now... but I'm affraid about the temperatures at the night, I'm going to sleep in the tent. :D
Hi! This was in the beginning of October, so I imagine now would be a good time as well. Just check to make sure the refuges are (still) open and aim for a good weather window.
@@yoahvangelder Thank you!
